Trailing slash 301 redirect code
-
Hi,
I have code for redirecting trailing slash to non-trailing slash, which works fine:
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^.yourdomain.co.uk$ [NC]RewriteRule ^(.+)/$ http://%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L]
(got code from http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2010/04/to-slash-or-not-to-slash.html)
But I cant find a code for redirecting to the trailing slash version anywhere, and I cant modify the above code myself.
Can someone help resolve this issue please, or point me to a resource.
Thanks very much
James

Hi Keri,
Thanks for the suggested solution. The enarion solution works for my regular URL's but then causes me issues with some of the more complicated javascript/ajax functionality on the site. No idea why, (bit over my head to be honest) but my developer suggested that it wasnt a good idea to it anyway (again ,for reasons I dont fully understand!)

I use Wordpress and Thesis and have them do all the work for me, so I'm not a hands-on expert and can't verify the accuracy of the following URLs, but it looks like they may address your questions. Let us know if one of these works for you.
http://enarion.net/web/htaccess/trailing-slash/
http://soulpass.com/2008/01/11/htaccess-add-trailing-slash-to-url/ (be sure to read whole post)

no, google can (and often does) index both pages as separate URL's

Hi Rene,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. It's this one "/".
I'm not in favour of using the canonical tag as it's not a directive, so I want ideally a 301 redirect code for it
thanks

the reson is: Back in the day (I do not know if it still does this, havent tested it or had cause to do so.) google indexed example.com/page/ and example.com/page as two different pages.
The quick fix is to make a RegEx that "tests for the excistense of a trailing slash at the end ofg the url" and then use that in your .htaccess to redirect all urls without to an url with. In other words add a trailing slash. (makes sence I hope.)
You could do the same thing with rel=canonical (even easier imo. since you can use php and do it in the relevant templates)
Here is Matts word on trailing slashes: http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/seo-advice-url-canonicalization/#comment-8260

Then why it is suggested to have one version - with or without trailing slash ?
-
In my experience no
-
If a URL has trailing slash ( / ), and a user types the URL without trailing slash, would an 404 error will be shown ?
-
I could probably be of service but since I'm Danish You'll have to give me an example of a "trailing" slash.. A guess it's a slash that tips the left? eg: "" or is it this one: "/"
if you help me understand what you mean I might be able to help you

Is 301 redirects a deal breaker for Migrating content or moving to new software?
I have this forum with about 2 million posts for 16 years on root of the domain. I am looking to switch softwares but the top ones won’t help setup 301 redirects. But I can still migrate all my members and all my content (threads/posts), would Google still reindex all our content or if we don’t setup redirects would it really kill our entire traffic for a long time or maybe just a month or so? I really want to migrate to software that isn’t forum based but rather something that offers courses, chat, live video streaming, subscription based etc. and this is the only way to do so OR to set it up on an entirely new domain OR subdomain but to me that is like starting all over from scratch? I could archive the forum to read only and set it up on subdomain or another root domain - then on the archived forum setup banners and a pop up linking to the new site or new subdomain? . This is such a hard decision for us as the current forum we have had for so many years has lost members posting from 1k a day to just a handful a day, our fb group though gets 1k a day so I’m trying to revive a site into something more modern and has all the training features we can offer as well.

How to 301 trailing URLs to new domain home page - wildcard?
How would I add a redirect rule so all old domain URLs redirect to a new domain? All the old pages no longer exist on a new website. The domains have been through several CMS platforms, so it would be unnecessary to recreate them. Problem is, they're indexed in search engines from the past 10 years, so it's causing a lot of 404s. Example: search "NARI Tampa Bay" and you'll find 2 old domains: nari-tampabay.com & nari-tampabay.org. The new domain is naritb.org Those 2 old domains are now pointed to the same nameservers as the new and listed as parked domains. Here's the current rules in htaccess: <code>RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^nari-tampabay.org [NC,OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.nari-tampabay.org [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://www.naritb.org/$1 [L,R=301] RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^nari-tampabay.com [NC,OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.nari-tampabay.com [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://www.naritb.org/$1 [L,R=301]</code>

Soft 404's on a 301 Redirect...Why?
So we launched a site about a month ago. Our old site had an extensive library of health content that went away with the relaunch. We redirected this entire section of the site to the new education materials, but we've yet to see this reflected in the index or in GWT. In fact, we're getting close to 500 soft 404's in GWT. Our development team confirmed for me that the 301 redirect is configured correctly. Is it just a waiting game at this point or is there something I might be missing? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

301 redirect with Magento; still Page authority 0 after 6 weeks
Hi Mozzers! In December '14 I have execute a 301 redirect in the 'old' page in the admin of my Magento store. Now I was surprised to see that the Page Authority is still 0 of the new page 6 weeks after the execution. should I have seen the update of the PA on the new page already after 6 weeks of time? If yes, then I assume that my Magento didn't execute this properly? Old url: http://hippemamashop.nl/mama/boeken/fotoalbum.html

260k 301 redirects
Hello, I just found that some of the urls on my site have both ugly characters and some other things I'd like to fix (such as ---- into a single - ) After some local tests i've seen that If i leave some imperfections there will be 48k different urls on the other hand if the renaming procedure is strict i'll have around 260k out of 2.3M urls to be renamed. If I'm going to do this I'll create new canonicals meta tag and redirect old urls with 301 headers to the new location. The content will not change. My big doubt is SEO wise, I know that I'll have better urls, but aren't those too much redirects on a single day? what would you do if you wish to have shipshape urls and know some of these are crap? thanks

301 Redirects - SEO Benefit?
Hello, Years ago, our company started out as a Yahoo store. We've since moved onto another website with its own shopping cart but since the Yahoo store is almost 10 years old, there's a lot of history there and it still exists with the occasional order. We currently use it for reputation management purposes with links to our real ecommerce site but we're thinking of just redirecting the Yahoo store to our ecommerce site. Is there any SEO benefit in doing this? We were also kind of penalized by Panda. Would this help us out at all (the descriptions on both sites could be considered duplicate content).

301 Redirect NOT Working as Expected - HELP!
Hi! I just launched our newly coded site and just realized the installed 301 is NOT working. The URL string is the same EXCEPT for the removal of /shop/. Here is the code in .htaccess: ############################################ enable rewrites Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine on #RedirectMatch 301 ^/shop?/$ http://hiphound.com/ RedirectMatch 301 ^/shop?/$ http://hiphound.com ########################################### When I go to Google and click on an old link I get a 404. No bueno!! Here is an example: http://hiphound.com/shop/rubit-dog-tag-clip I thought (and was told) that the installed 301 would send this page to: http://hiphound.com/rubit-dog-tag-clip It's not. Please HELP!! 🙂 What am I doing wrong??? Lynn
