Dashes / Slashes / Full Spots in Meta Tile.
-
Hello,
I have a question how about how google sees dashes, slashes, full stops etc. I am new to SEO so this might be dumb.
I sell refurbished printer parts. The majority of people search for the part number in google.
A typical part number might be "04.F5/S3A YA50" . A customer might search for "04F5S3A YA50" or "04.F5/S3AYA50" or "04.F5/S3A YA50" or "04.F5/S3A-YA50". They aren't radically different but seem to effect the rankings.
At the moment I use the following stucture for the meta tiles, descriptions etc
04.T5/S3A YA50 (04T5S3AYA50) by OEM | mysite
Buy refurbished OEM 04.T5/S3A YA50 (04T5S3AYA50). Free next day delivery. 12 month warrnanty on all parts.
www.mysite/4F5S3AYA50
Part number (Part number no spaces) by OEM | Mysite
Generic text Part number (Part number no spaces) text
www.mysite/(Part number no spaces
My questions, should I try to include all the different ways a customer might search for a part number in my meta title, description, url etc. Or should I try to include within the content of the page.
Many thanks

Thanks for the link Gary.
I watched the video on misspellings;

I think this would be a good way to capture variants of the part number search

http://www.googleguide.com/advanced_operators_reference.html
Have a look at the reference, it shows that what I was saying about the "-" is true, although whether it is always honoured is another question!
It also suggests about arithmitic operators (-,+,/,*), as these could all be part of your part number,a nd your part number could sometimes look like an equation, google may try to "solve" the equation. Ig uess the way to get around that would be to put your query in speach marks, but you can;t train your user base to do that!
Out of vuriosity, what pro video do you find your answer in. I wouldn't mind taking a look myself.

thanks Joel . Gary.
Gary, I always believed "-" was treat the same as " " or "" i.e. Monkey-Butler would be treated the same as "Monkey Butler" or "MonkeyButler" or "Monkey" & "Butler". But after reading your response I am now not so sure. Your answer seems logical. Anyone know the answer?
I actually found a decent answer to my intial question in the Pro Video section about misspellings

My personal thought is that you're doing the right thing as you are. You could possibly have an area on your page that lists possible varients of the part number in a box titled "Also known as" or something similar to increase user experience. I'm nto sure it will have a huge amount of SEo benefit though.
Whilst nto an expert on Google query syntax, I'm pretty sure things like full stops, slashes are more or less ignored. dashes are used by google to remove a part of a qury (e.g. "cars -audi" - find sites with the keyword cars but not the keyword audi) so maybe that is why you're experiencing sme differences in the SERPs when searching for the same part number with different combinations of slashes, dashes and stops.

Ecommerce Traffic increase - moving from 500 to 1000 words/category
Hello, We have found traffic to increase upon adding content to category descriptions. Our category pages are stronger than our product pages. Our main categories (the fourty that are in the navigation) have 500 words on them, carefully written helpful content. We are trying to decide whether to increase (for these 40 categories) to 1000 words per category. Do you think this would increase traffic ? Is it a good idea? Thanks!

Health/Exercise/Fitness bloggers?
Hey Mozzers, I have a lot of blogs that deal with health/exercise/fitness and that niche and need to get content for them. I'm not looking for mass content that is crap. I'm looking for well thought out stuff. Any bloggers in that industry want to be guest authors and put up some posts on any of my sites? Trying to get good content and this seems like a good way. You can include a link back to you obviously. Please let me know if you are interested, I'm happy to get in touch and post your content on my sites. Thanks!

Mobile Sites / Useragent detection
I've got a question about how search engines declare that they're mobile browsers... Our website is based on wordpress, and uses the caching plugin W3TC to send a different site template to mobile useragents - i believe from the HTTP useragent string; (the same content is served on every page whether it's a desktop or mobile - just different themes). After having this mobile site online for a few months, we're a little confused as to why google still shows the instant preview of the desktop version for mobile users, and it doesn't show the little mobile phone icon in our SERPs for mobile devices (it's as if it doesn't realise the mobile site exists). I was reading today that the "old" method of serving different content based on the browser is to use the HTTP useragent string; and there's a "new" object checking method which is more robust (although I can't find a lot of information about it). Can anyone explain the "new" method? Would this be the reason that google is so far ignorant of our mobile site?

Multisite Worpress Environment / Community
Hello fellow SEOMOZ rs. We are building out a platform on WordPress that provides a free blog for a market niche in a multi-site WordPress environment. The client we are building this solution for now wants the people signing up for the free blogs to be able to search for each other (based on categories and keywords), to build a list of favorites from other bloggers in this community (sort of like building a team), review each other (leaving a publicly viewable review and score of each other) as well as create a forum that is outside the blogs that each of them have. Here is a summary of the goals for the WordPress Plug in (s) 1. Search for other sites within the multi-site environment
Content Development | | webindustry
2. Scoring / Review system for other users (who also have blogs on the system)
3. Ability to build and maintain a list of other users in the community (like a prefered list or team list)
4. A shared Forum area that we could admin from the multi-site platform that they could log in with using the same credentials as their multi-site blog credentials. My question for you all is: Does anyone have experience in a single plugin that will work in a multisite environment that would handle some or most of the goals listed? If not a single plugin, how about recommendations for individual plug ins that might help with this? Thanks for any recommendations!1 -
