Effective keyword grouping - any suggestions?
-
I have a specific question regarding keyword grouping. Whenever I've have compiled a (long) list of keywords, I create smaller groups of keywords that can be targeted by a category or page. However, I find this to be quite labour-intensive as I'm doing this work manually through filtering in Excel.
To illustrate what I mean, here's an example of a keyword list:
baby shirt
t-shirt for baby
pregnancy shirts
pregnancy giftsNormally I would create a list of root words, like this:
baby
shirt
pregnancy
giftI would then manually filter the list on each root word and copy the filtered list to separate tabs, which would result in lists like this:
baby
baby shirt
t-shirt for babyshirt
baby shirt
t-shirt for baby
pregnancy shirtsetc.
As you can imagine, this is a lot of work. So my hope is that you can help me out with a smart tool / Excel formula / ??? to automate this process.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Your product category pages should only focus on 1 or 2 keywords. If you come out with a lot of keywords on one page, it may look like you are keyword stuffing. The only way to tell which are going to be your best keywords is by hooking up Google Analytics and setting up conversion goals. This will tell you he value of the keyword. If you are using Google adwords, it'll tell you if a particular keyword is making or losing you money.
I always break things down into categories.
Mens shirt, Womens shirt, Baby Shirt, Dog shirt. You won't run into so much duplication like you would with the two categories you are talking about (baby & shirt). Use the Control F in Excel to find and replace duplicate keywords.

Hi Francisco,
Actually I'm only using this for SEO solely, and the purpose is to easily spot the most valuable keyword (in terms of search volume, competition, conversion rates etc.) as well as have some synonyms and related words grouped together to vary product copy.

Are you using this for Google Adwords. Because if you are, I see a BIG problem with that strategy. Basically you will be competing with you own self for the keyword Baby Shirt & t-shirt for baby. Most likely you will have them in different campaigns or adgroups and all google is going to do is show the one with a higher bid.

How do you keep track of the keywords you're working on ?
Hello Moz community, Let's suppose you're working on a +600 pages website and you are working on lots of keywords. I'd like to know if you had a database / excel / tool to know which keywords you've been targetting so that you don't create twice the same content ? Thanks for your answers

Decide which keyword to check
Hi. I made 3 different keywordlists. based on the following rules: list 1: top 50 of best ranking keywords of this campaign list 2: Top 50 keywords with highest volume in adwords and related to the website list 3: Top 50 last month used keywords by our clients from GWT Now i want to make one top 50 list keywords i want to track and optimize the landingpages for it. What is the best way to choose from these three lists. There are a lot of overlaps (especialy in list 1 and 3.) so those keywords have preference. But how about keywords with high volume and high difficulty, related to the website, and low ranking? i leave the conversion out of it for now, first goal is to get much traffic as possible.

Keywords for homepage and product categories
My homepage explains the different electrical equipment our company sells, our main product category page also does the same but in more detail. I'm stuck where I feel the homepage and product category page need to be optimised for the same keyword except the homepage needs to be optimised for our company name too. Was anyone else in the same situation as me and how did you choose the right keyword between two pages that have the same message?
