Do i need different IP addresses for mini sites?
-
Hi everyone
We are currently building some non-advertorial based mini sites the link to a main "money site", these mini sites are all run off wordpress or similar and have different designs, however all the WHOIS data remains under one company. So therefore I dont know if really you need different Class C IP's anymore as google et al will just look at the whois records and link the websites up that way?
Is this tactic still worth doing?
Thanks for any input!

I would very well say that SE's look at the IP address when measuring link-diversity. So the IP address does matter. No matter what is spoken (cutts). Just think how you would do it. Do you think they tell you the truth on every single detail? Don't be so naive..
-
No, no, I only block the Whois data on one website, which is just a fun blog I do to make people laugh in my small community in Florida. Being anonymous is half the fun
What I try to do when I create mini-sites is somehow provide value to the users - that's the best policy. If you create a mini-site ONLY for SEO, you're not going to add much value. But if you create a mini site that gives your users something different than they can find on your main site, you'll be adding value and SEO value as well.
Here's a for-instance. Let's say you are a mortgage broker and your primary website has tons of content on mortgages and the call to action is to submit an application.
Then, you create a mini site that has a ton of generic info and calculators for mortgages, and has listings of data in whatever location you're focusing on ranking your primary site.
This mini site could be a simple Wordpress install and wouldn't take too much work, but it's adding real value for your users.
Does that make sense?

There is no problem with hosting things on the same server that's true no argument there.
But if you're planning on setting up microsites to boost one main site, and you set them all up on the IP address don't expect them to pass along the same link juice as sites on different IP addresses.
-
So do you have many false WHOIS data records then? Or are you just upfront? I think honesty is the best policy maybe?
-
Actually, I disacree with Wissam and Tompt. Google expressly lets people know that they don't look at IP addresses in their rankings. So, if you own a dedicated or virtual private server, you can create all of your sites on that server. That's what I've done for years with no problems.
Here is Matt Cutts on IP addresses.

yeah we do that as well
Some have been hit by panda update though, squidoo seems to be pulling through ok, others have died of death! There are some in there I dont use tho, so thanks for the heads up!
Of course the magic is to create some amazing content / viral thats get hit on a lot, but as we all know thats difficult when budgets are low and you are dealing with a sales based site instead of something free / personal.

Thanks for the reply! What would you suggest currently looking into more than "link wheel" ideas? Away from twitter et al... contextual link systems seem to be dead, link buying is a no no... its just a mind field at the moment!

I agree with Wissam Dandan, you definitely need different IP addresses and the other things he listed (not 100% sure on the whois data, but it's likely, better to be safe than sorry). It's an expensive and desperate move, but if you have no other source for links it can be a viable option.
I've used it in very tight niches before and it has helped, but it's a lot of work and a reasonable amount of money you might be better off spending elsewhere.
In addition, if for some reason it's picked up, you lose all that benefit and effort.

This Tactic is expensive and take much time to implement.
because you need to have each mini site, hosted on different class C ip, Different TLDs, Different Whois, different GA / Adsense codes (if implemented).
mainly this tactic is kinda popular in the gambling industry

Why are these sites outranking me?
I am trying to rank for the phrase "a link between worlds walkthrough" I am on page 1 but there are several results that just outranks me and I cannot see any reason that they would be doing so. My site is hiddentriforce.com/a-link-between-worlds/walkthrough/ For that page I have 5 linking domains, varied anchor text that spans from things like "here" to a variety of related phrases. All of the links come from really good sites My page has 1400 likes, 90 shares, and about 20 each in tweets and +'s DA of 44 PA of 37 The 4 and 5 ranked sites both have WAY less social interactions, lower PA and DA, less links, etc Yet they outrank me why?

Need to shorten and change site-wide meta titles (50.000 pages). OK to do all at once?
Just noticed that google completely screws up our meta titles in the SERPs. Google decided to show titles which are not understandable to visitors and worst of all even shows titles in different languages than the actual page. The words of the displayedf titles are nowhere on the page (actually they are parts of old title tags that we stopped using 6 months ago and that we used on different pages). Pages are crawled weekly. All our meta titles are a bit longer than the 70 character limit, so I plan to rephrase and shorten them so that they are all max. 66 characters. Dynamically we choose different variations of title texts based on character length of keywords. Having titles that fit into SERPs without cutting are supposed to have less probability to be changed by google. I heard some people reporting loss of rankings after site-wide meta title changes. Especially since we changed title tags sitewide already about 6 months ago I am a bit concerned. How would you proceed? Just do the site-wide change all at once?

Our quilting site was hit by Panda/Penguin...should we start a second "traffic" site?
I built a website for my wife who is a quilter called LearnHowToMakeQuilts.com. However, it has been hit by Panda or Penguin (I’m not quite sure) and am scared to tell her to go ahead and keep building the site up. She really wants to post on her blog on Learnhowtomakequilts.com, but I’m afraid it will be in vain for Google’s search engine. Yahoo and Bing still rank well. I don’t want her to produce good content that will never rank well if the whole site is penalized in some way. I’ve overly optimized in linking strongly to the keywords “how to make a quilt” for our main keyword, mainly to the home page and I think that is one of the main reasons we are incurring some kind of penalty. First main question: From looking at the attached Google Analytics image, does anyone know if it was Panda or Penguin that we were “hit” by? And, what can be done about it? (We originally wanted to build a nice content website, but were lured in by a get rich quick personality to rather make a “squeeze page” for the Home page and force all your people through that page to get to the really good content. Thus, our avenge time on site per person is terrible and Pages per Visit is low at: 1.2. We really want to try to improve it some day. She has a local business website, Customcarequilts.com that did not get hit. Second question: Should we start a second site rather than invest the time in trying to repair the damage from my bad link building and article marketing? We do need to keep the site up and running because it has her online quilting course for beginner quilters to learn how to quilt their first quilt. We host the videos through Amazon S3 and were selling at least one course every other day. But now that the Google drop has hit, we are lucky to sell one quilting course per month. So, if we start a second site we can use that to build as a big content site that we can use to introduce people to learnhowtomakequilts.com that has Martha’s quilting course. So, should we go ahead and start a new fresh site rather than to repair the damage done by my bad over optimizing? (We’ve already picked out a great website name that would work really well with her personal facebook page.) Or, here’s a second option, which is to use her local business website: customcarequilts.com. She created it in 2003 and has had it ever since. It is only PR 1. Would this be an option? Anyway I’m looking for guidance on whether we should pursue repairing the damage and whether we should start a second fresh site or use an existing site to create new content (for getting new quilters to eventually purchase her course). Need your thoughts on my site
Hi, This is my site: http://hemorrhoidssuccess.com/ I have got some decent natural links with a mix of different anchor texts. My main keyword is "Hemorrhoids Treatment", And i got very less exact match anchor texts. Now i was able to rank for "Top Hemorrhoid Treatment" on #2 Page, but i was not in the index for the my main keyword "Hemorrhoids Treatment". Can you review my site and let me know, what i am missing? Do i need to get more links? If so with what anchor texts? Will be waiting for your replies.. Thanks in Advance

Adding Meta Languange tag to xhtml site - coding help needed
I've had my site dinged by Google and feel it's likely several quality issues and I'm hunting down these issues. One of Bing's Webmaster SEO tools said my xhtml pages (which were built in 2007) are missing Meta Language and suggested adding tag in the or on the html tag. Wanting to "not mess anything up" and validate correctly, I read in **W3C's site and it said: ** "Always add a lang attribute to the html tag to set the default language of your page. If this is XHTML 1.x you should also use the xml:lang attribute (with the same value). Do not use the meta element with http-equiv set to Content-Language." My current html leads like: QUESTION:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | mlm12
I'm confused on how to add the Meta Language to my website given my current coding as I"m not a coder. Can you suggest if I should add this content-language info, and if so, what is the best way to do so, considering valid w3c markup for my document type? Thank you!!!
