Google Places verification
-
What advice do you have for achieving verification for Google Places for a client?
I have a client at the moment and I tried getting the call sent through and I'm not sure what happened but a couple of tries at this did not work. I've tried the post card way and I'm still waiting.
Do I need to be more patient in Australia for this verification post card?
Is there a way I can verify the info myself?
note: I have set up a seperate email that there business email to handle a lot of the link building but this is different to there business email which Google uses.

I'm not sure if it was related to postcard delays or not, but Google Places had some outages up until recently. I'd recommend being patient with the postcards as well - you can re-request a PIN, but if you do so and the original card shows up it'll no longer be valid. sigh Phone isnt always an option either - if you're claiming a listing chances are you'll have to wait it out until the card arrives.

We use a call center to handle our leads, and ideally wanted that to be the number on the Google places rather then a direct line. Essentially we just called up the call center ourselves and told them that the call will be coming soon, then asked them to write the code down, then they just emailed it over.
So long as your customers aren't too computer-illiterate I'm sure you could just pre warn them about the call to make sure they're prepared for it.

we have an automated phone system and needed Google to send the card. The important thing is to get it verified.

This is probably the advice I needed. I will make an effort to make clients a little more aware of the importance of this and to really keep an eye out for the postcard. Thanks Hansjorg.

Hi Daniel,
If you click the submit button in you Google Places account, Google makes the call right away - should "normally" be no big deal. I made the experience though, that sometimes the customers are overburden with that phone call option, that's why I mostly take that postcard option. It can definetifly be up to one month or 5 weeks if they get the card. I just tell the customer several times that they have to look at their mail very properly because this post card with the pincode is very very unimpressive.
In the Google Places profile is the address and phone nr° of the business location - so you only have the chance to verify it by yourself if you are present when the phone call or the sms from Google comes in.

Interest in optimise Google Crawl
Hello, I have an ecommerce site with all pages crawled and indexed by Google. But I have some pages with multiple urls like : www.sitename.com/product-name.html and www.sitename.com/category/product-name.html There is a canonical on all these pages linking to the simplest url (so Google index only one page). So the multiple pages are not indexed, but Google still comes crawling them. My question is : Did I have any interest in avoiding Google to crawl these pages or not ? My point is that Google crawl around 1500 pages a day on my site, but there are only 800 real pages and they are all indexed on Google. There is no particular issue, so is it interesting to make it change ? Thanks

Google + and Schema
I've noticed with a few of the restaurant clients I work with that Schema isn't contributing at all to their SERP -- their Google + page is. Is there any way to have more control over what Google is pulling to help make UX better? I.e. showing photos of the restaurant without a logo, etc.

Does Google read code as is or as rendered?
Question - Does Google read code as is or as rendered? So for example, with a Facebook Like box, it has all the profile pictures of people...will Google see these as all separate links or ignore them?

Places Listing in Search Results
Hi everyone, We have a company that hired us to set-up their Google Places listing for their 2nd location. The listing for the 1st location is very strong. Lots of reviews, Zagat rating, Knowledge graph, etc. In the search results the Google Places listing for the 1st location has merged with the website listing. You can see the link to the main site w/ a small grey google places listing directly below it. The client would like BOTH Google places listing to show up in the search results. They both show up on the map listing but not in the search results. Each location has its own listing in Google Places. We have also created different pages on the website for each location. Is there a way to get the search results to display places listings? I have noticed a few other business have done it by naming each of their multiple locations something slightly different. Then the search results seem to realize there are multiple locations and display the places listing in the search results. Anyone run into this? Any ideas? Thanks!!

Site Indexed by Google but not Bing or Yahoo
Hi, I have a site that is indexed (and ranking very well) in Google, but when I do a "site:www.domain.com" search in Bing and Yahoo it is not showing up. The team that purchased the domain a while back has no idea if it was indexed by Bing or Yahoo at the time of purchase. Just wondering if there is anything that might be preventing it from being indexed? Also, Im going to submit an index request, are there any other things I can do to get it picked up?

Is Affiliate masking a problem for Google?
Does Google consider affiliate masking as unethical? I have a offer website that has 1000's of affiliate links that are masked. I feel google does not like masking URL's which is why my ranking started dropping. Can any one explain the context of affiliate masking please?

Will this get penalized by google?
I had a thought recently, and perhaps it is a pretty bad thought, but i don't see the flaw in it, or how google would really detect it, so please correct me where I am wrong here. Say we ran some sort of marketing campeign and through that campeign we created about 100 extra pages on our domain. A lot of these pages are heavily shared on facebook, twitter, google+ etc. These pages also have several backlinks here and there. Now this campaign is over and so these pages no longer seem relevant to us. If we were to add 301 redirects to all these pages, to three different (and unrelated) internal pages (our primary targets) would this pass all the accumulated link juice on to those three target internal pages? Or would this behaviour get penalized by google?
