Where should a knowledge base be hosted for max. SEO benefit?

A client would like to set up a knowledge base to work in conjunction with their website and we are tossing up whether to go with a hosted solution (and therefore set up as a subdomain) or find a solution that we host on the clients domain (which will presumably have more SEO benefit). We are leaning towards the latter (although are mindful that we need to balance the client’s desire for a quality KB solution). Appreciate your feedback.

KB's are great for user generated content (just look at this one). If it was open to all just imagine how many links it would be attracting!!
Obviously your KB would be for SEO benefits, and therefore the best method for gaining from it would be to host it on the clients domain in a sub folder. Most open source CMS's can easily be modified into Knowledge bases with relative little ease - one thing I should recommend is heavy moderation on all posts to ensure that no incorrect answers or spam goes live, as this would make their business look poor.

The question has already been very well answered. Having a comprehensive knowledge base on the same domain in separate folder can yield maximum and best SEO benefits.

Subdomains do not work very well. I would go in with a folder within the domain itself. I would further name the folder something intuitive which would lead more people finding information about your client's niche to the website. The architecture is very important for the KB as it can be very effective in terms of cross selling as well.

Completely agree with EGOL. You want this on the main domain for the most benefit.
I'm not sure about this, and it's complete speculation, but I would suspect that a subdomain that has the DNS A record pointed at a different server would be identified by Google as belonging to the hosted knowledgebase solution. That's the way those hosted solutions work. So, while you would get some credit from a subdomain on the same server as your main domain, you might not get much from a hosted solution setup like this.
Unfortunately, this means you'll have to build your own knowledgebase system, or use an open source or paid solution. It means more time to setup, but will definitely be worthwhile, especially if the point of the knowledgebase is for SEO.

I agree. I would go with putting the KB in a folder on the clients domain. That way, links into the KB will be hitting the main site instead of a subdomain.

SEO Campign Wont Synch up with facebook
Bonjour.... After enthusiastically telling a client we had a new offering where we could offer more insights into social media activity i enthusiatically dived into SEO Moz's social reporting tab with the ainm of synching the report to the clients facebook page. Is there SEO value in having images referenced on other sites?
We use Amazon to host our assets (images, videos, PDFs, etc). These assets can be used across multiple sites we own and we reference them appropriately via our CMS. example asset URL: https://s3.amazonaws.com/lawgical/assets/data/539/original.png We have an infographic we recently distributed that is hosted on Amazon. Obviously we want any link value to go back to our primary URL where we laid out the infographic, however some of the infographic sites are just referencing the above source image URL. Are we losing SEO / link value by not have the infographic hosted on our domain? Do search engines count these image references as a "link"? For your reference... Wordpress Problems.. SEO-Yoast is Toast?
Hello; I have installed the WP Yoast Widget in my Blog, and 2 weeks, after my issues went away, they came back X's 300! lol So I uninstalled it, and my issues obviously got worse, and then I re-activated, and reset everything, and still got the 300+ issues. Is there a secondary plug in you would suggest, to run at the same time as Yoats, or theat will fix all issues? Ever think of making an SEOmoz Widget for WP since it is gaining so much popularity?? Switching Hosting & SEO
Hello friends, We are facing the prospect of switching to a new hosting account or company. We are currently using a third-party reseller account but are outgrowing that account. We are considering VPS and dedicated servers. However, this will mean updates for IPs and nameservers. Does anyone have experience with SEO consequences of making switch? Best practices? Tips? Obstacles? Any and all comments/advice welcome. We're trying to balance the potential SEO ramifications of making the switch with the consequences of reduced site speed.

ECommerce Platform Switch and SEO Loss
Hi - We're switching eCommerce platforms, and naturally we're worried about losing organic search ranking. From what I've read on the message boards, I understand it's important to try to minimize as many 301 redirects as possible. Here's my problem: Our Product URLs are like this (ex: http://www.stupid.com/fun/TOLMG.html). On the new platform, URLs cannot contain capital letters. 😞 According to the new eCommerce platform's design team: "Google and other search engines do not see that as a change in URL, they are not case sensitive and will not affect search listings" How accurate is this? And how come on our current platform, if I use an all lowercase URL, it get a 401? (ex: http://www.stupid.com/fun/tolmg.html) Will we be fine switching our Product URLs to lowercase on the new platform? One thing also to note: Our Category URLs will remain the same. Are there any other areas of a typical eCommerce store that I should avoid changing URLs if I want to prevent SEO loss? Thanks! -Justin

Huge and sudden fall in SEO traffic
Hi, I’m writing you because we have noticed in Google Analytics account, a huge fall in the SEO traffic of mywebsite, starting suddenly in one precise day. The difference between this day and the previous one is: -46,36% . Traffic has fallen in all parts of the site in the same way. Some details: - we did not make any relevant change to the website - we haven’t been banned by Google (or we don’t have any message about it in GWT) - the number of the landing pages remains approximately the same - the number of indexed keywords falls from 9.000 to 4.000. - around 2 weeks ago we found out around 120 pages with 404 error, but the error now is solved and the pages are currently working we open the content to Google about 4 months but still we have not published our Site Map. I know that the 404 error could could affect the indexation, but do you have any other idea, apart of this, of what could have happened? Thanks!
