Our Twitter App
-
Hi Mozzers,
We had a question about our twitter app http://www.arenaflowers.com/flowers-fun/flowers/home This app sends messages out to tweeters for their Birthday, to say congratulations etc.
Our question relates to the fact that we are generating 1,000 of pages of content (like this:http://www.arenaflowers.com/flowers-fun/flowers/message?id=394447 ) with some unique content, but these orphaned pages aren't really linked to and only have short-term traffic influx. Our question is whether these small, orphaned pages are likely to be seen as lots of random, low quality, low content pages - and whether that might hurt our Google ranking. Sometimes the virtual cards are linked to by blogs and tweets etc, so we don't want them not indexed but equally, we don't want our rankings to be damaged by them.
Wonder if anyone has any thoughts, opinions or any similar experience?
Thanks,
Arena Flowers

Yes, rel=canonical seem perfect for this job.
And I highly recommend doing it, as so many pages might be seen as low-qualoty content by Google post-panda, and thereby hurt your entire site.

If you only have a few pages and then lots of the same with just a different id you could mark it as parameter in Google Webmaster Tools as Barry Suggests and add the canonical as John suggests. The one thing you would need to do in those cases is change your 302 to 301 on http://www.arenaflowers.com/flowers-fun/flowers/message page when it redirects to home otherwise you will loose link juice.
I would also suggest you run your site through http://gtmetrix.com/ as the image load times were up to 15secs and print.css is returning a 404 error. You should also run your home page through the On Page reports on SEOMoz.

I like this idea best
You could also specify in webmaster tools to ignore the 'id' parameter but that's a bit risky depending on how the rest of your site is built.
-
I'm by no means an expert but I would have thought the best option would be to put a canonical tag in each of the specific messages pointing back to your app's main page.
That way any of your cards that do get indexed should end up helping the rankings for your app not the individual pages.

Meta tags in Single Page Apps
Since the deprecation of the AJAX Crawling Scheme back last October I am curious as to when Googlebot actually reads meta tag information from a page. We have a website at whichledlight.com that is implemented using emberjs. Part of the site is our results pages (i.e. gu10-led-bulbs). This page updates the meta and link tags in the head of the document for things like canonicalisation and robots, but can only do so after the page finishes loading and the JavaScript has been run. When the AJAX crawling scheme was still in place we were able to prerender these pages (including the modified meta and link tags) and serve these to Googlebot. Now Googlebot no longer uses these prerendered snapshots and instead is sophisticated enough load and run our site.So the question I have is does Googlebot read the meta and links tags downloaded from the original response or does it wait until the page finishes rendering before reading them (including any modifications that have been performed on them)

Autoposting to Twitter
Hi all, I have a Twitter account. I have some data i receive from a third party. When new data arrives (these are football lineups) I want to post this to my Twitter. The data arrives approximately 60-30 minutes before matches start. So if I use twitterfeed i can get the data checked each 30 minutes - but this can result in tweets with data for matches that already started. How can i post my data automatically...and almost instantly upon reception? Not sure if this issue is for the MOZ forum, but I am pretty certain that there are some good developers out there that could help me? -Rasmus

Where is Schema, Twitter cards and OpenGraph code need?
Hello, I've adding OpenGraph, Twitter cards and Google's Schema code to my website to help these services pick the correct information about my website. I'm doing this as per the Moz SEO cheatsheet. Does these rich snippets need to be on the index page only, or should they appear on every page?

OpenSite Explorer doesn't show Twitter
When I type competitors sites into opensiteexplorer it shows their Twitter page as one of the tops links back. However, my site, our Twitter page isn't even on the links back. Does twitter even though no follow hold any value? Why can't opensite explorer see it? If OSE can't see it then do you think Google isn't?

DoubleClick Floodlight tags & SEOMoz Chrome App
Hi guys Newbie here looking for some advice from you SEO gurus. I've installed SEOMoz's chrome app and, visiting my site's homepage, when I open click the SEOMoz icon and it opens the dialogue window, i get analytics for a doubleclick url. Now, my homepage does have a doubleclick tag on it, but it's waay down in the page source. Is there something I should be doing here to stop this happening? Surely the app should find my site's URL over the DoubleClick tag? Looking at the guidelines for DoubleClick, it says that the Floodlight tags need to be placed between the tags. They're sitting outside these tags on my homepage. Do you think this might be causing the issue? I'm sure this is going to be an embarrassing lesson in SEO 101, but I'm keen to learn and to fix this if possible. Thanks!

Do any short url's pass link juice? googles own? twitters?
I've read a few posts saying not shorten links at all but we have a lot to tweet and need to. Is googles shortener the best option? I've considered linking to the category index page the article is on and expect the user to find the article and click on the article, I don't like the experience that creates though. I've considered making the article permalink tiny but I would lose the page title being in the url. Is this the best option?
