Should I worry about limiting link count on product listing/category pages?
-
I've noticed that my link count is high (165ish for some) on my category listing pages. I've been scouring my page to see if there's any way that I can reduce the link count without restricting functionality to the end user.
Each product listing on the category page has 5 links currently:
- A link to the product in the title
- A link to the product from the image
- An 'add to compare' link
- An 'add to cart' link
- An 'add to wishlist' link
When the customer chooses to show 30 products per page, the link tally goes off the scale. So I have two questions:
Firstly - is it appropriate to keep link count down in this scenario? To elaborate - is it just inevitable that product listing pages will have lots of links, and should I just assume that Google knows this and forget about these warnings.
Secondly - There are two links to the same page (the title and image links to the product page). Does SEOmoz include this in the link count, and more importantly, will Google take heed of these when deciding whether the page is too link-heavy?

I'm sorry Simon but you have reached the extent of my knowledge on the topic. Many things can only be answered by a Google employee...who can't answer because of a non-disclosure agreement.
Our sources of Google info are primarily Matt Cutts, official Google announcements and the occasional response shared by a Google employee on their forums.
I would agree with you that Google is quite capable or reading and executing javascript if they want to. I plan to perform a lot of various testing in the future and this sounds like a good candidate. In the mean time, I'd welcome any additional knowledge or experience others can share on this topic.

Thanks for the thorough response Ryan.
I've changed the add-to links to onclick=setLocation(). It seems logical to separate the 'functional' elements of a website from the content elements.
I've read some differing opinions about the use of Javascript instead of HTML, with some people suggesting that Google is just as capable of reading Javascript syntax. Whilst I'm sure that's true, it seems like a pretty rational way of distinguishing between content and function, and I'm curious to know whether Google makes that distinction, and whether it's considered standard best-practice to separate your linking methods in this way...?

Thanks Stephen, I've seen some of the debate, but I'm more curious what sort of strategy is best for ecommerce sites specifically, where many of the links serve as functions rather than content links (as Ryan mentions below). Any pointers?

Is it just inevitable that product listing pages will have lots of links, and should I just assume that Google knows this and forget about these warnings.
When you offer 165 links on the page, they all receive the same link juice, adjusted for where they appear on the page (i.e. header, footer, navigation) and with the idea the links at the top of the page are probably given more value then links lower on the page. To this end, it has nothing to do with what Google knows, and more with how you view the importance of your pages.
One possible idea. Can the "add to" links be presented in another format to where the links were not counted by Google? Add to cart, add to wishlist, add to compare don't seem to add any value to search engines. Perhaps they can be presented in a block together and not presented as links. As for the specific method, you can use encoded javascript or other options. I suggest speaking with a programmer on this topic.
Normally I don't endorse methods to hide links but these aren't links in the traditional sense. The user is not going anywhere but instead triggering an action. When a user clicks on a product link, that is a link in the traditional sense they are taken to a new page on your site. When a user clicks on one of the "add to" buttons, the user remains on the same page and an action is performed. If you do go with the javascript method, keep in mind any adjustments necessary for analytics tracking of actions.
There are two links to the same page (the title and image links to the product page). Does SEOmoz include this in the link count, and more importantly, will Google take heed of these when deciding whether the page is too link-heavy?
SEOmoz will count every link regardless of whether it is to the same target or not. No one knows for sure how Google handles the situation. Opinions on this topic vary. Over time I have seen theories going each way. We know for sure Google only associates anchor text with the first link to a target page. The weighting factors involved with multiple links are open to speculation.

High Page Authority / Low Domain Authority
I have been building links to the home page of my web site. At this point, the site has a DA of 22 and the home page has a PA of 35. I am a bit puzzled as to how the PA can be so much higher than DA. I suppose it might have something to do with the fact that most of the inbound links are going to the home page. Are there any other factors that might be contributing to this situation? Does it point to a weakness in our backlink profile?

Why does one page rank while a similar page doesn't?
We have a blog post (actually several of them that have the same SEO characteristics) that brings a fair amount of traffic to our site (relatively speaking), and according to Google Webmaster Tools it averages in the top 10 in SERPs for various terms. This page has no external links to it, and very few internal links pointing to it. When I run Moz's On-Page Grader for the various keywords it ranks for, the page get's an F on all of them. It was not optimized for any keyword, and it isn't our best content; it was a blog post written a few years ago and forgotten about and was never promoted in any way. The topic does happen to be about something that people search for frequently. According to the keyword difficulty tool, all of the keywords it ranks for have 40-45% difficulty. We have lots of other pages on our site that we have tried to optimize and that get A's and B's in On-Page Grader, that have both internal (from the home page and main menu) and external links pointing at them, etc, but they don't rank well at all. Keyword difficulty for these keywords is in the same range, from 37 - 53%. Why does this one page rank so well when the other pages don't? Additionally, we have been looking at a competitor who has a page that ranks #1 in universal results for numerous keywords according to SEMRush, yet the page gets an F On-page Grader for those keywords. The page has 3 links to it, all from the same domain and it has a very low domain and page authority. The Domain Authority of this page is 47 and the page authority is 33 according to Open Site Explorer (compared with our DA of 30, and PA of 1), and the social metrics are a bit higher than ours, but neither has a lot (they may have 15 likes to our 10). Why does this page rank so well for them? How can we get our Page Authority higher? Thanks for any and all help.

Sorting Dupe Content Pages
Hi, I'm no excel pro, and I'm having a bit of a challenge interpreting the Crawl Diagnostics export .csv file. I'd like to see at a glance which of my pages (and I have many) are the worst offenders for dupe content – ie. which have the most "Other URLs" associated with them. Thanks, would appreciate any advice on how other people are using this data, and/or how 'Moz recommends to do it. 🙂

Link not showing up in OSE
I created a profile in April this year on CrunchBase for my company http://www.crunchbase.com/company/wallpapered but it is not appearing in the "inbound links" of Open Site Explorer. All the other companies I have checked in OSE have their CrunchBase profile in their inbound links (many share the same Page authority as mine). Any suggestions would be really helpful. Thanks

Competitive Link Analysis Tool?
Hi, I ran a competitive link analysis report today and back came quite a few domains that 2 or more of my 5 main competitors link from. Is it worth me submitting links to these sites? And would i be best served submitting my homepage URL or submitting a brand page such as Creative Recreation Trainers? I want to target that brand but don't want to do it if my main URL is better? Any ideas? See below my report. | Subdomain | Subdomain mR | Subdomain mT | # Competitors | # Linking Pages | Link Acquired |

How Does On Page Analysis work
Hi guys, I just need to run something past you. when I look at my on page analysis I have 5 key terms I am focusing on. For instance one of them is "computer backup". According to the report the current grade is 'F' when looking at site page "/" which I assume is the home page.
Moz Pro | | cubetech
When I do a lookup on other pages of the site it gets a ranking of A. Which is good. But since the hompage ranking went from A to F my rankings have definitely been affect. So i guess my questions are: does "/" mean the hompage, or all pages overall. What should I really be looking at here. I am assuming that you select certain pages to target certain key words. Should i be focusing like this, or more to the "/". Thanks Guys hoping to clear this one up.0 -
