Optimization advice
-
Hi i am new to optimization and trying to learn how to do this. I am working on our site where we are trying to improve it and get people to come to the site through our articles. Our site is a lifestyle magazine that we are trying to make better.
An article we have published on Ryan Giggs affair, we have tried to optimize it but not sure if we have done this correctly with the title and content.
Here is the article Manchester United Footballer Ryan Giggs Wife Forgives Affair
can someone please look at the article here and see if we have done this correct or what we should have done.
any help would be great
-
I have done this article and have taken on board what has been said but what i am doing is trying four different ways. so on this one i have got rid of the adverts at the top and sorted out the side but i have included in the body of the article google adsense. i will do another article and move any adverts to the bottom right. and then i can compare them all.
here is the content. http://www.in2town.co.uk/Top-Celeb-News/Kerry-Katona-Homeless-Shock
-
When you do post that new article, please post it in the same thread as this is related, rather than opening a new question. This really helps people know the history of the question rather than starting from scratch. Thanks!
-
i agree. i am just about to write an articleon kerry katona which i will post on here with your recommendations and see the difference.
-
You also have the opportunity to set up A-B comparison experiments to check results. I know those poistion are best for revenue, but you are looking for visitors. It is a matter of having the traffic level, then getting the revenue positions optimised. If the site looks too much like an ad site, then you will not get the tweets and other social markers working for you.
-
thank you this looks amazing. i am going to study it now. The reason why i done that with google ads is because google adsense gives you positions of where to put the ads for maximum revenue.
what i will do is, to change the layout and have the two layouts working on the site and see which one gets more visitors.
many thanks for your help, this is great information
-
This is what I would suggest if you wnat to keep all those ads (I have an editor's mockup here to illustrate the idea http://www.dreambuilding.com.au/content/in2town.pdf ). Keep the articles as main focus on the site and use the top of the sidebar for related articles and move the advertising to the bottom of that column.
Think of it this way, if you get 20% of your visitors clicking the ads in your current position but you only 100 vistors/day would it not produce better revenue to get 10% click through and have 1000 visitors a day, by marking the site article centric rather than ad centric?
If you also HTML5 mark that ad content as 'aside' and the main atricle as a 'article' then your may even find Google changes the way it interperates the site design and moves up your ratings.
-
thanks for that. i have altered the page now to try and balance it. could you look and see if you feel it has now improved.
-
The long list I supplied was to give an indication of what I saw when I visited the site. Since these change regularly, I included what I saw as I found them to be sending the reverse message to the story which showed the wife forgave him yet the ads encouraged flurting etc. It was just a snapshot in time to highlight my point. The righthand column now looks more on topic since your change.
I agree with Steve and Ryan, in that the site is either about the story or about the ads and at the moment it's still about the ads and Google will rank acordingly.
-
i have just changed the ads on the right and would be happy if you feel this looks better and would be better for google. I am also thinking about putting under the picture a h2 tag and title to help google. maybe something like Ryan Giggs Escape Divorce Over Affair.
what do you think. i am trying to use this page to help me style all the other pages in the same manner and learn from them
-
i am glad you done the search as we wanted to try and find out how to solve this problem. we want people to find up to date articles on our site through google and this is one of the reasons why we have been working hard to try and sort the site out.
we were writing on average around 50 articles a day but were finding that not many were being found on google and we need to learn how to do this. i think i may do the following let me know what you think.
i may keep the google ads where they are and just have two ads on the right and in between the ads have other content from the site, like update articles showing like i do on the front page of our lifestyle magazine see here. http://www.in2town.co.uk
The most important issue before we look at making money from the site is to do what you have done by searching for the article. we need to know how to sort it out where our article can be found on google.
if anyone has any ideas or advice on what we can do to sort this out so our articles can be found then please do let me know
-
how many ads would you say we should have on the right hand column and do you think we have the google ads in the right place.
It depends on your goals. If your goal is to offer the best user experience and rank the best in search engines, then no ads is definitely best. If you need to earn money from the site and have determined ads are necessary, then that is something you need to decide. There is no magic number.
The more ads you offer, the lower the quality of your site. Google knows this and will adjust your ranking accordingly.
I tried a search for the title of your article "Ryan Giggs Wife Stacey" and your site does not even make the first page of Google. Take a look at the first result: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1390206/Ryan-Giggs-wife-Will-Stacey-forgive-again.html
That page offers more content and no ads. It will always outrank your site on that basis alone, not to mention the other factors. You are in a highly competitive market. Perhaps consider other ways to earn money from your site without ads.
-
hi i write all the articles myself. everything on the site is unique although we have had people stealling content which makes me angry. how many ads would you say we should have on the right hand column and do you think we have the google ads in the right place.
-
Being ad heavy is not going to help you anyway, Google doesn't like ad heavy and if it's too obvious that the article is there to get clicks on ads then your rankings will suffer (and it is ad heavy).
Did you write the article yourself, or have it written? I mean so it's a unique and original article? If it's just a slightly altered copy of another already existing article then that won't help a lot.

hi i am a bit confused ref the long llist

I want a good balance where we can generate income.Unfortunatley the site lacks income.

On thing that stands out is the 12 ads (below) that send the opposite message to the story. If you want to have articles that stand out and get return visitors, you need to have less of the ad revenue look to the site. I know the idea of having return visitors on the site is to attract adsense revenue but it has to be much more subtle to get a following.

Best Practices-Optimize Theme Before Coding or After Coding?
We purchased a Wordpress Real estate theme called wpcasa. My developer started coding it. We hired a new SEO. The SEO looked at a simple page (About Us) and saw about 70 Java scripts and 11 templates and was very dissatisfied with the coding and heavy source code contained in the theme. My SEO claims the optimizing this theme (removing the unnecessary Java Scripts and combining the templates is way too much work and that it would be better to start from scratch and purchase a theme like https://my.studiopress.com/themes/agentpress/ with more compact, efficient and streamlined code. Problem is we need to throw out 2 months and thousands of dollars worth of code. My SEO says that in the day of Google's "mobile first" streamlined code is particularly important. My developer has taken the position that the code can be cleaned up after the design. Where it seems my SEO wants clean code to stat with. I don't know who to is right. Any ideas? Am I better of starting from scratch with a new more efficient theme, or cleaning up the code on the wpcasa theme? The code for the test page is below. Thanks! | |

Optimal Link Structure - Internal Reciprocal Links
Reading the moz article on internal links, it mentions that the optimal link structure for a website should look like a pyramid. Are these one-way links or reciprocal links? Does it matter when trying to get keyword optimized pages to rank*? If so, under what conditions should one be used instead of the other. Related:

Going Mobile - Advice Requested
Hi, I run a website called tvfoodmaps.com. We currently have a desktop website and a mobile app (native apps). However the largest community of our users tend to use our desktop site on their mobile phones. Our bounce rate is about 12% higher for mobile devices than desktop users and our pages per visit drops by almost 50% from desktop to mobile. My hypothesis is that mobile users when presented with a "designed for desktop" site are more likely to leave since the navigation isn't as natural. I'm considering investing in either a responsive design for the site or a dedicated mobile site and wanted the communities input on what metrics I should be looking at to determine "is it worth it"? Or should I just stick with service the desktop version to the mobile users?

Searching for BEST e-Commerce Multilanguage Platform, Need Advice
I have 2 online store in Canada. Both are selling One bilingual (English&french) Filtration Montreal and a unilinguale store Furnace Filters Canada Both are offering the same products at the same price for Canadian. We work hard to rank on Google.ca because we only sell and ship to Canada. The platform of Filtration Montreal is very basic and limited. For example, the url structure make it very hard to rank on Google.ca This platform is very not SEO friendly with url like: http://www.filtrationmontreal.com/en/product/honeywell-genuine-filter-95/pack-of-5-genuine-honeywell-furnace-filters-20x20x5-601.html The only good thing about this platform, is the multilingual option. The customer can shop in french or English. I would like to move that store to a new platform where I can create a multilingual online store. Do you have sugestions? Furnace Filters Canada is on BigCommerce. I find it SEO friendly. Using SEOmoz tools and new to SEO, high competitive keywords like: furnace filters, furnace filter are ranking on 3rd rank in Google.ca fist page! This site is getting more & more visitors every months. The only frustrating thing is the English only version of the stores to customers. QUESTIONS: What will be the SEO impact if I'm moving Furnace Filters Canada to a new platform? Do you have suggestions in finding the perfect multilanguage e-Commerce platform? Andrew Bleakley suggest Ashop. Anybody using Ashop? How about a eCommerce platform that can manage my 2 stores at the same time. REMEMBER, we sell and ship to Canada only. Thank you for your help and support. BigBlaze

Why is Google sending traffic to our homepage, not our optimized pages?
Hello Forum, My team and I just completely redid a yoga eCommerce site, including its SEO. The old version of the site didn't feature page-specific optimization and, as a result, Google's search results for our keywords almost always directed visitors to the homepage. For example, a Google search for the term "yoga bolster" sent users to the homepage, not the product category page for yoga bolsters. After redoing the site and optimizing specific pages (i.e. the yoga bolster page is now optimized for the keyword "yoga bolster"), the Google search results are still taking users to the homepage, not the optimized page. (i.e. if you search for yoga bolster, find our search result, and click the search result link, you're taken to the homepage, not the bolster page) It's only been about 36 hours since we've launched the new website and submitted it to Google's webmaster tools. Does anyone know why Google is still sending people to our homepage and not the keyword-optimized pages we created? Is this a timing issue?

Advice regarding Panda
I'd like some feedback on what would be a Panda factor(s) on http://www.duhaime.org The site got hit fairly hard by Panda (60% drop in traffic). Since then we have: redesigned the site (responsive and progressive), reduce the average links/page to ~35 from over 100, Use AJAX to delay the loading of boiler plate and nav elements, Improved the search functionality, Added more content images (still in progress), Removed the citations section to new sub-domain, and 1000's of little code fixes and enhancements The site, by nature of being a legal reference, contains many small, single topic pages. The authority and professionalism of the site demands it doesn't allow much UGC. (The law is not Social Media) Unfortunately, this means the bulk of the page (1000+) are fairly formulaic - to format otherwise would diminish the value to the user. This doesn't hurt many individual pages as shown by the dominance the "Without Prejudice" page enjoys. In particular, the citations section was very limited as there is not very much one can say about the 10,000+ law reports in the world. Recognizing this as valuable to lawyers but a likely "low value" target of Panda, we moved it to a sub domain and requested the old directory was removed from the index. This was done on July 28th. Now... I'd like some opinions on anything else that might be holding the site back. Thank you for you time.

Setup of three major retail sites.. need advice.
I recently have taken a new position responsible for three large national retail sites which are all owned by one parent organization. Through a series of acquisitions, these three major brands have been brought under one umbrella and a brand consolidation is likely not to happen within the next 2-4 years. I have a number of questions I’m hoping to get some feedback on, but first a little more background is necessary. A year ago (before my time) the three sites were over-hauled, but were designed to use one common custom CMS and all of the navigation and nearly all the content is the same (with some exceptions, such as tags, url, etc.). All of the brands have identical products and services; however, each one services a different demographic in the US. The design was intended for ease of management, but is terrible for seo. Additionally, without the geographic reference, they all compete for the same keywords. They have now begun a very large ecommerce project utilizing an ATG platform. The initial direction is to use one platform for all three brands, but keep them on separate domains and with the use of basic switching, replace nominal content such as logos and references of the brands for each of the domains. I’m concerned with this approach and would like to hear your feedback.. When optimizing a page for one keyword set, are they likely to be filtered due to dup content? The argument that management has is that all three current sites rank very well for one keyword on all three sites. They feel it won’t be an issue due to this. One option, that is currently still available, is to tri-band one ecommerce site, but it would have to be on an entirely new domain. The other three domains are very well established and are PR6s. Management, and even I, is afraid to abandon these other domains, but having a single domain would allow us to have unique content and really leverage all efforts to one domain. Thoughts? Any knowledge or thoughts what kind of impact having three domains on one ATG platform will be? Thanks much! John If you feel it will help, please message me and I can share the urls... Also, how would you handle a company blog in this case?

Need advice on diplaying content for Search
Hi every body, I am doing landing page redesign(s). Does any body know or can refer a content carousel that can rotate video and pictures? The "site with images" search option result is a compelling reason to showcase pictures if your space competeiveness (showroom, merchandise, etc) can be improved with a strong image presence. here is my main landing page http://www.shearerpainting.com I know there is alot of stuff, and confusing call to action, but I am looking for strategies to clean it up, clear fous on action (get bid, learn more), but allow users to see that they can dig for more content.
