Problems with OSE downloads
-
Ordered 5 reports last 24 hours, none received. Anyone else with this problem ? I do expect better from an expensive subscription. C'mon Moz, fix this new OSE report system please.
-
No problem! I'm so sorry for the inconvenience!
I just pushed the remaining pending reports through, so I think you should be set, but if you continue to run into any problems, just let me know!
-
Thanks Carin! Appreciate it
-
Hey there!
Haha - we ran into a problem on Monday night with one of the machines falling over causing a huge backlog to pile up. We were able to get things back on track yesterday and churn through the backed up reports, but with the index launch yesterday, we're seeing a bit of a backlog again this morning.
We are getting a monster machine up right now to speed through this! Once things calm down you should see these come through. It looks like you have about 8 pending - I'll keep an eye on them to make sure they go through!
Thanks,
Carin -
I am still getting problems downloading reports. They have been going for 5 hours now. Has the log increased again? Could you not use some of that $18m to buy a few more servers?
-
Hey! Same message to you
If you want me to look into your account, feel free to email me at carin@seomoz.org!
Just provide some info on what URL you are looking for, what tab you're requesting from and if you have any filters applied and we'll look into why these certain ones are having issues.
Thanks for your patience!!!
Carin

Hey! I need some more info from you and I can look into it - feel free to email me at carin@seomoz.org.
You're not being difficult - I understand the frustration
If you can provide your account information in an email to me, as well as any information regarding which tab you're requesting from and what URL you are querying for and if you were applying any filters.
Thanks!
Carin

I'm quite sure I only requested most of the ones pending ones, not a second time. Only a view of them to try out. Like they said they are working on it.
-
In exactly the same situation, may be something to do with requesting the same report a few times because it didn't come through first time ? Looks like it's close to being fixed though by the Moz team.
-
Hi Carin
Not being difficult but pushed for time, can you not simply access my account and have a look yourself ?
Thanks & Regards
-
I can confirm all except one which were on finalizing are done now. Thanks! the other has the same issue now as addressed below.
There are still like 11 reports starting from scratch every time I visit the csv export page without coming further than around 30%. Others with exactly the same issue are finished though. So it's a bit random why it works for the one and not the other.
I'm not doing anything related to link building today so I've got all patience to wait till it's resolved
-
Hey! Can you give me some more information so I can dig into this? Looks like the last batch of 100 reports is crunching through now, but I'd still like to find out why you're not getting yours.
Can you send me some info on the request like: the site searched, any filters used and from which tab.
Thanks!
Carin

Just checked, still no change with the pending reports at my end.
Thanks

Hey guys!
I wanted to jump in here and give you all the lastest on the CSV download issue. We were finally able to clear through the backlog of CSV reports about 7 pm PST last night, however, there were about 3,000 jobs that were still in a finalizing status and just hanging. We were able to work a quick fix to get these last remaining reports out today. The fix was such a great idea, we've decided to make it a permanent feature in Open Site Explorer!
Since the new launch of OSE, we've had reports of users requesting reports that end up hanging during high peak times. The fix we added today will help in those scenarios by re-queueing the report if it is hanging for a long period of time.
I'm hoping this helped get the last of the missing reports out, but please let me know if you guys are still seeing pending or hanging requests.
Thanks!
Carin

1:46am - I'll sleep when OSE is doing its job for you!
-
Thanks for the response. The issues are worth the improvements. Looking at it long term, a lot has become better
Some reports are in, others still pending. I can wait a couple days. Thanks again.
-
Just checked, some have completed, others still pending that I ordered about 48 hours ago.
What time is it there ? Do you sleep ? you're crazier than me !
Regards
-
If you're not getting them, you should probably try re-filing. Reports should be taking <6 hours at the very most. We were seeing many that were <1 hour.
I'll ask the team to hop in this thread, too, in case I've gotten any details conveyed incorrectly.
-
Thanks Rand, I am sure I speak for the others with this problem when I say many thanks for personally looking at this. As always, excellent service.
Just to be clear, does this mean that the pending reports clogging up my downloads will be cancelled or automatically generated ? Not received any of them yet.
Warm regards

Hey gang - sorry for my delay getting in here. We had a crazy day.
Here's what happened and why OSE report downloads have been slow:
- Last week, we had some volume spikes. The new OSE V3 offers a lot more download functionality, and everyone's been using that functionality a lot (awesome, but also a big load)
- We had some technical operational issues that slowed things up on OSE for about 24 hours, creating a huge backlog of reports
- We tried to simultaneously scale the capacity and segment the downloaded requests so they wouldn't interfere with load on the rest of the platform
- Today, we finally cleared the queue fully and reports should be back to fairly speedy
I'm really sorry about this. The tech behind scaling is challenging and our engineering team worked their butts off, but I know there's no excuse when you need a report or to do some work. We're going to work very hard over the next few weeks to try and make sure we get better with uptime/responsiveness/speed/etc.
Thanks for the patience - and keep your eyes out for more improvements/upgrades in data quality, size and speed coming in the next few months.
Cheers,
Rand

I've got an email back from Aaron from seomoz with an answer. (I also submitted the issue with the feedback button);
It looks like we're having some troubles getting caught up on the many reports that were generated while our servers were running amiss last week, which is why reports and the UI are wonky today. It may take another day or two for the reports to finally generate. I'm really sorry for the inconvenience; we hope to have OSE and the Linkscape data fully operational in the next couple days or so. Let me know if you're still not able to get your reports by then or if there's anything else I can do to help you.
Have a great week!
Aaron__
So a couple days patience and everything should be fine. Thanks Aaron for the response
Maybe that also includes the info Rand wanted to say?
-
Actually, Rand tried to respond to this last night, but it looks like Roger must have gone and done something with his response. I've let Rand know his reply didn't make it, and he'll be back in later this morning with a reply. Thanks for your patience!

We have the same problem
Several reports made the 24th August are still "Finalizing**"**, but one made the 26th is complete and we could download it.
-
looks like this is a significant issue - anyone from Moz listening ?
-
Here as well big problems. I'm stuck the whole day with a certain task because the backlink exports aren't coming in. They get stuck at around 30% or something. When I reload the page it starts generating again as off 0%. It just won't finish.
5 days ago (the 24th) I also did a bunch of exports and none of them have finished up till now. It says finalizing for 5 days now and I don't get the needed csv exports. This is an urgent issue, because I'm quite dependent on OSE as link builder.
I really hope this get solved asap. I love OSE when it works though
-
BTW your attached report is EXACTLY what I am also getting, loads of "pending".
-
Have to say I agree 100%. I love SEOMoz but the new OSE is a problem, and it doesn't seem to be being taken seriously. I asked Rand about this via twitter last night, was reluctant to do so, have also emailed the helpdesk, but still the same problem today. the old method, perhaps more basic of downloading yourself to xl, worked. Paying a lot for a subscription service that doesn't work is annoying.
C'mon Moz, sort it please 1

Hi,
I have been having HUGE problems with OSE for the last few days.
It is getting to the point where I will be looking to stop using my SEO moz account and looking for alternant options with other providers.
It is sooo buggy.
what are the team doing to fix it apart from directing us to a video of a dog? I mean Funny video but in all seriousness I just want the reports so I can carry on with business.

Internal Links Data on OSE and poor ranking despite excellent metrics
Hi folks, I use OSE a lot for comparing where we stand against our competitors and I'm always surprised to see most of our competitors have loads more internal links than we do. For example, comparing 'www.kensyard.co.uk' with 'www.sterlingbuild.co.uk', we are better on every Root Domain Metric except for the Total Links metric and this is down to a much smaller number of internal links. They are ranking better than us in Google so I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the way our site is coded / structured that means Google and OSE are not picking up our internal link network properly? We have over nine times as many external root domains linking to our site than theirs, which is surely a far more valuable metric than internal links right? Or is there an issue with our internal link structure that is confusing Google and causing us to rank lower? Many thanks for any advice, Luke

How do i fix the problem of having 2 url's splitting my rankings?
please excuse my noobness. i have a nice site, www.soundsenglish.com which I built from scratch and learned by doing. It has lots of nice content and it does ok, my rankings are woeful mostly cos of all the mistakes i made building it...i'll fix that stuff. This stuff i don't know about. from my adsense i get 2 listings www.soundsenglish.com and soundsenglish.com wierdly the second one gets consistently higher paying ads although most of the visitors come through the first but they are both the same landing page same content -as far as i can tell. when i try to find rankings, use the seo tools etc i get diferent scores, so whatever it is, it is splitting the sites - can't be a good thing. i have no idea why this happens and i have some inkling that maybe i need something to do with cannonical redirects or maybe a 301 redirect. both of which i have little idea how to do. If that isn't enough naive blundering about for you, i have a little more... it occurs to me that this prpoblem is probably happening with every page on my site, i.e. the 'juice ' is not getting credited onto that one page. this surely means cannonical redirects but even afterreading up on them idon't quite get it. or rather ido but idon;t get how to apply it to my context.

Why is OSE so infuriatingly annoying
Damn thing tells me the www.domain im researching has 599 links internal and external. I download an advanced report for the whole root domain of external links....and its come up with 64 in a csv file.....wtf is that about? The data about root domain says i have External Followed Links 408 and
Moz Pro | | xtopher66
55,736 total links...........which is BS. this site hasnt enough internal or external to shoot from the low figure up to 55,0000 By the way, im a 79 tall but ive never meaured my height.. Sounds like SEO data!0 -
How can I correct this massive duplicate content problem?
I just updated a clients website which resulted in about 6000 duplicate page content errors. The way I set up my clients new website is I created a sub folder calles blog and installed wordpress on that folder. So when you go to suncoastlaw.com your taken to an html website, but if you click on the blog link in the nav, your taken to the to blog subfolder. The problem I'm having is that the url's seem to be repeating them selves. So for example, if you type in in http://suncoastlaw.com/blog/aboutus.htm/aboutus.htm/aboutus.htm/aboutus.htm/ that somehow is a legitimate url and is being considered duplicate content of of http://suncoastlaw.com/aboutus.htm/. This repeating url only seems to be a problem when the blog/ is in the url. Any ideas as to how I can fix this?

OSE Domains & Subdomains
Is there a compelling reason that OSE treats subdomains as part of a parent domain, rather than as a separate site? Or is this just a technical limitation? I ask because it's my understanding that Google treats subdomains more like separate domains than like parts of the parent domain. OSE treating them more like folders creates some frustrating situations when researching niches that are heavily filled with blospot and wordpress.com blogs. First of all, the domain authority in these situations is not at all indicative of the strength of the site. It also makes it hard to evaluate linking root domains at a glance, since all blogspot blogs count as one domain. So to see all blogspot sites linking you have to go to the full link list -- where each site may be listed hundreds of times -- and you can't group them because they're all considered the same domain. To be sure you when researching these niches you can just throw out domain authority as a metric, and export every report to excel where you can sort things in a way to make it easier to separate sites. But if there isn't a compelling SEO reason to have OSE function this way, I'd love to see those subdomains treated as separate sites so I can have access to all the easy to use SEOmoz metrics and layouts without the extra work. And of course if there is a compelling SEO reason for subdomains to be treated as domains, I'd love to be educated! : )

Problem with Rankings and On-page Optimization
Hi SEOZ 🙂 I have a question regarding the Rankings and On-page Optimization in the seomoz Campaign Manager. I have setup a website url for examle: www.keyword.com After that created a list of all the target Keywords, that I want to reach within my Website: keyword-a, keyword-b, keyword-c and so on... Then I did a On-Page Analysis for all the urls with the specific keywords. keyword-a: www.keyword.com/keyword-a/ keyword-b: www.keyword.com/keyword-b/ keyword-c: www.keyword.com/keyword-c/ and so on... Most of the urls got the A grade. Now after the Website hast launched and got crawled, I have a problem with the Rankings and the On-page Optimization. The Rankings for my Keywords and also the Grades at the On-page Optimization are only shown for my Start/Homepage: www.keyword.com NOT for the urls that are specific for a Keyword for example: www.keyword.com/keyword-a/ Also the Grades are shown for the Keywords but again only in combination with my Start/Homepage www.keyword.com NOT for www.keyword.com/keyword-a/ What is the problem? Bye, Alex

Over 90% of anchor text tends to be brand-name on OSE link profiles. Why?
I reported this as a bug in OSE, because often I explore these links and find that the pages include both a brand-name link AND a regular keyword link, but for some reason OSE was only reporting the brand-name link... This led me to wonder how many links this occurred for, and therefore whether or not to trust the fact that the majority of the sites I ran OSE on returned at least (in most cases, more) than 90% brand-name links. I understand that brand-name links are amongst the most important to obtain, but that it's also important to get anchor text for keywords to build a varied profile. Given this apparent flaw in OSE, is it wrong - in the case of very successful sites - to take this ~90% as being anywhere near the correct percentage of brand-name links that I should be aiming for as a proportion of the total profile? Extra Credit :)... And this may help potentially help resolve the issue: does "Inbound Links" tab in OSE just report links to the Root Domain, or to that and every other page on the site?
