    The backstory: My site has a fantasy sportsbook where users can place "bets" on pretty much anything.  Each game has a unique matchup page, where the odds are displayed and any conversation about the game takes place. Example here. About 95% of the games are automatically graded, but I have to manually grade the rest.  Therefore, as soon as every game starts I check to see if any users have made a pick on it, and if not I delete it because it reduces my workload. The problem: About 15% of my search-driven traffic is queries for games that no longer exist, which makes sense because nobody bets on the super obscure games and these games are very easy to rank for.  I am currently redirecting them to my 404 page but I'm worried that all of these hits are hurting my reputation with the big G. Would it be better to noindex all of these pages at first and take the noindex away as soon as I'm positive that the game will stay?

    In our Magento store, products are arranged into categories, subcategories and so on. We typically have 3 or 4 layers of category depth. This makes it nice and easy for customers to find stuff, but it means that the end categories have massive long urls. I'd like to keep our category tree structure in place from a navigation point of view, but I feel the url structure is pushing some important stuff to the back of the shop as it were. We have something like 200 categories in total. So, assuming every individual category has an a unique name, I'd like to rewrite the urls so that: ourshop.com/car-parts/
    stays as  
    ourshop.com/car-parts/ ourshop.com/car-parts/suspension/
    becomes  
    ourshop.com/suspension/ ourshop.com/car-parts/suspension/springs
    becomes  
    ourshop.com/springs/ ourshop.com/car-parts/suspension/springs/thismake-lowering-springs
    becomes  
    ourshop.com/thismake-lowering-springs/ and so on....
    I'll need some custom magento URL rewrite  work done, but that's another story. The real question is whether you guys feel this is worthwhile? Are there any other stores with a deep categorised navigation structure, but a flat url structure? thanks, James

    Hello, I am working on a web project that breaks up its sections by utilizing hidden divs shown via javascript activated through anchor links. http://www.janandtom.com/ First question: Is this SEO suicide? I have confirmed that the content is being indexed by searching for specific text but have been led to believe that hidden div content will be afforded a lower 'importance'. One suggestion has having the text as display:block and then hiding it on page load. Will this make a difference? Second: Is there any way to have Google index the anchored content by the specific anchor text?     I have a client that has been 301’ing googlebot to the canonical page. This is because they have a cart_id and session parameters in urls. This is mainly from when googlebot comes in on a link that has these parameters in the URL, as they don’t serve these parameters up to googlebot at all once it starts to crawl the site.
    I am worried about cloaking; I wanted to know if anyone has any info on this.
    I know that Google have said that doing anything where you detect goolgebots useragent and treat them different is a problem.
    Anybody had any experience on this, I would be glad to hear.

    Hi Guys I know there is doubt as to reality of Google and the sand box.  However, we have a client site that is now 9 months old and still does not even appear under its own name within Google.  The site is very simple in a very normal market place. We have carried out some high quality white hat SEO but to no avail.  The site ranks well with the other search engines.  I am not looking for a SEO review.  In short all I would like to achieve is to get the site to rank for its own name.  The site is www.playgrounddevelopments.co.uk  As you can see nothing dramatic about that.  I cannot understand why Google will not rank the site for the keyword Playground Developments.  Should be pretty straight forward but nine months in nothing.  We have indexed and even carried out a PPC campaign on behalf of the client to prove to Google the site was real and not a spamming portal. I would love to speak with someone at Google but that avenue seems impossible.  Any tips, help, advice, ideas...... thanks pete

    One of my clients is looking to start a new company and they are thinking of SEO right from the get go. While this is great for me there are a few issues that I have never really encountered before. For instance, my client knows that she will be expanding into a different city in the future but wants to generate local traffic to start with. She will initially start with CITY-A before moving to CITY-B one year later. Which of the following would be a better solution: 1)      Have CITY-A targeted on the root domain for one year, build links and grow the site for CITY-A then create two sub domains in one year targeting CITY-A and CITY-B (ie. CITY-A.companyname.com and CITY-B.companyname.com), then make the root domain a generic company site with no mention of location (or mentions of both locations). . . 2)      Create the two sub domains now and begin with CITY-A.companyname.com and have the root domain be a general overview of the company and our services without being location specific. 3)      Create the root domain (companyname.com) and have that target CITY-A and keep it targeting the initial city, then create a sub-domain in a year to target CITY-B I keep going between these solutions and seem to have hit a mental block. What are your thoughts? Any other ideas are more that welcome! Thanks, Net66

    About 3 years ago I acquired a sitewide sidebar backlink on very good site.  Today 3 years later my site has 27,080 backlinks from the same domain with the same anchor text and I am concerned this could be doing my site more harm than good. The site is good quality well indexed PR5, some inner pages also have good PR. My dilemmas are: Should I have the link removed or leave it put? Would taking down so many links in one go do me harm? My instinct would be to remove the sitewide and just keep the homepage link but that is not an option Can anyone help? Thanks

    I have a website that lists events in Dublin, Ireland. I want to provide a comprehensive number of listings but there are not enough hours in the day to provide a detailed (or even short) unique description for every event. At the moment I have some pages with little detail other than the event title and venue. Should I try and prevent Google from crawling/indexing these pages for fear of reducing the overall ranking of the site? At the moment I only link to these pages via the RSS feed. I could remove the pages entirely from my feed, but then that mean I remove information that might be useful to people following the events feed. Here is an example page with very little content

    We have a large E-commerce site (magento based) and have submitted sitemap files for several million pages within Webmaster tools. The number of indexed pages seems to fluctuate, but currently there is less than 300,000 pages indexed out of 4 million submitted. How can we get the number of indexed pages to be higher? Changing the settings on the crawl rate and resubmitting site maps doesn't seem to have an effect on the number of pages indexed. Am I correct in assuming that most individual product pages just don't carry enough link juice to be considered important enough yet by Google to be indexed? Let me know if there are any suggestions or tips for getting more pages indexed. syGtx.png

    Hello, is there a way to allow a certain child directory in robots.txt but keep all others blocked? For instance, we've got external links pointing to /user/password/, but we're blocking everything under /user/.  And there are too many /user/somethings/ to just block every one BUT /user/password/.     Why do I get different results from SEOmoz tool bar and OpenSiteExplorer for some sites. For instance I look at one site and toolbar says it has 101 link domains, so I check it in OpenSiteExplorer and it says 2 link domains...? Am I missing something, or is it just not working properly?

    Hi, I have a client that has an address that is shared for a few different businesses in the holistic health field. My client is a chiropractor. There is an eye doctor, massage therapist and acupuncturist aslo sharing the same address. It's a subburban setting with two buildings all sharing one address. In the interest of preventing any merged listings down the road, I recently added un unofficial suite number to his website and Google places business listing. I also did this for all of his online directory listings, and for Bing and Yahoo as well. Did I do the right thing here? It seems to be having a positive impact on his local SEO as far as I can tell. Or at least there has not been any negative impact in the last 6 months Your thoughts?

If you are new and you are reading this, then you maybe do not understand that a thumbs up actually helps the person who gave their time to answer your question. There are several ways it helps, including giving feedback that the answer or the attempt to answer was actually useful, that you learned something or you appreciate the time it took to check your questions and give you feedback that you don't get in other forums, where you might be ignored for weeks or months. This is a collaborative forum and we are all here to learn something and to pass some of our knowledge to others who need it. Not every answer we give needs a thumbs up, but if you got something out of the answer, then, surely it is worth a second of your time to say "Thanks, that helped me" or "Yes, I agree with this"

    Hi! I've been trying to figure out what is the best way to solve this dilemma with duplicate content and multiple languages across domains. 1 product info page 2 same product but GREEN
    3 same product but RED
    4 same product but YELLOW **Question: ** Since pages 2,3,4 just varies slightly I use the canonical tag to indicate they are duplicates of page 1. Now I also want to indicate there are other language versions with the_ rel="alternate" hreflang="x" _element. Should I place the _rel="alternate" hreflang="x" _on the canonical page only pointing to the canonical page with "x" language. Should I place the _rel="alternate" hreflang="x" _on all pages pointing to the canonical page with the "x" language? Should I place the _rel="alternate" hreflang="x"  _on all pages and then point it to the translated page (even if it is not a canonical page) ? /Lars

    Hi guys, Our office has about 15 computers all on the same IP address and about 10 actively search on Google. Recently we have been asked to type in CAPTCHA almost every single time searching on Google and would like to know if you have any suggestions of resolving this. We do use Firefox Rank Checker to check ranking once per week (around 400 keywords) but we use Hide My Ass to hide the IP. No malware or virus detected on computers in the network. Now the question I had from this ... if I link to a specific website with rel="nofollow" and they link to me normally.     Hi SEOmozers Tried finding a solution to this all morning but can't, so just going to spell it out and hope someone can help me! Pretty simple, my client has one site www.domain.com. UK-hosted and targeting the UK market. They want to launch www.domain.us, US-hosted and targeting the US market. They don't want to set up a simple redirect because a) the .com is UK-hosted b) there's a number of regional spelling changes that need to be made However, most of the content on domain.com applies to the US market and they want to copy it onto the new website. Are there ways to get around any duplicate content issues that will arise here? Or is the only answer to simply create completely unique content for the new site? Any help much appreciated! Thanks

    Just when I thought I'd seen it all, google hits me with another nasty surprise! I have a CDN to deliver images, js and css  to visitors around the world. I have no links to static HTML pages on the site, as far as I can tell, but someone else may have - perhaps a scraper site? Google has decided the static pages they were able to access through the CDN have more value than my real pages, and they seem to be slowly replacing my pages in the index with the static pages. Anyone got an idea on how to stop that? Obviously, I have no access to the static area, because it is in the CDN, so there is no way I know of that I can have a robots file there. It could be that I have to trash the CDN and change it to only allow the image directory, and maybe set up a separate CDN subdomain for content that only contains the JS and CSS? Have you seen this problem and beat it? (Of course the next thing is Roger might look at google results and start crawling them too, LOL) P.S. The reason I am not asking this question in the google forums is that others have asked this question many times and nobody at google has bothered to answer, over the past 5 months, and nobody who did try, gave an answer that was remotely useful. So I'm not really hopeful of anyone here having a solution either, but I expect this is my best bet because you guys are always willing to try.

    Hi, Lets say you have a cleaning company, you have a services page, which covers window cleaning, carpet cleaning etc, lets say the content on this page adds up to around 750 words. Now lets say you would like to create new pages which targeted location specific keywords in your area. The easiest way would be to copy the services page and just change all the tags to the location specific term but now you have duplicate content. If I wanted to target 10 locations, does this now mean I need to generate 750 words of unique content for each page which is basically the services page rewritten? Cheers

    I only discovered SEOmoz about a week ago and my knowledge in this area has grown 500% in that time, but I'm still a newbie. I'm looking for whether I have the right general idea or not with my home page in regards to SEO.  The page is located at Line.com. The top section with the images is 100% for humans.  The next section is where the SEO comes into play.  I have 5 different services [sports monitor, free sports betting, sports betting forum, sports handicapper websites, gambling affiliate program] that I offer on 5 different inner pages.  What I'm trying to do is have my home page rank decently for my desired terms and then pass link juice to the respective pages.  My goal is to eventually have my inner pages rank higher than my home page for my desired search terms. Do I have the right general idea or am I way off?  Is this too much for the search engines with all of the links and bold text? Design criticisms are also welcome, and anybody who wants to critique the inner pages would be forever thanked.  Feel free to be as harsh as you want as long as it's constructive. Thanks!

    I have been trying to rank well for the key word "National Currency" forever and can't seem to make it into the top ten.  I would really like to have the URL NationalCurrency but it's taken and can't be bought. My url is nationalcurrencyvalues.  After reading the forums and various other SEO advice it occurred to me that National-Currency is as good or better than NationalCurrency for that keyword because it's seen as two words.  (right) So,  I grabbed that domain name.   Now,  my question...  is there some way to make use of the National-Currency domain name without building an entirely new site? I don't think I want transfer all of my content from nationalcurrencyvalues. Would there be any benefit to my nationalcurrencyvalues if I set up 303's on National-Currency?

    I have a large content site that's 8-9 yrs old, a PR4, DA of 66, and has many thousands of backlinks.  It has ranked well for it's primary keywords for quite some time. This morning I noticed rankings dropped significantly. My #2 keyword went from 1 to 150. I started trying to figure out what was up and when I signed into GWT I had the notice from Google on 2/25 that they noticed un-natural linking tactics. Hmm....weird...I dont use un-natural linking methods. So I pulled open a couple back link analyzing tools and when looking at Majestic SEO I noticed that about mid February I had a spike of about 2500-3000 links coming from roughly 350 unique domains.  Hmm..weird..We hadn't been doing any major content marketing or link building during that time or for probably a month to month and half before that. Upon analyzing some of those links it appears that a vast majority of them are from some type of blog network. Not sure which but you know the kind I'm talking about. ALN or something similar. What appears to have happened is someone pointed a bunch of spammy links at my site and this has caused Google to penalize me.  I know this isn't suppose to be possible but just recently on a forum I visit I noticed a thread where someone was able to successfully do this to his competitor who has held the number one spot for over a year.  He used the same technique of a couple hundred blog network links with varied anchor text and his competitor dropped about a hundred spots. So curious if anyone else has seen this or has any advice on my next step. I have filed a re-inclusion request and outlined what I think happened. I am also attempting to figure out which blog network it is so that I can request they remove those links but if I can't I'm not sure what I should do next.

    Our site was just crawled last night an we had a number of keywords fall 25% or so, from say # 30 to 38. What would cause such a drastic fall? We haven't taken down pages or changed changed page titles, url or content. One thing we are having trouble with is our meta description and meta keywords for each page. Drupal 7 seems to be giving us trouble and the meta information isn't showing up anymore. Would that cause the fall? Any other suggestions?

    My Crawl Diagnostics Summary says I have 5,141 errors of the 4XX (Client Error) variety.  Yet when I view the list of URLs they all resolve to valid pages. Here is an example.
    http://www.ryderfleetproducts.com/ryder/af/ryder/core/content/product/srm/key/ACO 3018/pn/Wiper-Blade-Winter-18-Each/erm/productDetail.do These pages are all dynamically created from search or browse using a database where we offer 36,000 products. Can someone help me understand why these are errors.

    Hi everyone I know what you are thinking but I am being serious. Would you use images inside H1 tags? Personally I don't see the benefit having an image included within the H1 tags but when looking at the Apple website today they actually did this. On http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/#performance they have two H1 tags within the same page. One for an image on top and one for text midway on the page. **The image tag is ** Picking up where amazing left off. **The text tag is ** **Siri. The intelligent assistant that helps you get things done. All you have to do is ask.** Having two H1 tags in on the same page does not make sense at all and is against SEO best practices but including an image in the H1 tags ? Does anyone know any benefits of doing this? Thanks in advance for all your help.

    What is the most SEO friendly shopping cart?  I have been using zen-cart for 6 years.  Seems Google doesn't like it as much as other carts.  I started a new site about 6 months ago using Magento.  When I build links to this site the terms move.  The terms are very similar.  So I would imagine the competition is the same.  I am curious if anybody has tried with different carts and found anyone to be better than the others.  Also the new site has about one tenth the amount of products but has a lot more pages indexed.

    Hi, I'm working with a site that has multiple sub domains of entirely duplicate content. So, the production level site that visitors see is (for made-up illustrative example): 123abc456.edu Then, there are sub domains which are used by different developers to work on their own changes to the production site, before those changes are pushed to production: Larry.123abc456.edu Moe.123abc456.edu Curly.123abc456.edu Google ends up indexing these duplicate sub domains, which is of course not good. If we add a canonical tag to the head section of the production page (and therefor all of the duplicate sub domains) will that cause some kind of problem... having a canonical tag on a page pointing to itself? Is it okay to have a canonical tag on a page pointing to that same page? To complete the example... In this example, where our production page is 123abc456.edu, our canonical tag on all pages (this page and therefor the duplicate subdomains) would be: Is that going to be okay and fix this without causing some new problem of a canonical tag pointing to the page it's on? Thanks!

    Our attorney wrote a dozen articles that range from 300 to 700 words on various topics of the certain law area. These articles are all placed on our FAQ page with anchored table of contents. This page does frequently come up on the first page of the google when people search for the questions discussed in these articles. 90% of these visits are not local therefore they are not potential clients. Attorney views it more like a community service then a marketing tool. However, I think there might be a problem. People read though the page and close it because usually they can find what they were looking for right there, however GA counts it as bounce because they did not browse to another page. Would large number of bounces hurt our standing with Google? Would it be better to separate the page into multiple pages for each article to make visitors browse?

    Hello All, I work on a site that has a lot of videos. The trouble is none of them are ranking. Here is an example of a page with a video on. If you click the play button you will see But none of these videos are being indexed, as you can see here. Is it because these videos are just mp4 files, rather than being embedded players (like SEOmoz use for instance)? Would embedding videos through Viddler / Wistia / Youtube etc help? Or is there some other issue at work here? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Rich
