  • Hi, we will be moving a clients’ site address from one domain to another and will of course be doing 301 redirects and notifying Google of the site address change in WMT. The problem is, that at some point in the future (say 3-6 months), the old domain will be going live with a new site as the current client does not own the domain and the owner will be wanting it back unfortunately. How will this affect the rankings and traffic of the new site (new domain) once this (old domain with new site) happens? Will the site address change be enough to keep the rankings but it will lose backlink traffic? Or will rankings go down since the 301 redirects will in essence no longer be in affect? Many thanks for your help in advance.

  • Hello, I was wondering if hosting on shared, versus VPS, versus dedicated ... matter at all in terms of the rankings of Web sites ... given that all other factors would be exactly equal. I know this is a big question with many variables, but mainly I am wondering if, for example, it is more the risk of resource usage which may take a site down if too much traffic and therefore make it un-crawlable if it happens at the moment that a bot is trying to index the site (factoring out the UX of a downed site). Any and all comments are greatly appreciated! Best regards,
    Mark

  • I'm getting good, solid growth in my Google SERPs and Google search traffic now, but I do notice that 70% of my high ranking search results are images and the CTR on those is only 3-4%. All my images are illustrative and highly relevant to my travel blog, but I guess that hardly matters unless they get CTR so people see them in context. Has anyone seen or done any good research on what makes people click through on Google Image Search results? What are the key factors? How do you optimize for click-through? Is it better to watermark your images or overlay label them to increase likelihood of click-through? Thanks, Tony FYI the travel blog in question is www.asiantraveltips.com and a relevant Google search where I rank highly is "songkran 2016 phuket".

  • Our website www.mikestaff.com (Detroit wedding services company..djs, photographers, videography) has fantastic competitive metrics, as in we beat the competition at every ranking factor, but we are still buried in the actual SERPs We are trying to rank for similar/identical keywords as our competitors in almost each of the main categories of the site: specifically detroit wedding dj...photographer...videographer..etc. We also have a Chicago office that we are trying to rank the site for with specific chicago pages. The website makes you choose right at the beginning what market you are in - Detroit or Chicago. We have A grades on all of our main keywords and the pages that we are trying to rank. But again we are buried on the second and third page of the SERPs in most of these keywords. Help - Moz community :-)Any thoughts on what we might be missing? BceI0XR

  • After doing some backlink searching on competitors, I see a great deal of competitor's backlinks are obvious linkfarms and just completely unrelated to their field. Also I see a lot of forum comments using links are showing as backlinks, upon inspecting the html element I see they're " no follow " links. Why are they showing up as backlinks with link equity then?

  • hi anyine  any issues with using Spanish, and other non English words, as domain names when trying to rank in Google uk. We launched a number of websites a while back but finding it hard to get much traction in Google uk. We are getting a reasonable number of impressions but cannot seem to get very high in the rankings. All the names are foreign words for their service. Our homeware website, for example, uses the basque word for furniture as its name. other than potential branding issues of having domains people might struggle to spell, is there any serp issues we would face with these names. thanks

The rank of my website for a particular keyword is by far lower than one of my competitors (they are in top 20 while I am not even in top 50 in google). • Hi, So right now my vanity URLs have a lot more links than my regular homepage. They 301 redirect to the homepage but I'm thinking of canonicalizing the homepage, as well as the mobile page, to the vanity URL. Currently some of my sites have a vanity URL in a SERP and some do not. This is my way of nudging google to list them all as vanity but thought I would get everyone's opinion first. Thanks!

  • I was hoping to get a bit of advice if possible. Our website has a domain authority of 25. Our blog, on a separate platform has a domain authority of 73. In essence, we were wondering if we should move all the content from our blog to our website and then set up redirects? What's stopped us so far is the fear that the links from the blog, with the higher domain authority, are having a positive effect on the website, and if we were to move the content we'd lose the value of those backlinks. So I was wondering if you could possibly advise me on the matter? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

  • A client of mine is putting together a partnership with a local university to offer a certain type of medical test through several of its clinics. They are writing up the contract now and asked me if there is anything they should ask for that would benefit us in our listings. Since we do not have an actual local footprint, my first inclination was to ask for them to help us get verified as owners of "practitioner" local listings at their business addresses (as discussed here). We would provide local numbers that would ring our call center. My thinking is that these listings and backlinks would benefit on searches similar to "medical testing in San Antonio". I have a number of concerns with this track but would love to hear from the community on why or why not this might be the way to go. Another potential option is to ask for a link from the university's website outlining the partnership. Something along the lines of "Our labs have partnered with BIZNAME to provide medical testing in San Antonio to our valued patients." I'd obviously love the EDU links, but I'm hesitant after Overstock's penalty a few years ago to try to set something like that up. I'm not sure which (if either) to ask for in the contract. I'm leaning toward the latter since it seems more in line with a long term strategy, and Google seems to change their treatment of the local listings pretty frequently. However, getting that high visibility real estate in the local listings is really appealing to me.  What does everyone think?

  • Hi all, I do hope to get some insight into this problem. I look after a webiste - http://www.crownhilldentalpractice.co.uk/ - and the age used to rank for 'dentist plymouth' in the middle of the first page of the SERPS on Google. The ranking then slowly slipped at the beginning of this year and following the Penguin update it has fallen to the bottom of page 1 and is sometimes seen on page two. Their competitors are mostly in plymouth, but there is a site whose physical location is close to my client, and yet they maange to rank more highly. I have tried to see what this domain has been doing - they have a marginally higher domain authority, but the clients domain is older. Checekc Webmaster, (no messages) re-submitted site map, built up internal links, optimised images, bilt up Google + with reviews too. They have some social signlas from facebook too. Any ideas of how to get these guys back up to above the fodl on poage one for that keyword? Kind Regards Carrie

  • Hi Our company has a Facebook page - it's pretty outdated and barely used. I want to change that, but wondered if anyone had any advice on how to start it up again? It hasn't been used for a while, so how do you start off with your first post? Or do you act like you have been there the whole time... probably not the best idea. We don't want to confuse people or look stupid with the first post. I want it to be regularly used for content, community building and demonstrating the personality of the company. Thank you 🙂

  • I published some new landing pages about a month a go which are much better quality than previous pages and on an optimised URL. The old pages never ranked and the new pages aren't ranking either although they are much better. The old pages 301 redirect to the new pages. Any quick ways I can at least get them ranking? Not expecting Page 1 overnight but to at least see the new pages on Page 5 would be great!

  • Hello Mozzers, We have incorporated Wordpress blog in our website. The blog has a fair share of what we believe is a valuable content both for the users and SEO. We have reached the point where our content is getting pushed out to pages 2, 3 and etc. 99% of the older content is still relevant and useful. However it does get less traffic from the users because it is not on the front page. I am dealing with it by showing "related posts" and get some traffic through that. I feel that the content that got pushed from the front page of the blog gets less love from search engines as well. The my permalink structure is /%postname%/ only, however when Wordpress adds page/1/ the SEO ranking appears to drop. Is it because Wordpress adds page/1/ to the address? What is a good way to optimize is? I have 15 posts showing on the front page should I increase it?

At the same time my writers publish unique articles on the site. Sure, I'm adding "Source" for each duplicate article with the link to the source. 1. It's risky?
    2. Duplicate content?
    3. Should I use Noindex/Nofollow for each duplicate article? Please share your thoughts.

  • Hi friends, I know this is a minor technical change, but we are in an extremely competitive market and I don't want to have any points against us. On our WordPress Category pages i.e. http://www.domain.com/category/tegory-title%/ I looked at the code behind the the Title of the category page, which is "Browsing: %Category Title%" The code is an h2. I look at the posts in the category archive below, and those are also h2's. The theme preview is here and you can click on Entertainment - Reviews to see exactly what I'm referring to - http://themeforest.net/item/smartmag-responsive-retina-wordpress-magazine/full_screen_preview/6652608 I changed the code for the "Browsing: %Category Title%" to h1, which I believe is more consistent and standard formatting. 1. Is this a correct technical on-page optimization? 2. Would it be beneficial to remove "Browsing"?

  • Hi, I want to pass link juice from my English website to my other languages. Does Google index language flags/links in header? Only 1 flag is visible at a time, and from what i´ve read, Google does not index content that is not visible to the user without clicks, like content behind tabs. I´m guessing language drop downs could fall under the same category as well...? Any knowledge on this... thank you for your time!

  • Hello, I was hoping someone could help me understand if there is any point to submit a domain or subdomain to Google Search Console (Webmaster Tools) and Bing Webmaster Tools if the pages (on the subdomain for example) all have nofollow/noindex tags ... or the pages are being blocked by the robots.txt file). There are some pages on a data feed onto a subdomain which I manage that have these above characteristics ... which I cannot change ... but I am wondering if it is better to simply exclude from submitting those from GWT and BWT (above) thereby eliminating generating errors or warnings ... or is it better to tell Google and Bing about them anyway then perhaps there is a chance those nofollow pages may be indexed/contextualised in some way, making it worth the effort? Many thanks!

  • Our B2B site has a lot of of long form content (e.g., transcriptions from presentations and webinars). We'd like to leverage the long tail SEO traffic driven to these pages and convert those visitors to leads. Essentially, we'd like Google to index all this lengthy, keyword-rich content AND we'd like to put up a read gate that requires users to register before viewing the full article. This is a B2B site, and the goal is to generate leads. Some considerations and questions: How much of the content to share before requiring registration? Ask too soon and it's a terrible user experience, give too much away and our business objectives are not met. Design-wise, what are good ways to do this? I notice Moz uses a "teaser" to block Mozinar content, and I've seen modals and blur bars on other sites. Any gotchas that Google doesn't like that we should be aware of? Trying to avoid anything that might seem like cloaking. Is it better to split the content across several pages (split a 10K word doc across 10 URLs and include a read gate on each) or keep to one page? Thank you!

  • Our homepage navigation uses anchor tags (?TabNumb=1#, ?TabNumb=1# etc) rather than directly linking to different pages to decrease load time (and simplify the build process I owuld imagine).  These anchor links are showing up as duplicate titles in Moz. I am pretty sure if I were to use noindex or rel tags, that could have a negative affect on my search results.  Any way to tackle this outside of a complete redesign of the structure? http://www.dedoose.com/about-us/?TabNum=2# as an example

  • I am using Genesis Framework with the New Pro child theme on my site called Learn Internet Grow and when I create long articles I like to have a menu so readers can jump to a specific section. I wonder if there is a best practice for how to create jump links quickly without having to switch between the code editor and the post editor. There are a bunch of plugins but I am wary of adding more. Maybe if someone can tell me about one they had a good experience with. Ideally, a resource that shows you how to create a custom plugin for this or a non-plugin way to alter the framework to enable easy jump linking.

  • Our website is a dating site for adults (not porn) (http://www.swingersocial.com) It’s been STUCK in the middle of page 2 for 1 ½ years. Moving up or down 2 ranking, that’s it. The way we determine our location is by entering the most common phrases used by people who search for our type of site.  We surveyed 50+ people and the phrases they most frequently entered when using Google were “swingers websites”  “swingers sites” and “free swingers sites”. In addition to our competitors ranking above us, they show “movement” in their rankings up & or down. Some even dropped to page 2 but they recovered – we are not seeing the same movement or recovery. Pages crawled on have remained virtually unchanged for months.  The last 1 ½ years we have hired SEO companies, and as a result a great deal of effort has been put into the site. We are not naïve and realize some were better than others.  We’ve invested a great deal of effort into content, key words, modifying tags, and throughout all of this we’ve seen no change.  We had a detailed audit suggesting improvements (no surprise), the report overall was positive stating “There are a few things to do to optimize the site but looking at the keywords, SwingerSocial.com should be able to rank high.” We also implemented a blog area with over 70 blog posts. Our competitors on the other hand have only two blog posts and are continually ranking higher than us.  Additionally, our competitors do not have sites on Pinterest, G+, FB, or Twitter – we have a presence on some of these. I do know that the number and quality of links are terrible.  I’m looking for a partner to help us make strategic changes to the site that will allow us to rank higher.

  • I recently started working for a company and got them to use Moz and I have found that our secure site and our live sites are creating "duplicate content" according to the Crawl Diagnostics feature. On our secure site we have rel canonical tags pointing to our live site. I'm not super familiar with rel canonical tags, but our developer says we're doing the right thing. Would love any insight you guys may have if this is actually duplicate content or not. Thanks so much!

  • Is there an advantage to using link rel=alternate (as recommended by Google) rather than noindex on pages on my mobile site (m.company.com)? The content on the mobile pages is very similar to the content on the desktop site. I see Google recommends canonical and alternate tags, but what are the benefits of using those rather than noindex?

  • Hello, I just ran about something, which looks like a minor change (at least to me, but i totaly get, that what looks like a minor change to the outsider might in fact be a big deal from the developers view) but could easily enhance productivity with the new onpage-tool. In the overview of tracked on-page reports, I think it would be a great idea, to show the number of unsolved suggestions next to the score. Additionally, I'd love to flag some unsolved suggestions on a single page as "ignored". Why should I ignore a suggestion? For example I'm working for a customer, who is using a pretty old e-Commerce System. Therefore there is no possibilty to easiely add canonical tags. Also on some pages, it is not feasible to get below the 100 links per page threshold. On Pages, that list all products of a certain brand, I naturally get the "avoid spamming" suggestion regarding the brand-name Some Pages adress Keywords with german Letters like ÄÜÖß, which cannot be found in the page URL (while Google does get that "über" and "ueber" are the same thing). So there are cases where I can't - or simply don't want - to solve the suggestion. Now it happens almost every week to me, that I see keyword ranking, lets say, at 7 with a score of something like 87. The usual instinct is to click the report to look for the last tweaks. Often then I realise, I checked this report few weeks ago and can't or won't do anything regarding the remaining suggestions. If it would have something like "3 unresolved suggestions (+ 2 ignored)" standing next to each score in the reports overview, it would be my personal usability dream come true - since the number of open suggestions is more important to me then the score. To make it even more aweseome, add a simple filter: "Only show Reports with not-ignored unresolved suggestions". Whoohooo, that would make you one happy customer! Maybe that is something, many people would enjoy to see in an update. Cheers, Christian P.S. sorry for my bad englisch - hopefully you got the idea. unbenannt-3.jpg.html

  • Howdy there!   Two schema related questions here Schema markup for local directory We have a page that lists multiple location information on a single page as a directory type listing.  Each listing has a link to another page that contains more in depth information about that location. We have seen markups using Schema Local Business markup for each location listed on the directory page.  Examples: http://www.yellowpages.com/metairie-la/gold-buyers http://yellowpages.superpages.com/listings.jsp?CS=L&MCBP=true&C=plumber%2C+dallas+tx Both of these validate using the Google testing tool, but what is strange is that the yellowpages.com example puts the URL to the profile page for a given location as the "name" in the schema for the local business, superpages.com uses the actual name of the location.  Other sites such as Yelp etc have no markup for a location at all on a directory type page. We want to stay with schema and leaning towards the superpages option.  Any opinions on the best route to go with this? Schema markup for logo and social profiles vs website name. If you read the article for schema markup for your logo and social profiles, it recommends/shows using the @type of Organization in the schema markup https://developers.google.com/structured-data/customize/social-profiles If you then click down the left column on that page to "Show your name in search results" it recommends/shows using the @type of WebSite in the schema markup. https://developers.google.com/structured-data/site-name We want to have the markup for the logo, social profiles and website name.  Do we just need to repeat the schema for the @website name in addition to what we have for @organization (two sets of markup?).  Our concern is that in both we are referencing the same home page and in one case on the page we are saying we are an organization and in another a website.  Does this matter?  Will Google be ok with the logo and social profile markup if we use the @website designation? Thanks!

  • We run a printing website www.fastprint.co.uk and have built a few decent tools such as http://www.fastprint.co.uk/adobe-shortcut-mapper/ and decent infographics such as http://www.fastprint.co.uk/blog/the-art-of-mixing-typefaces.html and had a fair few decent links from website over the course of the last 1 1/2 but we do not seem to be moving very far? If you take our site on sem rush (a decent percentage of our site traffic is through the above tools or decent blog posts so the number would be lower for E-commerce) http://www.semrush.com/uk/info/fastprint.co.uk+(by+organic)?sort=volume_desc in comparison to a few others http://www.semrush.com/uk/info/banana-print.co.uk+(by+organic)] http://www.semrush.com/uk/info/brunelone.com+(by+organic) Especially this site http://www.semrush.com/uk/info/instantprint.co.uk+(by+organic) I just don't get what we are doing wrong?

  • I read all the time about how directories have very little weight in SEO anymore, but in my field, a lot of our competitors are propped up by paying for "profiles" aka links from places like martindale-hubbard, superlawyers, findlaw, nolo, Avvo, etc (which are essentially directories IMO) yet all those sites have very high DAs of 80 and above. So, are links from these sites worth it? I know that's a vague questions, but if Moz's algo seems to rank them so highly, I'm guessing that's reasonably close to what google thinks as well...maybe? Thanks for any insight, Ruben
