  • sorry if this has been asked/been written about previously, I had a search but couldn't find anything. I am using the keyword difficulty tool to narrow down on some keywords and whilst the % score for each keyword is being displayed, the Google Adwords data is blank. It just shows the animation as if it was pulling the data but after some ten mins or so not data is pulled, just the animation still running. Is there a problem with the tool or does the problem lay at my end? Thanks, Carl

  • Hi, We are currently redesigning our gaming website (www.totallygn.com) and one of our main goals is to get listed by Google News in future. Looking at the Google News URL requirements "The URL for each article must contain a unique number consisting of at least three digits." How does the above affect SEO structure?  I was planning on using a format such as www.totallygn.com/xbox-360/360-reviews/fifa-12-review how would this compare to something like? www.totallygn.com/xbox-360/360-reviews/fifa-12-review234 Thanks in advance for your help

  • I have taken over the SEO for www.domain.net. The way i've inherited the setup is that www.domain.net is 301 redirected to  www.domain.net/index.aspx Looking at top pages and linking root domains in Opensiteexplorer I can see that www.domain.net/index.aspx has 1,006 linking root domains www.domain.net has 806 linking root domains. I assume that www.domain.net is passing the value of it's 806 domain links to www.domain.net/index.aspx via the 301 redirect and because of this would expect www.domain.net/index.aspx to be the strongest page on the site and be the url that ranks in the listings for many relevant searches. It appears however that www.domain.net is what is shown in listings and not www.domain.net/index.aspx ?? Can anyone explain why this might be?? If I do a site: search in Google then www.domain.net is indexed and not www.domain.net/index.aspx ??

  • I am working with a ecommerce site that is having major issues with their load speed. The ttfb is...wait for it...7911 ms. I am not even sure where to start with this issue. If you have any recommendations, it would be appreciated. Is it the clients servers that are slow? They have went through multiple redesigns and have some code that could probably be deleted but I don't think it would make it that slow.

  • We have had a quality website for 12 years now, and it seems no matter how many more links we get and how much new content we add daily, we have stayed at PR3 for the past 10 years or so. Our SEOMoz domain authority is 52. We have over 950,000 pages linking to us from 829 unique root domains. Is this in line with PR3 or should we be approaching PR4 soon? We do daily blog posts with all unique, fresh quality content that has not been published elsewhere. We try to do everything with 'white hat' methods, and we are constantly trying to provide genuine content and high quality products, and customer service. How can we improve our PR and how important is PR today?

  • Sorry if this has been discussed couldn't find a post about it. Was wondering the potential link value of a rotating banner link. Situation 1: A site that wants $50/CPM.  Those impressions are random throughout the month and can be on any page within the site. Situation 2: A sidebar banner ad that rotates with other banners. Will these links be recognized and is there link value? Thanks

  • Best to illustrate with an example: the term "do girls like chest hair?" has a volume of 210 for exact match, 390 for broad. The term "do girls like hairy guys?" on the other hand, has an exact match volume of 73, but a BROAD match of 8,100. Assuming either is a suitable title for a piece of content and all other things being equal, which page title should I use? As a sort of follow-on, when should one care for broad over exact match?

  • Hi all, hope you can help. the Magento ecommerce system I'm working with autogenerates sitemap.xml - it's well formed with priority and frequency parameters. However, it has generated lots of URLs that are pointing to broken pages returning fatal erros, duplicate URLs (not canonicals), 404s etc I'm thinking of hand creating sitemap.xml - the site has around 50 main pages including products and categories, and I can get the main page URLs listed by screaming frog or xenu. Then I'll have to get into the hand editing the crud pages with noindex, and useful duplicates with canonicals. Is this the way to go or is there another solution thanks in advance for any advice

  • Hello SEOMozzers, As I embark on yet another client's link campaign I ask myself where best to spend resources(time and money) on link building. Typically I provide a mix of blogroll links, article syndication contextual links, social media posting and high PR one way links. I would like to know if anyone here finds one form of link to carry weight over the rest. I have my suspicion and my own theory on it but I would like to know what the moz concensus is.

  • I'm channeling 1000's of links through another url with a 301 redirect.  I've thought this through and can't see any downside to doing this, but I want to get your opinion. Can you see any downside to doing this? With regards to passing anchor text, PR, PA, etc? Since this is done with sites all the time when they change urls, I can't see Google being able to penalize me for this....can you? What do you think?

  • I hope this isn't too basic of a question, but I am confused about something. If you use the Keyword Research tool and type in "Stained Concrete Flooring", the 3rd result (stainedconcrete.org) has the lowest numbers of any of the sites in the top 8-10... Is it because they have a large amount of traffic? or is there some other factor that I am missing?

  • I was going through our site earlier w/ the mozBar (still learning the tools, new here) and saw the attached image. There were far more links to the subdomain (#s on the left) than the root domain (#s on right). This is strange to me, because we are not using any subdomains. All links point to either our root domain or subfolders off our root domain. Is this hurting our ranking for the root domain? Not sure what's up with this. Zz9j0.jpg

  • Is Google webmaster Tools data completely inaccurate, or am I just missing something? I noticed a recent surge in 404 errors detected 3 days ago (3/6/11) from pages that have not existed since November 2011. They are links to tag and author archives from pages initially indexed in August 2011. We switched to a new site in December 2011 and created 301 redirects from categories that no longer exist, to new categories. I am a little perplexed since the Google sitemap test shows no 404 errors, neither does SEO MOZ Crawl test, yet under GWT site diagnostics, these errors, all 125 of them, just showed up. Any thought/insights? We've worked hard to ensure a smooth site migration and now we are concerned. -Jason

  • I added new keywords to my campaign. They do appear in my ranking report. But I am not getting any ranking data on the new keywords. It looks like they are yet to be crawled. For my initial set of keywords, i see the specific rankings in each search engine and for some it says "not in the top 50." For the new ones all I see are zeros. Will the ranking data eventually appear?

  • Has anyone else seen rankings bouncing all over the place since the end of Feb? A client's site is for the term hcg which I know is controversial but we were in 3rd or 4th for the past couple of months until this update. Now for the term "hcg" the rankings are bouncing from the twenties to over 100 multiple times a day. I check them throughout the day with non personalized search, rank checker, etc to just try and keep updated. I have never seen rankings bounce around so much after an update and am wondering if this update is somehow effecting these more controversial search terms. Since The end of Feb our traffic has almost dropped in half due to the drop in just the "hcg" term ranking We have been cleaning up the site, updating lower quality content, blogging frequently and trying to build better links for the past couple months of working on the site. The problem is there have been a few other previous SEO companies that worked on the site and I don't know how much black hat tactics were used. Any insight or suggestions on this would be appreciated, we are all scrambling to try and recover from this.

  • Hello, I checked out link profile and noticed that we have 169 linking root domains with 501 links containing the same KW anchor text - all pointing to our homepage. I found out that it's actually a friend of the owner who is getting the links as a favor. All links were in a short time, and it's making our link profile look unnatural. The linking root domains look like... www. iraqculturalattache-prague .org/ I did notice a positive increase in rankings for the KW; however, i'm sure that this will be short lived, as Google will pick up on the unnatural link profile. Should i ask that he remove the links? Or just leave them? I don't want out website to be penalized. Thanks!

  • What's your opinion on analytics tools? Specifically Omniture vs Google Analytics. Is Omniture really that much more powerful than GA? Have you used GA Premium, the enterprise package? My main question - Can GA (free or premium) do everything that Omniture can? If GA Premium and Omniture were the same price, which would you choose? Is one harder to implement, pull reports, tweak, ect? Thanks in advance.

  • We operate in a few countries and so have our .com website redirect to the country the person is from. I was wondering how the link juice worked in this case, does it simply stop at .com, or does it get split evenly over the sites it's redirecting to. We have just bought the .org site as well, I am to believe that link juice from a .org to a .org is better than from a .org to a .com. We have redirected the .org to the .com which then goes the the relevant country's site. An example of link juice would be... Say an Australian organisation with a .org site links to our .org site, the link juice then goes from our .org site links to our .com site, and this then geo links back through to our .com.au site. Would it be a lot better to link directly from .org to our .com.au site in this instance, or for the sake of all the sites, would the current method work okay? Cheers.

  • Just reviewed a blog integrated with my website, and have noticed duplicate content - the blog homepage includes blogpost summaries (not a major issue as now set up so only put in opening paragraphy then anchor text to full blog post). Then that's a full blog blog post if you click for more - then that's carbon copied over in the archive. So one near exact duplicate. Is this something worth taking action on with nocrawl tags, etc., on archive duplicates of blog posts, or shouldn't I be to hung-up on this? I'm a scientist by training, so tend to go further and further once I get going...

  • Hi people, I keep on reading and reading , but I won't get it... 😉 I mean this page: http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=189077&topic=2370587&ctx=topic On the bottom of the page they say: Step 2: Use rel="alternate" hreflang="x" Update the HTML of each URL in the set by adding a set of rel="alternate" hreflang="x" link elements. Include a rel="alternate" hreflang="x" link for every URL in the set, like this: This markup tells Google's algorithm to consider all of these pages as alternate versions of each other. OK! Each URL needs this markup. BUT: Do i need it exactly as written above, or do I have to put in the complete URL of the site, like: The next question is, what happens exactly in the SERPS when I do it like this (an also with Step1 that I haven't copied here)? Google will display the "canonical"-version of the page, but wehen a user from US clicks he will get on http://en-us.example.com/**page.htm **??? I tried to find other sites which use this method, but I haven't found one. Can someone give me an example.website??? Thank you, thank you very much! André

  • I work with an affiliate site which has quite messy link structure.
The issue is that their affiliate links are www.example.com/product, which are redirected to the affiliates landing page and which are internally "no followed" The review pages are www.example.com/product/review The site is one of authority sites in their market; still, there is ranking issues with review pages, even sometimes with crawling. I have been very bothered by this and my new theory is that it is because this folder /product is nofollowed, it also affects /product/review Changing it would be insane amount of work and I would have to be sure that it is really the cause of issues, so I would really appreciate your thoughts/experience on this issue.
    Thanks!

  • Hi guys, I am having a little trouble with one of my sites. I am trying to rank for a particular keyword, which is the same as my domain name. I have the keyword.com and my competitor has the keyword.co.uk Please see the screenshot below to show our back link comparisions. I don't understand how the mozrank and moz trust are calculated as I am getting beat here. They rank first in Google UK and I rank 10th. Both of our sites are well seo'd by professional companies so I am baffled how, with this profile and a diverse set of anchor text links, I am getting beat. I would really appreciate any help and advice on this guys... Thank you backlinkcomparison.jpg

  • Hi All, We are in the process of adding a Google Plus button to our site (to the header, sitewide) - at http://www.jewelleryoutlet.com.au/ My question is, should the button have behavioural characteristics that apply to the whole site, or only for that page that it is clicked on. Consider these scenarios: A customer clicks on the G+ button from the homepage - they then 'like' that page (our homepage, i.e. our site) A customer clicks on the G+ button from a category page - e.g. http://www.jewelleryoutlet.com.au/cheap-necklaces-s/1818.htm. Because the button is in the header and sitewide, should the customer be 'liking' http://www.jewelleryoutlet.com.au/ or http://www.jewelleryoutlet.com.au/cheap-necklaces-s/1818.htm? We are also adding a Google + button to the item template, e.g. on http://www.jewelleryoutlet.com.au/product-p/jn1003.htmsomewhere above the Add to Cart button. When they press the button in this instance, they are 'liking' only that page (which is how I would want the functionality to work). So my question is to do with point 2 above. Much like a Facebook 'like/fan count' type button that exists in the header of many sites, should the G+ button function the same way? E.g. if we have a count of 10 in the header on the homepage, then there is also a count of 10 sitewide? Or should this reset for every subsequent page that a customer lands on, and by pressing the G+ button on that page, they are 'liking' only that page. Which is better for SEO? Several different +1's to different pages (e.g. from the necklaces, bracelets and earrings category pages for a more natural structure) or several +1's all pointing to the homepage? Any help or suggestions regarding G+ button or the service in general would be much appreciated. Thanks

  • Hi, I've been struggling to get followers on Google Plus and Twitter, and recently stumbled upon twiends.com. It offers an easy service that allows you to get twitter followers very quickly.  Is this considered black hating?  Even if Google doesn't consider the followers as valid, am I likely to be punished if using their service?  Even if it doesn't help rankings, it is nice to have lots of followers so that they will see my tweets which has the potential to drive more traffic to my site, and give awareness to my business. What are your thoughts?

  • I was looking through some of the directories in the seomoz directory list and a lot of them are paid directories.  What should i be looking for to decide if these directories are worth paying for a link?  obviously if the page my link is listed on is in fact indexed by google. What about the following questions: 1.  what about page rank of the page that it's on?  Does that matter? i've heard that one page rank 5 link carries the weight of hundreds of page rank zero links. Is this true? 2. What does it mean if the page rank is unranked? Is it worth paying for a link if the page is old and is unranked? 3.  i read in an SEO forum that there are many other things i should look at in a directory besides page rank. Obviously traffic is one but what about other not so obvious things? 4.  How many directory links at one time is too many? how many is too many over a long period of time? THanks in advance for your help Mozzers! Ron10

Our Errors and Warnings summary have been reduced, but our Notices for Rel Canonical have skyrocketed from 300 to over 5,500. • New to SEOmoz, loving it so far. I promote content on my site a lot and am diligent about using UTM tags to track conversions & attribute data properly. I was reading earlier about the use of link rel=canonical in the case of duplicate page content and can't find a conclusive answer whether or not I need to add the canonical tag to these pages. Do I need the canonical tag in this case? If so, can the canonical tag live in the HEAD section of the original / base page itself as well as any other URLs that call that content (that have UTM tags, etc)? Thank you.
