Paid Directories
-
As we all know paid links can harm your SEO efforts because Google doesn't like these type of links.
I was wondering, if paid links are bad, why does SEOmoz includes so many paid directories in the SEO Web Directory list???

Very helpful Ryan, thank you. Was just on botw.org and had Paul's exact question.

The short answer...there is a very distinct difference between directories which charge you for a listing and those which charge you for a site review.
If you are charged for a listing it is simply advertising. You pay a fee, you get your link, and that is a violation of Google's policy. The directory will still do it, but Google will basically nofollow the link internally so no PR flows through it.
Sites like Yahoo directory and BOTW.org charge for a site REVIEW. There are several key components:
1. The review fee is charged regardless of whether the site is actually listed or not.
2. A percentage of sites must not pass the review. If everyone passes, it is considered a fraudulent process.
3. No refunds. The site cannot offer a refund to those who don't get in otherwise the charge was not really for the review.
4. Reasonable quality standards must be in place.
A more detailed response can be seen here: http://www.seomoz.org/q/current-thoughts-on-directories
The directories in the SEOmoz list were likely accurate at the time the list was last updated, but it may not be perfect. There are likely directories in that list which may violates Google's terms, and other directories not listed which comply with Google's terms. The list should be used as a guide, not a bible.

Question, Directory Listing Text Best Practices
I have been doing some reading on directory link anchor text and it appears the best practice for 2018 and beyond would be to build your brand. For Example Sue's Shoes and her website is shoesbysue.com Directory Anchor Text As Follows shoesbysue.com

Spammy Directories Using Title Meta-Tag For Link
I've been noticing a growing amount of spammy directories using my title Meta-Tag to create a link back to my site. Since my title uses competitive keywords, these external links on spammy directories look over optimized and I fear an algo penalty might get triggered. Should I be concerned and what can I do?

Niche directories white hat?
Hello, I only submit to general directories that are extremely strong - DMOZ, Best of the Web, Yahoo Directory. But I do submit to all fairly strong, fairly high quality niche directories that any competitor is listed under. Is this completely white hat and useful now and in the future? I don't want to be penalized. I do try to get a variety of links as well as the niche directories. Thanks!

Can someone at the mozplex please update that antiquated directory listing you offer? Most of them are pay to play, reciprocal, or just plain dont exist anymore. Thanks
outdated site directory found here:http://www.seomoz.org/dp/seo-directory not that directories are amazingly useful anymore, but with all the updates and vitriol thrown there way an update is in order. Its one of those "layup" link building tools but in its current state its less of perk and more of a boon. Thanks

Using MOZ Keyword Rankings with Google Analytics in Excel to track paid keywords
Hi, I sorted my keywords in GA from highest incoming traffic to lowest, exported it and then imported these 280 or something keywords into SEO Moz. The problem is, it appears that SEO Moz Keyword Rankings tool pulls traffic data (in the traffic column) only for NON-PAID traffic ... So what I'm seeing is that keywords that brings A LOT of traffic to my site (because of AdWords) sometimes have 0 of traffic in SEO Moz, because I'm on page 3 of SERP and I literally got no non-paid traffic that week. The thing is: I want to improve my rankings for keywords that I'm already performing well, even if they are paid keywords, because they already bring me a lot of traffic to my website. The way this is working is not helping me out, because when I sort by the traffic column very important keywords end up in the last place for me. Questions: Whey does SEO Moz pull traffic data from non-paid keywords only ? Shouldn't be at least an option for this or I'm missing something here ? While they don't change it, any Excel Gurus could help me how to export SEO Moz ranking data, import it on Excel and MERGE a new "paid traffic" column that I export from Google Analytics ? How to assing each keyword line the paid traffic value I'm getting from GA ? Thanks ! Felipe
