Would moving a large part of our website onto a separate website be SEO suicide?
-
Hello,
Our website currently has what I would call educational and sales pages - which sells our services and also a techy section for the developer community.
The developer pages on the website have some of the highest authority pages that we have and equates for about 50% of the content.
It has been proposed to move the developer pages onto their own domain - away from the main website.
Now, would this crush a lot of the SEO benefit that we have on our main site?
Does anyone know of a workable solution that would help retain the SEO.
Would linking to our main site from the developer site help?
It would be great to hear what people think,
Thanks,
-
This is an important decision and one that should not be rushed. The most important question is the one which Irving asks, why exactly is this change being considered? More specifically, what is the problem you are trying to solve or the benefit you wish to gain by making this change?
The response to the above question will help us better respond to your need. Generally speaking, the reason to keep the site together is the PR from all your pages work together to raise the Domain Authority. By splitting your content into two sites you will have two weaker sites rather then one stronger site. A few other disadvantages:
-
you may have additional expenses for SSL, trust badges and other software which is domain licensed
-
you will have the work of maintaining two sites rather then one
-
you will have software configuration and work such as maintaining cookies or information / logins between sites
The primary reason for separating the content to another site is they cover unrelated topics. If you had one company with two unrelated product lines such as vitamins and computer hardware, you would likely want to serve the content on two separate websites.

Why do they want to do this, what is the reason.
"The developer pages on the website have some of the highest authority pages that we have and equates for about 50% of the content."
This alone is reason enough to not mess with it, because it's passing PR to the rest of the site. If you get rid of that section of the site you make the entire site weaker. Less PR and less content.
Where is the money made, on the main site I assume? How are the rankings for the main site? The developer site may be passing the juice needed to have the main site ranked well and you would be taking that away from the main site if you 301 all of that PR to a subdomain.

I would transfere it into a subdomain, i have seen no evidence that subdimains do not work as a subfolder as far as SEO goes. You can then host on 2 servers.

http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/subdomains-and-subdirectories/I would also 301 subfolder to subdomain.domain.com.

Moving a subdomain to subfolder with CNAME
Hi all, We have our docs in a subdomain on GitHub and looking to move it into a subfolder. Github offers the ability to redirect via CNAME https://gitbookio.gitbooks.io/documentation/platform/domains.html I am getting conflicting information on if this will work or cause duplicate content and hurt our SEO.

Is there any SEO benefit to pulling a picture from another website and linking to it from a blog?
For example, if blog.mountainmedia.com were to link a product picture directly to mountainmedia.com. Would this be considered a high quality backlink?

Website is not indexed in Google
Hi Guys, I have a problem with a website from a customer. His website is not indexed in Google (except for the homepage). I could not find anything that can possibly be the cause. I already checked the robots.txt, sitemap, and plugins on the website. In the HTML code i also couldn't find anything which makes indexing harder than usual. This is the website i am talking about: http://www.xxxx.nl/ (Dutch) The only thing that i am guessing now is the Google sandbox, but even that is quite unlikely. I hope you guys discover something i could not find! Thanks in advance 🙂

Duplicate Content on SEO Pages
I'm trying to create a bunch of content pages, and I want to know if the shortcut I took is going to penalize me for duplicate content. Some background: we are an airport ground transportation search engine(www.mozio.com), and we constructed several airport transportation pages with the providers in a particular area listed. However, the problem is, sometimes in a certain region multiple of the same providers serve the same places. For instance, NYAS serves both JFK and LGA, and obviously SuperShuttle serves ~200 airports. So this means for every airport's page, they have the super shuttle box. All the provider info is stored in a database with tags for the airports they serve, and then we dynamically create the page. A good example follows: http://www.mozio.com/lga_airport_transportation/ http://www.mozio.com/jfk_airport_transportation/ http://www.mozio.com/ewr_airport_transportation/ All 3 of those pages have a lot in common. Now, I'm not sure, but they started out working decently, but as I added more and more pages the efficacy of them went down on the whole. Is what I've done qualify as "duplicate content", and would I be better off getting rid of some of the pages or somehow consolidating the info into a master page? Thanks!

How To SEO Mobile Pages?
hello, I have finally put my first foot on the path of trying to learn and understand mobile SEO. I have a few questions regarding mobile SEO and how it works, so please help me out. I use wordpress for my site, and there is a nifty plugin called WP touch http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wptouch/ What it basically does is, it converts your desktop version into a mobile friendly version. I wanted to know that if it does that, does this mean whatever SEO i do for my regular web site gets accomplished for my moible version as well? Another simple question is, if i search for the same term on my mobile phone then on my desktop how different will the SERs be? thanks moz peeps

SEO Tomfoolery
Oh Hai, I recently changed the permalink structure on my Wordpress based site, southwestbreaks.co.uk from the standard ?p=123 to a more SEO chummy /%postname%/. As a result, my site has completely dropped off the board for all my previously well ranked search phrases. Having since gotten into SEOmoz a bit more, I can see there are WP plugins available that apparently would've done this a lot more smoothly. I'd be most grateful if someone could explain if this drop off is just temporary, or have I somehow entered Google's shun book? The site has been like this for about 48 hours. Thanks, Tim

Adding Wordpress On Separate Server w/ subdomain = SEO Issues?
I have a client that wants to setup wordpress for their business site. However, they are really concerned about the load time a wordpress install creates on their site in the root. So, they want to setup wordpress with a sub-domain on a separate server. For example: abc.domain.com As far as SEO is concerned with the main site, what are the advantages and disadvantages for using a separate server w/ subdomain?
