Is a canonical to itself a link juice leak
-
Duane Forrester from Bing said that you should not have a canonical pointing back to the same page as it confuses Bingbot,
“A lot of websites have rel=canonicals in place as placeholders within their page code. Its best to leave them blank rather than point them at themselves. Pointing a rel=canonical at the page it is installed in essentially tells us “this page is a copy of itself. Please pass any value from itself to itself.” No need for that.”He also stated that a canonical is much like a 301 except that it does not physically move the user to the canonical page. This leads me to think that having such a tag may leak link juice. “Please pass any value from itself to itself”
Google has stated that GoogleBot can handle such a tag, but this still does not mean that it is not leaking link juice. -
I am a VB man, my algorithm
if url.location.equals(url.relCanonical) then
leakJuice = 0.15
end if
I say this because of what Duane Forrester said that it assigns its value to itself, all hops leak juice or link juice or it would flow in internal loops, there has to be some decay,
From what he is saying i get the idea it is a link to itself, and would leak.
If you use the Bing SEO Toolkit, it shows you the inlinks, i noticed that there was a link with no link text, i found that this was the canonical tag.
it could be that it assignes value to itself again?
I have removed them from one of my sites and i will see if a get some movement, once i get these ideas in my head i have to find out

I'd say: if url.location==url.relCanonical { leakJuice =0; }
That would be my algorithm for this situation. I don't see any reason why SE's would "punish" you for somethng that could be a mistake. If you rel canonical to a url that is in no way associated to where the tag is placed, I would use the same algorithm.
If the the tag is pointing to a copy of the page somehwere else on that domain I would say: give a minimum link juice leak. If the url is pointing to a different root domain, I would add a little bit more leaking to the algorithm...

Confused About Potential Spammy Inbound Link
I unsure how my page got backlinked on this "passive DNS" website: http://pdns.daloo.de/search.php?alike=0&q=66.96.162.137 This looks to be my only inbound link, so I am worried this is negatively affecting my site ranking. Is this 56% spam score link negatively affecting my website? If so, any suggestions? Any feedback or insight would be greatly appreciated as I am very ignorant to what this person's webpage is about and why my page was linked.. Sincerely, Hayden My website: https://cashflo.org/

Hi Guys I was just wondering what will be the best way to hide a rel=canonical on the server side, my sites rankings got switched exactly with my competitor and the problem is we use the same web designer/marketing people. so they have full access to both websites just found it weird for the rankings to switch so quickly.

Do old links from my own unrelated subject websites improve or hinder my rankings?
Several years ago I placed links on two of my other websites I own and control one my old company about CCTV installation and the other one is the official website for actor Sir Roger Moore. The links are going to my holiday cottage letting website http://www.endeavourcottage.co.uk/ and at the time I wanted to improve my rankings with these links which are still there. The vast majority of my other inbound links are natural and are on other people's websites with some diversity regarding the anchor text. So my question is the old links on these unrelated subject websites which are also stored on the same web hosting company causing a problem and would it be beneficial to remove them to leave them in place? Also several years ago I set up two other websites at the same hosting company also promoting holiday cottages in the same place thinking I might have more bites of the cherry, but they've produced very little traffic and are not ranked at all well, but they do links to my main letting website, could these because in a problem? My domain authority seems to be equal to some of the companies which are higher placed for the short tail keywords on page 1 of Google and they have less inbound links, although they are usually bigger companies and I know many things which influence rankings. I am trying strategies to improve the rankings, which have dropped to a small degree over recent months.

How Google could quickly fix the whole Links problem...
A Thursday morning brainstorm that hopefully an important Google manager will see... Google could quickly end all the problems of link buying, spammy links, and negative SEO with one easy step: Only count the 100 best follow links to any domain. Ignore all the nofollows and everything beyond the 100 best. They can choose what "best" means. Suddenly links would be all about quality. Quantity would not matter. Fiverr links, comment links, and all the other mass-produced spam links would literally be ignored. Unless that's all a domain had, and then they would surely be stomped by any domain with 100 decent natural links. Would it be an improvement over today's situation?

How do I predict quality of inbound link before using Disavow links tool?
I am working on Ecommerce website and getting issues with bad inbound links. I am quite excited to use Disavow links tools for clean up bad inbound links and sustain my performance on Google. We have 1,70,000+ inbound links from 1000+ unique root domains. But, I have found maximum root domains with low quality content and structure. Honestly, I don't want to capture inbound links from such websites who are not active with website and publishing. I am quite excited to use Disavow links tool. But, How do I predict quality of inbound links or root domains before using it? Is there any specific criteria to grade quality of inbound links?

How to go about removing bad/irrelevent links?
We have been made aware of a series of irrelevant links on some rather dodgy sites. http://www.designerdogstop.com/level-static/http://www.bestfirepits.net/some-of-the-best-vacations-for-families/2010/05/05/ http://whatcigarsdoismoke.com/cigar-lighters/cigarette-cigar-2/ http://dollfuss.org/build-bear-hawaii/ Absolute rubbish im sure you will agree. These links must surely be causing our link profile some damage. They are currently wordpress sites with no means of contacting the authors. What ways and means are there of removing these negative pages and links? Cheers all, any help appreciated.
