Robots.txt usage

Hey Guys,
I am about make an important improvement to our site's robots.txt
we have large number of properties on our site and we have different views for them. List, gallery and map view. By default list view shows up and user can navigate through gallery view.
We donot want gallery pages to get indexed and want to save our crawl budget for more important pages.
this is one example of our site:
http://www.holiday-rentals.co.uk/France/r31.htm
When you click on "gallery view" URL of this site will remain same in your address bar: but when you mouse over the "gallery view" tab it will show you URL with parameter "view=g". there are number of parameters: "view=g, view=l and view=m".
http://www.holiday-rentals.co.uk/France/r31.htm?view=l
http://www.holiday-rentals.co.uk/France/r31.htm?view=g
http://www.holiday-rentals.co.uk/France/r31.htm?view=m
Now my question is:
I If restrict bots by adding "Disallow: ?view=" in our robots.txt will it effect the list view too?
Will be very thankful if yo look into this for us.
Many thanks
Hassan
I will test this on some other site within our network too before putting it to important one's. to measure the impact but will be waiting for your recommendations. Thanks

Others are right by the way canonical may be better, but if you insist on robots restriction you should add two schemas to each parameter:
disallow:?view=m disallow:?view=m*
so that you block the urls that contain the parameter at the end and block the ones that have it in the middle as well.

I had a similar issue with my website: there were many ways of sorting a likst of items (date, title, etc) which ended up causing duplicate content, we solved the issue a couple of days ago by restricting the "sorted" pages using the robots.txt file. HOWEVER, this morning i found this text in the Google Webmaster Tools support section:
Google no longer recommends blocking crawler access to duplicate content on your website, whether with a robots.txt file or other methods. If search engines can't crawl pages with duplicate content, they can't automatically detect that these URLs point to the same content and will therefore effectively have to treat them as separate, unique pages. A better solution is to allow search engines to crawl these URLs, but mark them as duplicates by using the
rel="canonical"
link element, the URL parameter handling tool, or 301 redirects. In cases where duplicate content leads to us crawling too much of your website, you can also adjust the crawl rate setting in Webmaster Tools.source:
http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=66359I havent seen any negative effect on my site (yet), but I would agree with SuperlativB in the sense that YOU might be better off using "canonical" tags on these links

For these paratmeters are not at the very end os the url you should add * after the letter of the parameter as well in the restriction
you got my point, thanks for looking into this. Since our search page load with list view by default and it is not in URL but still v=l represents the list view.
I want to disallow both parameters "view=g, view=m" in any URL from bots.
If these parameters are sometimes in between and some time at the end of URL what will be the work around for for both cases, you suggest?
Thanks for looking into this...

You can do the restriction you want but if i get it right m stands for map view g stands for gallery view and l stands for list view. So if you want list view to be indexed and map and gallery view not to be indexed you should add two lines of distriction:
disallow:?view=m disallow:?view=g
if these paratmeters are not at the very end os the url you should add * after the letter of the parameter as well in the restriction

Sounds like this is something canonical could solve for you. If you disallow ?view=* you would disallow all "?view" on your homepage, if you are unsure you should go for exact match rather that all.

Robots txt. in page with 301 redirect
We currently have a a series of help pages that we would like to disallow from our robots txt. The thing is that these help pages are located in our old website, which now has a 301 redirect to current site. Which is the proper way to go around? 1- Add the pages we want to disallow to the robots.txt of the new website? 2- Break the redirect momentarily and add the pages to the robots.txt of the old one? Thanks

Will a robots.txt disallow apply to a 301ed URL?
Hi there, I have a robots.txt query which I haven't tried before and as we're nearing a big time for sales, I'm hesitant to just roll out to live! Say for example, in my robots.txt I disallow the URL 'example1.html'. In reality, 'example1.html' 301s/302s to 'example2.html'. Would the robots.txt directive also apply to 'example2.html' (disallow) or as it's a separate URL, would the directive be ignored as it's not valid? I have a feeling that as it's a separate URL, the robots disallow directive won't apply. However, just thought I'd sense-check with the community.

Should I block Map pages with robots.txt?
Hello, I have a website that was started in 1999. On the website I have map pages for each of the offices listed on my site, for which there are about 120. Each of the 120 maps is in a whole separate html page. There is no content in the page other than the map. I know all of the offices love having the map pages so I don't want to remove the pages. So, my question is would these pages with no real content be hurting the rankings of the other pages on our site? Therefore, should I block the pages with my robots.txt? Would I also have to remove these pages (in webmaster tools?) from Google for blocking by robots.txt to really work? I appreciate your feedback, thanks!

What can I do if Google Webmaster Tools doesn't recognize the robots.txt file?
I'm working on a recently hacked site for a client and and in trying to identify how exactly the hack is running I need to use the fetch as Google bot feature in GWT. I'd love to use this but it thinks the robots.txt is blocking it's acces but the only thing in the robots.txt file is a link to the sitemap. Unde the Blocked URLs section of the GWT it shows that the robots.txt was last downloaded yesterday but it's incorrect information. Is there a way to force Google to look again?

Do you get credit for an external link that points to a page that's being blocked by robots.txt
Hi folks, No one, including me seems to actually know what happens!? To repeat: If site A links to /home.html on site B and site B blocks /home.html in Robots.txt, does site B get credit for that link? Does the link pass PageRank? Will Google still crawl through it? Does the domain get some juice, but not the page? I know there's other ways of doing this properly, but it is interesting no?

Robots.txt for subdomain
Hi there Mozzers! I have a subdomain with duplicate content and I'd like to remove these pages from the mighty Google index. The problem is: the website is build in Drupal and this subdomain does not have it's own robots.txt. So I want to ask you how to disallow and noindex this subdomain. Is it possible to add this to the root robots.txt: User-agent: *
Technical SEO | | Partouter
Disallow: /subdomain.root.nl/ User-agent: Googlebot
Noindex: /subdomain.root.nl/ Thank you in advance! Partouter0 -
SeoMoz robot is not able to crawl my website.
Hi, SeoMoz robot crawls only two web pages of my website. I contacts seomoz team and they told me that the problem is because of Javascript use. What is the solution to this? Should I contact my webdesign company and ask them to remove Javascript code?
