Non primary domain ranking higher in searches
-
Hey Guys,
Hopefully I can explain this so that you can understand, let me know if you need me to clarify any particular points.
I have a primary domain for my website, however someone has also pointed their domain at my server that has nothing to do with us or our website.
Typing a keyword in a search engine will list our website as this has been crawled but it's listing the domain as their domain and not our primary.
Is this because their domain has greater value then our primary?
What's the best course of action to resolve the issue?
The reason I ask is because the domain could potentially have a negative effect on business.
If I setup hosting for this second domain and setup a redirect on it, all the traffic that is trying to reach us via respective search terms are then directed away from our site.
I have been in contact with the domain administrator but they are yet to reply to my correspondence.
Has anyone experienced something similar and come up with a good way to resolve it?
Thanks guys, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Very in-depth response so thanks for this.
I will see how quickly Google reindexes my proper site now that I have a redirect in place for that not so wanted domain.
I will also send another 'calm' e-mail to the domain owner to see if I can get them to respond and point it away from my server.
Thanks again!

Unfortunately, this might possibly an attempt by a spammer at what is called a 302 hijacking. Google says 302 hijackings haven't worked in years, but many webmasters disagree wholeheartedly.
(on the other hand, it might not be this at all)
Basically, a spammer points a temporary redirect (check the redirection through a tool like URI Valet to see if it's a 302). Often if the site has a slightly higher authority, it can fool the search engines into hijacking your traffic. A deeper explanation here.
Another possibility is that your site has been hacked. Check for spyware, check Webmaster Tools and check to make sure that your domain is not the one being redirected. In Webmaster Tools make sure there hasn't been a change of address, and do a fetch as Googlebot to make sure your pages show up correctly.
Finally, you can fight back.
- Contact the offenders hosting company and let them know
- (a scary letter from a lawyer might help
- File a spam report with Google
- Post the issue on Webmaster Central
If it is an actual 302 hijacking, Google should take care of it fairly quickly.
Often, these aren't 302 hijackings at all, but are caused by internal site issues. Do a thorough site audit first before taking further steps.

Hi,
To clarify:-
- Someone has a domain pointed at my server, the servers default site is my website.
- You type in a search term for my website, it lists their domain and not mine.
I have since added a redirect on my server for that domain but now I am losing traffic.
Very annoying!

I think you need to clarify what does someone has pointed their domain at my server mean?
if I setup hosting for this second domain and setup a redirect on it, all the traffic that is trying to reach us via respective search terms are then directed away from our site
how can you do this if its not your domain?
I dont think I could answer if i understood but i will watch and learn when someone does answer
Good luck

How can you promote a sub-domain ahead of a domain on the SERPs?
I have a new client that wants to promote their subdomain uk.imagemcs.com and have their main domain imagemcs.com fall off the SERPs. Objective? Get uk.imagemcs.com to rank first for UK 'brand' searches. Do a search for 'imagem creative services' and you should see the issue (it looks like rules have been applied to the robots.txt on the main domain to exclude any bots from crawling - but since they've been indexed previously I need to take action as it doesn't look great!). I think I can do this by applying a permanent redirect from the main domain to the subdomain at domain level and then no-indexing the site - and then resubmit the sitemap. My slight concern is that this no-indexing of the main domain may impact on the visibility of the subdomains (I'm dealing with uk.imagemcs.com, but there is us.imagemcs.com and de.imagemcs.com) and was looking for some assurance that this would not be the case. My understanding is that subdomains are completely distinct from domains and as such this action should have no impact on the subdomains. I asked the question on the Webmasters Forum but haven't really got anywhere

Parked domain is first in search results
We have several brand related domains which are parked and pointing to our main website. Some of these websites are redirecting using a 302 (don't ask, that's a whole other story), but these are being changed. But it shouldn't matter what type of redirect they are no? Since there has never been any traffic and they are not indexed? But it seems that one of them was indexed: exotravel.vn. A search for our brand name or the previous brand name (exotravel and exotissimo) brings up this parked domain first! How can that be? The domain has never been used and has no backlinks. exotravel.vn is redirecting and I submitted a change of address weeks ago to Google, but its still coming up first in all brand name searches for exotissimo or exotravel.

Eligible To Rank For Few Queries
I can't figure out why this site (www.liveathomeseniors.com) is eligible for so few search queries on Google Webmaster Tools. I know there is a lot of work to be done, but this is my biggest puzzle right now. What am I not seeing? 379 pages are indexed and yet the site is has only been deemed eligible to rank for 3 queries over the past 3 months. Is it all the repetition in the way the content has been structured? I'd appreciate people's thoughts on this. I can't see the forest for the trees. Donna

Domain Switch - With lost control of original domain.
Hey all, A client finally sold a domain name after being harassed to sell for many years, without talking to us about it first. They moved the site to a new domain, and the purchasing company took over the original domain. Then they called me, wondering why the site is no longer showing up in Google. I've done some initial research, and everything I find for advice assumes that you have control over the original domain. We don't. I'm hoping someone here has some creative advice, so we don't have to start from the beginning, and/or painfully update links we've acquired. My only thought was that the new company may be kind enough to post 301's for us if we provided them.... Any thoughts / advice / life rings will be greatly appreciated! 🙂

Redirecting Parked Domain
I just recently switched hosting. We have 3 domains and 1 being the main domain. Right now they are set up as parked domains. Can I redirect the parked domains under my main websites .htaccess file ? I am just worried that good we will get hit for duplicate content, even though technically the content is only on our main domain. right now if I type in my parked domains in Google, they appear in search. The site is all hand coded and not using a CMS.

Site Disappeared off of Search
A friend of mine has a site (http://bit.ly/q4iWkM ) that was ranking number one for their key word (Drimnagh() and has now completely disappeared off of the ranking. I did some checking and can't see a problem. She does have duplicate meta and titles throughout but this shouldn't be a punishable offence that I know of and is something that I am going to correct with a quick plugin install. I couldn't see any redirects or code stopping search either. When you do site:URL it shows up OK as well. She is client of mine (for website not for SEO) and she is really upset about it so any help from the forum would be appreciated. This isn't even a site I did but you couldn't get a better person to work with so I am eager to help where and if possible. Guinness all round if someone solves it next time you are in Ireland

My site ranking
Hello, I have a website and working more than 1 year ago,I worked hard last year and paid alot to make guys write articles from my website to other forums so my keywords rank high and got good visitors, then I get in much care in SEO and found SEOMoz with is very nice, when I downloaded the tool bar it was a shock to find my website is almost zero although the big effort I had, I can do more but I need to guide what I exactly need to improve my website,I almost read alot of the beginner PDF and got good information to work with and can hire people to help too. I did a real big work sharing my subjects and i can see them in top#5 google but for other sites and now i found I am still zero 😞 adding my links inside also didnt help or counted. attached the statistics of the website and the competitors site to let me know which important things to take care to jump over. would be very thankful for detailed help, Best Regards 1_01308477251.png 1_01308477465.png

Ranking with a .nu TLD
Hi everyone, A few weeks ago i purchased a .nu TLD, it's a really nice domainname but i'm wondering if it's possible to rank with this domain in Google? I've heard several times that it doesn't matter for Google which TLD a site has, but i normally never see .nu's high in the SERP's, what are your opinions about this? Is it possible for me to get this site high in google with good links and quality content? Thanks!
