Why Did Domain Authority On Our 2 Sites Drop 10 Points?
-
Greetings,
I am new to the community and am checking out Pro. The domain authority for two of our sites www.lumber2.com and www.americasworkclothes.com has dropped 10 points each respectively.
I've worked on getting our lumber 2 site on registries from getlisted.org (i think there are 5 or 6 of them).
Our page authority has improved significantly along with mosrank and moztrust. However, at the same time our domain authorities just tanked 10 points each. Since each site dropped 10 points, I'm wondering if its the ros links affecting them. Here's the domain data:
Lumber 2 site: DA 21: 50,489 links from 12 domains
America's Work Clothes: DA 20: 33,839 links from 5 domainsWe have left nav run of site links between our two sites and have had them in place for a couple of years with steady domain authority progression. Suddenly DA tanked. Is there a chance there is too much run of site linking? I already removed a few links, so you won't see all of them.
Can anyone help?
Thank you. Steve

Thanks again Back Burner. Have a great holiday season!

First, I should reiterate that I am only hypothesizing about why your DA went down. There are many, many factors that go into DA - what I talked about above is what I consider to be the most likely explanation without having really looked at your sites.
What I meant by "not as much domain diversity among smaller sites" is that you don't have enough links from unique root domains. Open Site Explorer shows that you have some 1,400 links from only 6 domains for one site and 1,400 links from 3 domains for the other.
You have a good amount of total links, but in the eyes of Google you have only convinced 9 other sites that your two websites are worthy enough to receive an editorial vote. Domain diversity is certainly a very important (although still only one of hundreds) ranking factor for Google.
Much, much more importantly - what are the keywords that lead to a purchase on your website? Which ones get a lot of traffic that you would like to rank better for? You need to work backwards from the keywords that are driving the best qualified (i.e. most likely to convert) traffic to your site and then build a linking/SEO strategy from there.

Hi Back Burner,
Thank you for the feedback. Excellent! I have a couple of questions. I understand the deep links that did not get crawled, but what do you mean when speaking of "not as much domain diversity among smaller sites?"
Also, do you think the disparity between linking domains and the number of links is affecting the rank?
Unfortunately, our page 1 competition typically have a minimum DA rank of 30 points at a minimum, so using this barometer suggests I'm not doing something well at the domain level correct?
Thanks again for the help! I need it!

Hi Steve,
SEOMoz just updated their PA & DA metrics - you can read more about it here.
The main takeaway is that in this crawl of the web SEOMoz focused more on getting a broader range of domains rather than crawling deeper pages on bigger sites. If you lost DA then that probably means you had quite a few deep links that did not get crawled and not as much domain diversity among smaller sites.
The main thing to always remember is that DA is for reference only. It is not meant to be a key performance indicator for your site! DA will continue to fluctuate up and down as SEOMoz improves their index of the web and continues to tweak the priorities of each crawl.
Yes, DA is highly correlated to higher rankings, but it's still a very high-level view of a site. If you're trying to get a feel for a random site at a glance, then DA & PA are great. If you're trying to figure out what your site is doing well and where it needs improvement, then you need to dig much, much deeper.
What keywords are driving traffic to your site? How well are you converting that traffic? What closely related keywords to your main ones could you rank better for? What 3, 4, and 5 word variations of those keywords do you rank for or could you rank for? These are the questions that are going to lead to positive actions, not 10 point fluctuations in your DA.

Domain hacked and redirected to another domain
2 weeks ago my home page plus some others had a 301 redirect to another cloned domain for about 1 week (due to a hack). The original pages were then de-indexed and the new bad domain was indexed and in effect stole my rankings. Then the 301 was removed/cleaned from my domain and the bad domain was fully de-indexed via a request I made in WMT (this was 1 week ago). Then my pages came back into the index but without any ranking power (as if it's just in the supplemental index). It's been like this for a week now and the algorithms have not been able to correct it. So how do I get this damage undone or corrected? Can someone at Google reverse/cancel the 301 ranking transfer since the algorithms don't seem to be able to?I have the option to do a "Change of Address" in WMT from bad domain to my domain. But I don't think this would work properly because it says I also need to place a 301 on the bad domain back to mine. Would a change of address still work without the 301?Please advise/help what to do in order to get my rankings back to where they were.

Domain Forwarding Help
A friend of mine is a domainer and he wants to forward 21 parked niche specific domains to my site for extra type-in traffic. This will turn out to be 30 extra hits a day. Obviously, since these are parked domains, the SEO benefits are none, we just want the traffic. My questions is how to do it. These are his parked domains, and will not be redirected forever, is a 302 redirect the best plan here? He planned on just going into his hosting/domain admin and selecting "forward domain" -- is this ok too? Also, he would prefer to forward these domains to a single domain he owns, and then forward that single domain he owns to my domain. So someone who types in one of these 21 domains will go typindomain.com ---> hisredirectsite.com ---->mysite.com any implications here? What is the best option and how to do it? Thanks

Bots gone from site for 1-2 hours
Hi everyone, From the beginning of March bots and crawlers begin to disappear from site completely for 1-2 hours and then come back again. It never happened earlier, they constantly crawled our site without stopping. We didn't make any changes on the site. After that pages and images start to disappear from G index. Does anyone have the same trouble?

Domains and subdomains
When I started a campaign for my message, I got the message: "We have detected that the domain www.vamospaella.com and the domain vamospaella.com both respond to web requests and do not redirect. Having two "twin" domains that both resolve forces them to battle for SERP positions, making your SEO efforts less effective. We suggest redirecting one, then entering the other here." I wasn't sure whether I had said it was a subdomain when in fact it was a domain (or the other way round), so I started another campaign for the same website using the other option and the message didn't come up. However, I still don't understand what you meant by this and whether it's an issue. When I search for my website in Google, it shows as vamospaella.com when other websites come up as www. and then their domain name. If it is a problem, is it to do with my hosting package and how it's set up or is it to do with my local site on my computer? I did ring my web host, 1&1, but they said they couldn't see a problem. Please can you let me know how I can resolve this as my ranking is still quite low in Google and I'm not sure why. If it is because of "twin domains", then will Google see my content as duplicated and keep me low in their rankings? I'm new to SEO and not a website novice, so please answer in lay terms! Thanks Melissa

Moving domain.com to subdomain.domain.com
Hi, I like to do something, but first like to take some opinions from seomoz. My question is: 1. I have a domain: brandtrends.com and i like to move this from brandtrends.com to trends.brand.com because: brandtrends.com is on the position #15 on the second page of SERP for my "brand" keyword. I like to move it under trends.brand.com but all inbound-links are @brandtrends.com What do you thing, if i move permanently 301 from brandtrends.com to trends.brand.com does it rank under brand.com on the 1st page of SERP..? like to rank trends.brand.com under brand.com on results page...!!! I have the backlinks of brandtrends.com on my hands too, should i leave the inbound links @brandtrends.com and the new ones i build with trends.brand.com or should i change the inbound links from brandtrends.com to trends.brand.com Hope you got it! THanks
