OPen Site Explorer listing criteria?
-
Checking link data for a potential client who has given me access to their websmaster tools account, I've noticed that Google list over 150,000 "Links to Your Site" but yet OSE only reports a tiny fraction of this number.
I have manually verified that there are in fact direct links from the sites that are listed in Webmaster Tools but not in OSE.Does OSE discard some links? Is there a reporting lag? Does anyone know why there would be such a large discrepancy?
-
Thanks anyway but no this client has never before done any structured SEO or link building. The site is a long established site with thousands of clients linking back to it and the checks I've done show that they are natural links.
I'll do a bit more digging but my previous observations had been that GWT underestimated the links versus OSE or previously Yahoo Site explorer. This is so far the other way around it is odd. -
That does seem a little odd. I tried finding info on how many links Google claims to have indexed, but couldn't find a reliable source. We indexed 38 billion domains and 387 billion links in our last Linkscape update.
That said, with how our crawlers work, if you're getting backlinks on domains with loads of other links on the page (which often happens if you're buying links), our crawlers will not grab every link on the page and that would definitely lower your backlinks profile with OSE.
-
Thanks Erica but in this case there are 19011.4% more links in GWT than OSE.
Would your diagnosis explain a gap of that magnitude or should I be looking for something else? -
OSE's data comes from our own crawlers. The simple fact is that our crawlers do not reach the same amount of data that Google's do. We're working on it and continually improving this. We use our own crawlers because we believe in the quality of getting the data for ourselves.
Hope this helps!

How do I see all links to my site in Web Explore?
It appears that the Web Explore looks for exact matches to a page. I'd like to see all matches to any page. Will regular expressions work?

I'm seeing duplicate links listed in open site explorer. Can anyone explain why this might be happening?
For each link listed in Open Site Explorer, I am seeing two identical entries. You can see why this might be a problem for both workflow and data accuracy. Any ideas why this might be happening? Is there a setting or filter that I'm missing?

Quote "There is no SEO software that can help optimize a site"
Hi all I am a developer for a small agency in the UK. I am using SEOmoz for a couple of our clients and I am also using it to learn from. So far I am finding it a great tool and this forum is also incredibly helpful. Now I also visit another forum called HighRankings.com and this months newsletter is a list of points that are defined as "SEO Mistakes". In it, point number 2 reads: "Repeat after me: There is no specific number of times a keyword phrase should be used in my content. There is no magic number of words that my pages should have written on them. And there is no best number of words or phrases that belong in a Title tag. And most of all: There is no SEO software that can optimize my website (despite the claims of their creators). Use your common sense to optimize your site! Learn how your target audience searches for products, services and information such as yours, and write about it accordingly on your website. Then write to make an emotional connection with your visitors so that they'll convert into happy customers." Now as a user of SEOmoz I wondered what others thought of this comment? Many thanks for reading. Kris

Batch lookup domain authority on list of URL's?
I found this site the describes how to use excel to batch lookup url's using seomoz api. The only problem is the seomoz api times out and returns 1 if I try dragging the formula down the cells which leaves me copying, waiting 5 seconds and copying again. This is basically as slow as manually looking up each url. Does anyone know a workaround?

Old Incoming Links Redirected to new pages are not Being Factored on the Open Site Explorer
Hi, My website has been online since 1994. We have old links pointing to pages that no longer exist so what we have done is to create redirects to the specific page where the content is being displayed now. However, when we use the Open Site Explorer, the linking root domains do not show those sites that contain old links pointing to our domain. One good example of this one is: dmoz.org. Am I improperly handling the redirects? Or, what do I have to do so that old links that are being redirected to the new pages where the information is are accounted when calculating domain authority and trust? Thanks, Alex

Open Site Explorer Not Working on 99% of Sites
I'm trying to use Open Site Explorer, but whenever I try to I get the error message "Ouch! It Looks Like Something Went South". Interestingly, I don't have this problem when entering a very popular site like google.com, yahoo.com, bbc.co.uk. Is there a problem with the tool at the moment, or something wrong on my end?

SEOmoz directory list, discussing individual directories...
It would be nice if the directory list (http://www.seomoz.org/directories) had an area to discuss each individual directory. Some of the directories like Internet Library have great domain authority, but have a large number of thumbs-down from users. I would like to know why. Personally, I'm very skeptical about directories. I'd love to prove myself wrong, though. The SEOmoz directory list in its current form isn't all that helpful.
