How to set up Adwords Account for Keyword Research
-
Hello,
At the advice of some knowledgable people around here, we are setting up a $200-$300 Adwords campaign to determine keyword research.
Our site is already doing well but we want to make sure we are targeting all the appropriate terms.
What do we need to keep in mind in setting up this campaign. I assume we would do some broad match terms with a bunch of negative matching.
Thanks!

And by the way - thanks John and David for such good responses so far

So what percentage of the total keywords will the Adwords keyword tool find for me, 80%? 90%?
We've already got 500 keywords from Google Analytics, and about 300 implimented on our site.
I'm trying to come up with the cheapest strategy.

If your goal is keyword research only you want to use exact match and use the keyword tool for ideas. Seo rankings on a keyword is like a exact match in adwords.
If you are using it to find new words i would use the modifier + match type

I would start with exact or phrase match keywords, as broad match can go quickly through your budget. If you know of queries you don't want ads to show for right away, go ahead and put those negatives in (also as either phrase or exact). Watch what queries are being triggered closely as the campaign runs. If there are queries that are getting phrase matched that are doing well, you can add them to your keyword list. If there are poor performing queries, you can add more negatives (based on your opinion or performance), or delete the keyword which is matching the query. If your exact or phrase match keywords are doing well, then I would try broad.
You can see the actual queries by going to the Keywords tab, and in the "See search terms..." droplist, selecting "All".
Also, have you considering trying any display network advertising? Remarketing campaigns can be relatively inexpensive, and convert well, so you might want to try setting that up first. Remarketing would be targeting people that have already visited your site before.

Can a third-party advertising agency lock me out of Adwords?
Hey all, I've just started at a new company. We spend quite a bit on Adwords and I'm tasked with seeing how that is going and assessing that spend. The problem is, Adwords and Youtube ads have been given to a third-party advertising agency. They are only willing to share the number of clicks, cost and conversions, stuff like that. They refuse to give us access to the account. Is this legal? I mostly want to get in there to look at keyword history, see what we have bid on, how often it was searched, stuff like that. But they won't let us in and I'm wondering if they are required to let us look at our account as I would think they are. Please help!

Disparities between AdWords clicks and Analytics sessions
Hi all, Have an Analytics account connected to my AdWords account which is showing HUGE gulfs in clicks and sessions for a CPM campaign. 500 clicks = 0 sessions. Does anyone have any idea why this could be the case? Auto-tagging is on and everything looks to be in place. The website itself is on a 303 so I was wondering could that be impacting things? The CPC is also just 1p so that's got me very suspicious. Thanks in advance.

Does anyone know if there are any adwords guideline restrictions against naming a product with the term "Clinically Proven?"
If you do a search for something like "protein powder" there are the sponsored ads where you can shop. Does anyone know if there are any guidelines against naming a product with "Clinically Proven." For example, "Clinically Proven Protein Powder." Any guidance, insight, or links helping to answer this question would be appreciated.

AdWords Negative Keywords
Hello community! I got a bit stuck with negative keywords management today! I have updated the negative keyword list and as it can be shared among all my active campaign I put it into the shared library. But when I downloaded the recent changes on Editor I can't get to see the new negatives and I can't check their match types. Do I have to upload the list on Editor for each campaign? Thanks

Bought domains to some of my best keywords. What should I do?
So I work in a very niche industry and compete very well with Google PPC. I was recently able to acquire domains of keywords that drive almost 40% of all our paid traffic and quite a bit of organic traffic as well. The problem is that these keyword domains carry no authority (obviously because i just bought them). Would i be best served to just do redirects with these names to my current site(s)? Or i was also thinking about setting up independent blog sites that would link back to my main site. I' was also thinking of changing the domains of my paid google ads to align with the recently acquired links.... Thanks in advance for your help!

Downtrodden Adwords Quality Scores -- Really?
Wow! 93% of our Adword keywords in our new campaign received a Quality Score of 4 or less. That means most of the keywords aren't showing. I received the quick answer from our Adwords advisor that, "Quality score is created from a variety of factors ... etc." Yes, I know that by reading Google's documentation. I dug deeper into the data. When I looked at keywords dashboard for this campaign, what vexes me is that it's all about "Keyword relevance: poor". That is repeated time and again in the keywords hover, bubble pop-up in Adwords. "Landing page quality: no problems". "Landing page load time: no problems". 63% of keywords have quality score = 3 29% of keywords have quality score = 4 We have thousands of keywords that are electronic part numbers. All keywords use phrase matching. We use dynamic keyword matching in the ads. I dug deeper. I chose random keywords (and corresponding landing pages) from lower quality scores (1,2,3,4) and higher scores (5,6,7,8,9,10). What is the difference? Examples: Quality score 1 = http://www.usbid.com/parts/LM2901 2 = http://www.usbid.com/parts/BZX84-A20 3 = http://www.usbid.com/parts/MAX4796 4 = http://www.usbid.com/parts/TMP302A 5 = http://www.usbid.com/parts/LTC4267-3 6 = http://www.usbid.com/parts/CAT1161LI-28-G 7 = http://www.usbid.com/parts/DS1216C 8 = http://www.usbid.com/parts/R10S-E1Y1-J5.0K 9 = http://www.usbid.com/parts/208M822-19B11 145785-000 10 = http://www.usbid.com/parts/TP3-PNEU-0.250 243362-000 Notice URLs with score 9 and 10 have url-encoded space (%20) -- just pointing it out. What is the difference between these pages that have such different quality score? And, interestingly enough, the majority of example keywords in the Urls above (LM2901, BZX84-A20, etc) have zero impressions and zero clicks thus far. Yes, the keywords have low traffic because this is exactly what people search for an purchase when making a B2B component buy. It's all about the exact part number. **I'd love specific suggestions of how to improve quality score of pages with a 3 or lower! ** Thanks kindly, Loren
