Website domain hosting and set-up for foreign domains?
-
Hi,
I am just wondering what the best practice is for marketing a business in two separate countries?
I have a new client that wants me to create their website targeted at the UK market which for me is normal but they also want to target Australia (Probably couldn't get any further away)
My initial thoughts are that the business would need two separate websites. The first one in the uk and the second website hosted on servers in Australia with different content.
Is this correct? or does anyone have any advice which may simplify getting this thing off the ground.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Robert,
Thanks for your reply.
Website budget and SEO budget are both an issue and so the sub directories route is definitely the way that we will be going with a .org domain.
Thanks again.

To bad there is no place where we could brainstorm live (without being cached :P)
L.E.: seoMozzers we need a chit-chat place

Ade,
For some reason this must be the beginning of the year of International SEO as there are a ton of questions lately around it. Istvan is correct on Rand's WBF being very good. (Note that some of the thread comments are great as well). A point within this is that the answer is not black and white but more based on client/brand capabilities and resources, is having cc TLDs worth giving up the links for or do you need them combined, etc.
As to having it all be separate, I don't think it is necessarily a rule that cc TLD with server "in country" is best. With the two you mention (and I am a Yank) I do not see any type of French bias. Given that, you are more likely at one site on a lot of levels.
Then use sub directories so that the domain as a whole builds authority. So, if you can get a good gTLD and then have all on one, there may be some economies in time, effort, $, and link power.
I am currently dealing with Africa / South America / US ...... and can't find a way yet to get to one site for the client..........

Hi Istvan,
Thanks for your reply, the white board friday link was just what I needed.
As budget is a big issue my client will most likely go for the same .org domain hosted in the UK with geo targeted sub folders.
www.domain.org/en
www.domain.org/auI thought that I would have an issue with duplicate content if both of these URLs were showing the exact same content but there was a link in the comments of the White Board Friday (http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2010/03/working-with-multi-regional-websites.html) that suggests that as long as both sub-folders are geo targeted at different contries then it isn't a problem.
Thanks again.

Hi Ade,
When targeting two very different countries then I would go for two separate websites, just as you have mentioned.
Also I would go for country specific TLDs which will help you in targeting the local markets easier. Build up country specific link partnerships, do some local SEO.
If going for only one domain you could go for a domain with different subfolders/subdomains which you geo-target for the specific countries.
If you are going for the second option, maybe you would like to check this whiteboard friday: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/international-seo-where-to-host-and-how-to-target-whiteboard-friday
I hope it helped,
Istvan

Sub-domain vs Root domain
I have recently taken over a website (website A) that has a domain authority of 33/100 and is linked to from 39 root domains. I have not yet selected any keywords to target so am currently unsure of ranking positions. However, website A is for a division of a company that has its own separate website (website B) which has a domain authority of 58/100 and over 1000 legitimate linking root domains. I have the option of moving website A to a sub-domain of website B. I also have the option of having website B provide a followed link to website A. So, my question is, for SEO purposes, is my website better off remaining on its own existing domain or is it likely to rank higher as a sub-domain of website B? I am sure there are pros and cons for both options but some opinions would be much appreciated.

International Domains for SEO
My company is international and we have websites for each country with Country Code Top Level Domains (ccTLD). I am in the US and I am seeing that other countries such as Costa Rica and Germany are ranking above us in search results. I thought Google automatically geo-targeted users by default and therefore I should only get .com or US results. Any idea why other countries would rank above our site?

XML Sitemaps settings for simple websites
We have numerous simple websites that are not updated very often (maybe once every 12-18 months). We are trying to create the perfect XML sitemap for them. Which brings me to my 2 questions:- 1. Should we include the "lastmod" tag in the XML sitemap? 2. What would you set the "changefreq" at? Once a month? Remember these sites are never updated as they are simple sites for industry sectors such as building and property maintenance. Please justify your answer and explain why as we are trying to understand.

New Website. Changing TLD or not?
Hi, At my company we are making a new website because the days of the old one are numbered. We already decided that the folder structure will be changed so we have more "clean" url's. Now we also would like to change from .net/nl to .nl . Since we already are redirecting all url's (>10.000), we think this is the moment to switch the TLD. What do you guys think? Is their anyone who has some kind of experience/tip they would like to share?

Does Having 3 Websites On Magento Affect Domain Authority?
We have a client who has 3 separate websites targeting the US, Australia, and the UK. Each of them has relevant ccTLD's such as: .com .com.au and .co.uk. Our client wants to use the Magento multi-site function so it combines all the stores (which are the exact same products) and merge it into one through Magento. Will this affect his Domain Authority? Or would they be treated as individual when receiving link value, trust, authority? There doesn't seem a lot information out there about this can anyone help? Thanks, Matt

Looking for guidance on transferring and incorporating content from a purchased website into an existing website
One of my client’s recently purchased a competitor’s website, and we would like to transfer the content from the competitor’s website (http://www.wilson-hardness.com) to our client’s existing website (http://www.buehler.com); at the same time we want to minimize loss in keyword rankings the competitor’s website has established. The two websites work in similar fields: one measures and offers products in scientific measurement and analysis of various materials. The other website offers products that are in similar field: hardness testing equipment. Looking for suggestions on how to proceed or recommended reading on the topic. I’ve tried to do research, but haven’t found anything, so I’m not sure what to topic-names to search. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Website Crawl problems
I have a feeling that Google doesn't crawl my website. E.g. this blogpost - I copy a sentence from it and paste it to Google. The page that shows up in search results is www.silvamethodlife.com/page/9/ - which is just a blog page with all the articles listed, not the link to the article itself! Did anyone ever have this problem? It's definitely some technical issue. Any advice will be deeply appreciated Thanks
