Setting up Google Analytics default URL
-
If someone has set:
-
the default url in Google Analytics to a non-www address (http://mysite.com)
-
then placed the UA tracking script from that GA account within the CMS framework of the website...
-
... and then set the permanent 301 redirect in the htaccess file to redirect to the www address (http://www.mysite.com).
How less accurrate will my GA analytics measurements be considering the default url within GA is non-www and the permanent 301 redirect in htacess is to the www-address?
Anyone know how reliable GA reports are until the default url in GA analytics is changed to match what is the redirected url in htaccess file?

Hostname injection is when you add the hostname value to the beginning of the content URI. Instead of seeing just '/index.html' in the content URI reports, you would see 'www.mysite.com/index.html'. This is helpful when you are tracking across multiple subdomains and you need to tell the difference between files on your different subdomains. You would see the following, as an example:
www.mysite.com/index.html
blog.mysite.com/index.html
store.mysite.com/index.html3 different pages on different subdomains. Without adding the hostname, they would have rolled up into a single '/index.html' line and it would be difficult to know which subdomains they are from.
More info on setting up the filter can be found here:

OK, thank you.
If I understand correctly, the tracking code for a single site did the work of tracking visitors, and the 301 redirect didn't change the tracking results -- even though the "301 redirected address" was at one time different from the "GA default url."
If I may ask, what is a hostname injection? And if possible please explain a use case example where hostname injection is used.

The 'Default URL' field in a Property Settings screen will do a few different things:
- Prefill a setDomainName value for your tracking code if you select tracking for multiple subdomains or domains. I'm just noting in here, since none of what you described would be a cookie domain issue.
- The Default URL would be would be prepended to the content URI when you are viewing content reports and click the icon to view the page in a new window.
What I'll emphasize is that your Default URL value will have no effect on your data collection. It's simply not used in any data processing. There are many use cases for having an empty Default URL, for example, if you are doing a hostname injection into your content URIs and you don't need another hostname prepended when you attempt to open a content URI in a new window, like I described in the 2nd option.
Hope this helps.

Everything is consistent now - 301 redirect to www, default url in GA set to www.
Tracking code has remained the same within cms because the GA account's url was changed to go to www.
It is a matter of too many chefs in kitchen and no one had control of entire picture at one point.
My question really is... when there was inconsistency in web address from 301 redirect (www-address) and the GA default url (non-www), why was GA still receiving traffic?
And how much can one rely on older metrics when this inconsistency was in place?

Hi Cindy -
Why would you set the default URL to non-www, and then set GA to track the WWW address? I think you should send all your traffic and tracking to one or the other. That's the first step in cleaning this up.
I would suggest mapping everything to the www version as you have this set in for your 301. Sooner than later would be best to get accurate tracking started.
oh - and fix the tracking code - to include the WWW version and not the non-www. That also needs fixing.
Cheers, Rob

Does Google Analytics track conversions in real time?
Looking at the section: Conversions > Goals > Overview - does Google Analytics provide real time / same day metrics for this conversion data or does it take 24 hrs?

Universal Analytics & Google Tag Manager - Track URLs that include hashes
Does anyone have any experience tracking URLs that include hashes (#) using Universal Analytics and Google Tag Manager? Can it be done using GTM's container for UA, using the "more settings" options? Or building another tag to work with the GTM UA container? The fallback I'm considering is implementing the UA code in GTM for every page as Custom HTML with the "ga('send', 'pageview', location.pathname + location.search + location.hash);" solution, rather than GTM's specialized UA tag. I'm not yet sure what problems may arise from that, if any. Thanks in advance.

Behavior Flow vs. All Pages report in Google Analytics
In the interest of determining why our ecommerce site isn't converting, I've been spending some quality time with GA. I've suspected that our front page is part of the problem, especially where our organic traffic is concerned (we get a good deal of referral traffic from a link on an OEM's site). According to the Behavior Flow report under the Behavior section of GA, organic traffic to our home page is hemorrhaging (roughly 60% bounce rate). But when I went to the All Pages report (Behavior > Site Content > All Pages) and looked at organic traffic to our home page, then looked at the Medium as a secondary dimension, I'm getting a bounce rate of 35%. Why the massive discrepancy? Can somebody assist?

Google Analytics Tracking Code Queries
Hello, I have taken on a new client who has Google Analytics installed. The tracking code is set to 'single domain'. Recently they added a mobile site using a sub-domain (m.website.com) which means that Google Analytics is not picking up this traffic. I want to revise the account so that I have a master account (raw data) and then profiles for the mobile site, main domain (www.website.com) and one other for a sub-domain that they are using. I am aware that there is mobile specific tracking code however I thought it would be easier (re conversions/goals/eCommerce tracking) to not use this and by changing the account to 'multiple domains' we could also get data for another sub-domain that they are using . My questions are: Am I right to want to use individual profiles over web properties. If not please explain why. When installing the tracking code (where the profile number is changing) I believe that I need to add that code with the changing profile number to the sub-domain sections. So my question is a) is that correct, and b) if I use a profile number on a sub-domain section will the master account still gather the data for the main URL as well as all sub-domains. If I change the master account from using 'single domain' tracking code to 'multiple domain' tracking code will this affect historical data? Will I lose the data? When changing from 'single domain' tracking to 'multiple domain' tracking does this affect eCommerce tracking? Or do we only need to be adding the additional lines of tracking code that allow sub-domains to be tracked? The web developers are using asynchronous code however half is in the and the other half is at the bottom of the source code. Given that traffic is being reported in the Google Analytics account should I have any concerns that the code is split? I have done a lot of reading but seem to be going around in circles, so your help is much appreciated! Thanks,

Google Analytics - In-Page Analytics
I had a strange thought waking up this morning, and was curious to hear other people's opinions on it. In Google Analytics, under Content > In-Page Analytics, Google shows what links on your site pages get clicked and how many times plus other metrics. Do you think they use that data for ranking back links so-to-speak? What I mean is, say I had a back link to my site on example.com, and example.com had google analytics installed. Google can see through google analytics whether my link has been clicked on. Say that my link gets no clicks, do you think that Google would use that metric against my site deeming it "not popular" or "not a good resource", even if example.com was a very popular site? And it could work the other way. Say my link got thousands of clicks on example.com, do you think that Google might use that to promote my site? I couldn't find any other discussion on this anywhere, so am not sure if people have already thought about this.

Google Analytics: Difference Between Goal Conversions & Goal Completions
When using Google Analytics, what is the difference between total goal conversions and total goal completions? We have many goals set up in a lead generation environment. Therefore, the only element of conversion is submitted a lead and arriving on the "Thank You" page. THose thank you pages are tagged accordingly. When we run reports though, the number of "Total Goal Conversions" and "Total Goal Completions" never match up.
