Explain this search result
-
Hi folks,
I came across a strange search result.
Search on Google Australia for "income portfolio".
http://www.google.com.au/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=income+portfolio
See the first result? It's a login page.
How is that search result showing? And in position #1! Where is it getting its title and descriptions tags from? Does Google have a way to somehow see what is behind the login?
Appreciate your thought.
-
You can provide logins for the GoogleMediaPartnersBot. But not for GoogleBot.
-
Thanks guys for your input.
Only thing, how would googlebot can get through the login page? Is there some way to provide Google a user and password?
-
Well, I believe they have used Fetch as GoogleBot (which is submitting to index).
Also they have it in their sitemap too in: http://www.intelligentinvestor.com.au/siteMap-pages.cfm (which is, I believe, submitted to index too).
I hope I am not wrong about this.
Istvan
-
Ah. I see. Thanx Istvan
Do you think that GoogleBot is not redirected as users are? How did Google index that.
-
www.intelligentinvestor.com.au/Portfolios/Income/ is not http://www.intelligentinvestor.com.au/login/?requestedPage=%2Fportfolios%2Fincome%2F
The first one has content, the second doesn't. While you are not logged in you are redirected to the second one. (Depends on cookies I think). If they have "smart" enough they have submitted their www.intelligentinvestor.com.au/Portfolios/Income/ to Google index, so Google can see it
-
How will GoogleBot log in?
-
Marcel, the webpage is the same, you only need to log in. As you can see the Cache for the specific page does show the "content-page". (And the cache was taken on 17th February 2012).
-
They changed the content of that page and Google have not updated their snippet's description yet.
See the WayBackMachine for how the page used to look:

Hi there,
Well they just made one stupid mistake
The page which they are ranking for is cached by Google. This is what Google is seeing: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:WP7UDTrc9loJ:www.intelligentinvestor.com.au/Portfolios/Income/+income+portfolio&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=au
Although that is a restricted Member area, they forgot to put noindex on it so this is where they've got.
It will raise Bounce Rate for sure (As I enter pages like this I tend to close them soon too and believe me, I am not the only one).
I hope that made a little-bit cleared,
Istvan

301 redirected all my pages to my new domain, now I have a problem with Google Search Console
Hi guys! I bought a new domain name and redirected all my URLs from the old domain to the new one. Everything worked perfectly but now I have a little problem. I want to use the option 'Address Change' in google search console. Step 1 Works (Select new website in the list) Step 2 Works (Confirm that the 301 are working) Step 3 Asks me to Verify the old domain (huh!?) in order to complete the request. Obviously that doesn't work because my 301s WORKS! So if I try to verify the old website by putting a google file in the root of my domain Google tries to access it and it automatically redirects to the new domain. I must be missing something lol help!

Canonical Url Structure Vs. Google Search View
I recently set up a new site and set the "preferred" domain in Google Webmasters to show URLs WITHOUT the WWW for google search purposes. In the confirmation email from google, this confused me: "This setting defines which host - www or not - should be considered the canonical host when indexing your site." In the website, we have cononical URLS at the top of every page in the header, but still have the WWW in those. Any issues with that?

Parked domain is first in search results
We have several brand related domains which are parked and pointing to our main website. Some of these websites are redirecting using a 302 (don't ask, that's a whole other story), but these are being changed. But it shouldn't matter what type of redirect they are no? Since there has never been any traffic and they are not indexed? But it seems that one of them was indexed: exotravel.vn. A search for our brand name or the previous brand name (exotravel and exotissimo) brings up this parked domain first! How can that be? The domain has never been used and has no backlinks. exotravel.vn is redirecting and I submitted a change of address weeks ago to Google, but its still coming up first in all brand name searches for exotissimo or exotravel.

No results with Link Analysis
So I have been working with a domain since November last year that still shows no improvement in regards to the link analysis. I am baffled because we have gotten them onto the first page on Google for a few of the keywords we are optimizing. Any help with this is greatly appreciated and I am a noob so definitely open to learning. Thanks in advance to all of you. Domain in question - www.modernportablerefrigeration.com Domain is currently on a shared server if that makes any difference. Cordially, Todd Richard admin@richfinn.org

For large sites, best practices for pages hidden behind internal search?
If a website has 1M+ pages, with most of them being hidden behind an internal search, what's the best way to get pages included in an engine's index? Does a direct clickpath to those pages need to exist from the homepage or other major hub pages on the site? Is submitting an XML sitemap enough?

How long does it take for customized Google Site Search to show results from pdf files?
The site in question is http://www.ejmh.eu I am pretty unsatisfied with the results I am getting from the Site Search provided by Google. We have over 160 pdf files in this subfolder: http://www.ejmh.eu/mellekletek The files are the digital versions of articles. When I search for content in those pdf files, Google does not show results. It does show results from older pages, dating back 1-2 years but it is certainly not showing anything from pdf files that I have just put up 3 weeks ago. My questions: If I place a Google Search on a site, does it not automatically display results from ALL the content in the root domain? Is there any correlation between how the Site Search is indexing the files and how Google is indexing the urls in general? Should I just wait and see whether site search performance improves or should I switch to another Search software like Zoom Search? It is vital to have a proper, high-quality search functioning on that site in the very near future. What are your experiences? Any tips are greatly appreciated.
