Blog posts, blog archives and duplication
-
Just reviewed a blog integrated with my website, and have noticed duplicate content - the blog homepage includes blogpost summaries (not a major issue as now set up so only put in opening paragraphy then anchor text to full blog post).
Then that's a full blog blog post if you click for more - then that's carbon copied over in the archive. So one near exact duplicate.
Is this something worth taking action on with nocrawl tags, etc., on archive duplicates of blog posts, or shouldn't I be to hung-up on this? I'm a scientist by training, so tend to go further and further once I get going...

Thanks Marcus - that's very useful. I am using Wordpress as it happens Off to do some reading...

Hey Luke
As a general rule of thumb, blogs will offer up a fair bit of duplication through tags, categories and archives so it can be worth not indexing those pages. For the posts themselves, you should have the option to create a unique snippet rather than using the first couple of blog paragraphs if you wanted to do that (best practice) but the duplication of the blog posts should be handled by the canonical tag so there is only one true instance of the article on the site.
You don't mention which blog package you are using but for WordPress, the yoast SEO plugin will help you easily deal with most common issues.
http://yoast.com/wordpress/seo/
The plugin does not do this all on installation and requires some simple configuration to fit your circumstances but the following page walks you through the configuration of the plugin so you can make a call on what to index, noindex, etc.
http://yoast.com/articles/wordpress-seo/
What if you are not using WordPress? Well, I would still read the above article. It deals with issues common to most blog platforms and covers technical optimisation, template tweaks, site structure, conversions and most importantly for you (section 3 I think) covers duplication created by the blog, pagination etc.
Well worth a read if only to get you thinking in the right direction and if you are using WordPress, then the plugin and that tutorial will put most of your problems, if not all to bed.
Hope it helps!
Marcus

E-commerce duplicate URLS
Hi I just realized that my e-commerce products do not have any difference except the SKUS, PRICE and THE PRODUCT name. Apart from each page has the same sidebar and a piece of content ( same ) under each product pages. And this is the reason why i am getting too many duplicate urls warning through Moz analytics. I do not have any other contents to add for each product because of the nature of the product. Only the price, product name and the SKUs will be different and rest will all be same for each products. How can i fix this ? Thanks

What do you think of this post? An ordered article or not???
Hi, Just encountered the following article on Digital Trends: http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/lg-z-rumored/ This is a huge and respected site. Notice, that whenever the word "smartphone" or "smartphones" is mentioned, there is a link to Sprint. Needless to say that Sprint has nothing to do directly with the article's subject (a new LG smartphone that may be coming soon). So, is this an ordered piece? Is this legit? Does it assist Sprint with the article that is not really related? Should I pursue these type of articles (links) for my site or only HUGE companies can get away with it? Any thoughts?

Duplicated Pages and Forums
Does duplicate content hurt that particular duplicated content, or the entire site? There are some parts of my site that I don’t care about getting high rankings on search engines. For example, I have a forum and there are certain links that only logged in people can see. If you aren’t logged in, they will take you to a page where it tells u to log in. google, obviously not logged in, interprets this as lots and lots of the same duplicated page. Should I just leave it alone cause I dont care if those pages makes it to search engines. Will it not hurt the entire site? For example, can my homepage search rankings decrase? That leads to my next question. What is the best way to optimize a forum? Whenever someone posts a new post, it seems another url for the same forum thread is created..... which is obviously duplicated….in other words, if like 20 people post on a thread, i believe my site adds 20 urls for that page...anyone know how to fix this?

Duplicate content
Is there manual intervention required for a site that has been flagged for duplicate content to get back to its original rankings, once the duplicated content has been removed? Background: Our site recently experienced a significant drop in traffic around the time that a chunk of content from other sites (ie. duplicate) went live. While it was not an exact replica of the pages on other sites, there was quite a bit of overlap. That content has since been removed, but our traffic hasn't improved. What else can we do to improve our ranking?
