Mapping and tracking old and new information architecture
-
Howdy.
So I'm working on "example.com", which has thousands of URLs. The site is going to be redesigned, with some changes to the information architecture.
I'm trying to think of a good way to organize and account for similarities and differences between the original information architecture and the new one. This should help with building 301s.
I've downloaded a list of URLs from example.com from Open Site Explorer. What I would love to do is generate a visual "tree" of the site based on the output from Open Site Explorer. It would basically look like a pyramid with all of the subfolders branching out.
Does anybody know of a tool out there that will do this for me? Or am I going to have a long day in Excel?
Any other thoughts on working through this process are welcome.
Thank you!

I wouldn't use OSE for this, given that they may not crawl all your urls
I suggest using a specifc cralwer that you can set to crawl the whole site. Give Xenu, Screaming frog or IIS toolkit a go to get a good idea of your urls. After you go live, make sure you have mapped all your old urls across to new ones
In my experience, a site never actually looks like a tree, people just like to describe it that way because its simple

Deleteing old page and passing on link strenth?
We are a printing company and thinking over bringing our products down to 2 - 3 rather than the 10+ we currently have, the pages we will be getting rid of will be pages such as flyers, booklets etc and just concentrating on banners and stickers would you suggest 301ing the pages to the home page or picking pages for them to go to? Also could we expect a decent raise for the pages we are left with? Thanks shaun

Strange URL redirecting to my new site
Hi all, I recently relaunched a site on a brand new URL - www.boardwarehouse.co.uk. I've spent the last couple of weeks building some backlinks as well as developing a basic content strategy. We've started ranking for a few of our less competitive keywords which is great, however there's a strange site which either redirects or is mirroring our content. I'm at a complete loss as to what's causing this to happen and what i can do to stop it. On the attachment - my content is top and second. The fourth result is the offending site. Any help/ advice would be most helpful! Thanks in advance, Alick 0BSyNn6

Moving to New Domain - Ranking impact
I understand that when migrating to a new site, even if done perfectly (page level 301s etc) that rankings will drop in the short term and each site will be impacted differently. I picked up the following comment and was wanting to get a few experts thoughts on whether I can quote this to my client: "In our experience, even when 301's are correctly executed, we see a short term fall back (7-30) days and then about a 90% carry through after that period for about 90 days and then back to full strength. "

New website
Hello, How bad is going to be if I change my Joomla website to Wordpress? I can check the 100 best pages and redirect them to the new url with 301 but my website has 424 pages. If is this needs time, how long does it take to be in the same position? Is Google review my new website quickly? What about if I make my services more specific and the main topic is going to be smaller in pages? (Mpre social services pages vs. less pages about the main webdesign topic) I should change my website to WP but I am afraid because now I am in the 2. 🙂 Thanks! Regards,
