New website, to www or not
-
I was just wondering if there are any advantages to using the www instead of just the domain name for seo.
Can these be elaborated on?
-
There was a time when we had domain names, but there was no world wide web (am I old?). It only made sense when we added the world wide web that we gave a sub-domain (www) to our world wide web server, after all that was what we did with our gopher server. But everyone that says, choose your favorite, is correct. It will make no difference.
Note: I had email before I had a mouse.

I believe it's just personal preference these days. Some people are dropping the www and making the non-www the canonical version since it's four characters shorter, which can be helpful if you're active on Twitter and other character-restricted networks.

I have never liked www. it is a waste waste waste of time and effort.
Be sure to tell webmaster tools about your preferred version,
in Site Configuration -> Settings

www is old skool!
get rid!

I understand 301'ing from one to the other (whatever you choose to do) for seo reasons, but is there any real REASON to setup a site as a www in the first place these days??
-
Hi Simon, As you know that both http://www.example.com and http://example.com are seen by Google as two different sites.
Regardless of how you choose the website name i.e www or non www , we don't worry about the people, they will always find a way to visit both the www & non www versions of your site. It is impossible to handle both the cases. Inspite of this people will always find a way to visit both the www and the non-www versions of your site. It is imperative that you handle both cases.
As we know that www is a sub domain, so site without www can create duplicate content issues.
To solve this problem of duplicate content you had to add the site in Webmaster Tools and simply use the choose the preferred domain version: then redirect [301] the non-preferred version to the preferred one:
I hope that your query had been solved.

Hi Simon,
I usually do prefer the www. version, but I believe there no major difference between the two versions when you are building up a fresh website.
Still, it is important to underline the fact, that you need to choose one of the two versions and eliminate the other one be redirecting: www -> non-www or non-www. -> www.
This way you will eliminate many duplicates from the start (and you will help your link juice flow better).
I hope it was helpful,
Istvan

Should we reinstate the old website?
In a nut shell we had a great site that performed well and grew month on month but it perhaps looked a bit dated. A decision was taken to build a new site and the job given to a PR agency for some reason. All the titles, H1 tags, page content and url structure was changed and now the site has drop 50% of organic traffic. I've been tasked with trying to rebuild rankings but so far it's not going well. A snapshot of the old website still exists and i'm very tempted to have it reinstated in the hopes that our traffic will recover. What are your thoughts?

Duplicate Content Issue WWW and Non WWW
One of my sites got hit with duplicate content a while ago because Google seemed to be considering hhtp, https, www, and non ww versions of the site all different sites. We thought we fixed it, but for some reason https://www and just https:// are giving us duplicate content again. I can't seem to figure out why it keeps doing this. The url is https://bandsonabudget.com if any of you want to see if you can figure out why I am still having this issue.

Website is not indexed in Google
Hi Guys, I have a problem with a website from a customer. His website is not indexed in Google (except for the homepage). I could not find anything that can possibly be the cause. I already checked the robots.txt, sitemap, and plugins on the website. In the HTML code i also couldn't find anything which makes indexing harder than usual. This is the website i am talking about: http://www.xxxx.nl/ (Dutch) The only thing that i am guessing now is the Google sandbox, but even that is quite unlikely. I hope you guys discover something i could not find! Thanks in advance 🙂

Help! www and non-www urls are driving me mad!
Sorry folks, I'm a very recently joined member, and after a five year gap in creating websites, I've decided to get back into the saddle and start again. Boy how things have changed! I'm soaking up all sorts of information from everywhere I can to get up to date with these changes, but I've come across this www v non-www problem in a big way. I realise there are already posts in here about this, but each time I read them, my mind seems to slip into some sort of loop that does not get anywhere. Basically, I think Google has indexed most of my pages as non-www, and only a hadful as www's. I have opened two accounts in Google Webmaster Tools for both www and non-www, and declared my preference for both accordingly. That was two days ago. As unprofessional as it may sound, I use Serif Web Plus X6, simply beacause it did the job six years ago, and it's all I know until I find and teach myself something better. My question is this - I can only create one page on X6, and yet there are two versions indexed in Google (although not all of them). I can only amend the one page that exists in X6, so how do I canonicalize two pages when there's the only version I have access to amending? Or am I miissing the point??? I hope that made sense?! I wouldn't mind, but I specified that I didn't want the site to be indexed yet with 'no follow', as it's nowhere near finished, but for some reason (probably due to placing Adsense ads on there) Google went ahead and indexed it anyway! The site is either http://www.cushioncutengagementringsstore.com or http://cushioncutengagementringsstore.com, depending on how you look at it! Any light you can shed on this would be gratefuly received! Thanks. Cem.

Website redesign launch
Hello everyone, I am in the process of having my consulting website redesigned and have a question about how this may impact SEO. I will be using the same URL as I did before, just simply replacing an old website with a new website. Obviously the URL structure will change slightly since I am changing navigation names. Page titles will also change. Do I need to do anything special to ensure that all of the pages from the old website are redirected to the new website? For example, should I do a page level redirect for each page that remains the same? So that the old "services" page is pointed to the new "services" page? Or can I simply do a redirect at the index page level? Thank you in advance for any advice! Best, Linda

Brand New Site Penalized?
I recently launched 2 completely separate and unrelated websites at the same time. Both are new domains and hosting accounts. neither have any links. One is ranking for a branded search and the other is not. The interesting thing is that I tested both sites on the back end of my server before launch. The site that is not ranking for branded search IS ranking still on the back end of my site for the branded search. I have removed all content and 301 redirected the testing urls back to my portfolio page. Could this be do to Google indexing one but not the other. Does it have anything to do with testing on my server first and my DA being higher than current new sites? Or is it something completely different I'm missing completely. Is this a Penalty?
