404 Page/Content Duplicates & its "Warning"
-
My website has MANY duplicate pages and content which are both derived from the MANY 404 pages on my website. While these are flagged in SEOmoz as "Warnings," should this be of concern to SEO effectiveness?
-
Hi Darren,
Sorry, but I'm a bit confused. Technically, both duplicate content and 4xx errors (404s) both qualify as "errors" instead of warnings.
An error is usually considered something that could harm your SEO. For large sites, a few errors wont hurt you much and are to be expected, but these are definitely something you want to address.
Feel free to let us know if you have any questions.
-
Do you mean you have many different pages for 404 errors, as opposed to having many pages that are returning 404?
If you have specialized 404 pages, for whatever reason, you should probably noindex them. That way google isn't trying to index a page thats just there to help your users find your content, and you're not getting dinged as a site that produces duplicate content.

Duplicate content is always a problem is the wrong page is being served up for a search term (i.e, a 404 page vs an active page). It's bad for bounce rate and conversions, and search engines eventually drop 404 pages from their index.
So, as far as SEO effectiveness goes, if people aren't getting served the content you want them to, yes, it's a problem.

Page Title "Untitled Document" with mozbar
Hi, I'm working on a big news website (in tourism) and, when checking my homepage with mozbar, I often get: "My Title • Untitled Document" - 69 characters With no apparent reason, If I refresh the page or simply visit it later, it could randomly switch to the "normal" title: "My Title" - 44 characters It looks like completely random to me, like something more is loaded in the first case. I've checked my source code of course, and <title>tag seems to be ok with no other <title> even when I get the "untitled document".</p> <p>I have no idea about that. I don't know if that can be a useful info, but I was trying to understand why the majority of my main keywords searches are only showing other pages (I can rarely find my homepage) even though my home looks correctly indexes and shows as first result for every site: research.<br /><br />Hope everything's is clear....any idea or suggestions?<br /><br />Thank you in advance.</p> <p> </p></title>

Sitemap Warnings
Due to an issue with our CMS, I had a bunch of URL aliases that were being indexed and causing duplicate content issues. I disallowed indexing of the bad URLs (they all had a similar URL structure so that was easy). I did this until I could clean up the bad URLs I then recieved a bunch of sitemap warnings that the URLs that I blocked URLs with robots.txt that were in the sitemap. Isn't this the point of robots.txt? Why am I getting warnings and how can I get rid of them?

Why would the SEOMoz Page analysis pick up exact keywords used in page title and text?
Hi, I am trying to optimise this URL : www.adaptiveconsultancy.com/ecommerce/features/advanced-ecommerce with the keyword being 'advanced ecommerce' With the 'On-Page Report Card' from SEOMoz that the exact keyword isn't featured in the page title or text, but it is in there. Why would this not be picked up? Thank you in advance,

URLs getting re-directed to double http:// URLs
The "Notices" section under "Crawl Diagnostics" shows that there are 435 issues on my website. I checked out a few URLs to verify this issue and found that most of these pages are working perfectly. For instance, the above mentioned report shows that http://policycomplaints.com/about redirects to http://http://policycomplaints.com/about/ . Then, http://policycomplaints.com/aegon-religare/mis-selling-of-policy-by-aegon-religare/ redirects to http://http://policycomplaints.com/aegon-religare/mis-selling-of-policy-by-aegon-religare/ . However, when I open these pages, they seem to be working perfectly. I didn't find them getting re-directed to somewhere else. So, as per the report, it seems that all of these 435 http://URLs are getting re-directed to http://http://URL versions which in reality is not true because all the http://URLs are working perfectly. So, is this a problem with SEOmoz software? If not, what is the reason for these issues and how can I adddress them. Do notify if any further information is required for the same. Thanks. bNiEm.png
