Is using splash pages considered cloaking?
-
For example I'm thinking of running people through a squeeze page when they come from search engines (for first time visitors only/cookied) ... example: http://www.whitehouse.gov/
Is it going to hurt SEO? Because basically you are serving a page that is different, than the one displayed in the SERP's.

Hi Jeffrey,
I think you'll see that most people are adverse to having some type of intermediate step to take before they see the home page. Can you explain to us a little more of how you envision this to happen technically, and what you're hoping to accomplish with it for your business?
-
Harald,
You might want to view the example that the original poster is using. It's closer to a lightbox effect than the splash screen that either of those two links describe.
-
Hello Jeffrey, I think that using splash pages will definitely hurt the Search Engines & this effects would easily recognized on the SEO.
I short it will affects the websites.

Thanks.

Ok Keri I will make it more clear .
Thanks for your suggestion.

Harald, this isn't quite what the user is asking about. The first link is fairly old, and the OP is looking at a different type of technology.
-
It is not a great idea due to the fact that:
-
First of all you're redirecting visitor to a different page then they are suppose to see - that is not a great user experience, which might cost you a high bounce rate (people actually not going any further).
-
Splash pages usually don't contain anything that could help you with the rankings i.e. links with the keywords etc. though obviously your site might have a different splash page.
-
There is a big chance that at some point you will loose the position in the SERPs because the page doesn't actually serve the requested content
My advice - do NOT do it - here's some reading you might find useful: http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=35769#2

| Hi Jeffrey, |
Splash Pages are the web pages that do not have enough content in them which tell the spiders of he search engines that not to indexed these types of pages & this will results in cloaking & these cause search engines to penalized you.
We know that using these splash pages in our websites would definitely results in loss. Below is link which helps you to know more about using the splash pages

Uhhh, I don't know how to answer this without sounding mean, but your site (I don't care how strong it is) is not going to convince Google to make an acception like they do for the President of the United States. You will beat yourself before you ever get started.
What Matt Cutts. He writes the algorithm for Google.
-
In my experience, there is at least a minor ranking hit. If nothing else, the google bot crawls your site alot slower for sure. If its a new site, or a site with a few links... I would definitely not risk it.
-
I don't know if it will hurt SEO but it will totally hurt conversions & sales.

Blog Page Titles - Page 1, Page 2 etc.
Hi All, I have a couple of crawl errors coming up in MOZ that I am trying to fix. They are duplicate page title issues with my blog area. For example we have a URL of www.ourwebsite.com/blog/page/1 and as we have quite a few blog posts they get put onto another page, example www.ourwebsite.com/blog/page/2 both of these urls have the same heading, title, meta description etc. I was just wondering if this was an actual SEO problem or not and if there is a way to fix it. I am using Wordpress for reference but I can't see anywhere to access the settings of these pages. Thanks

Which url should i use? Thanks!
I have a question regarding how to use my url, we are a Swedish-based website which have the url, http://interimslösning.se/ (that contains the Swedish letter “ö”) so the url can also be written as http://xn--interimslsning-3pb.se/. Which of the following url should I use for my backlinks, http://interimslösning.se/ or http://xn--interimslsning-3pb.se/ ? What is the difference between them regarding SEO? And is it good or bad to use letter like "ö" or other characters like that in your url? I was thinking that maybe it is good to use the letter "ö" for local search optimization in sweden, but i don't know.. Thanks in advance! Greetings,

Many Pages Being Combined Into One Long Page
Hi All, In talking with my internal developers, UX, and design team there has been a big push to move from a "tabbed" page structure (where as each tab is it's own page) to combining everything into one long page. It looks great from a user experience standpoint, but I'm concerned that we'll decrease in rankings for the tabbed pages that will be going away, even with a 301 in place. I initially recommending#! or pushstate for each "page section" on the long form content. However there are technical limitations with this in our CMS. The next idea I had was to still leave those pages out there and to link to them in the source code, but this approach may get shot down as well. Has anyone else had to solve for this issue? If so, how did you do it?

Rel canonical for partner sites - product pages only or also homepage and other key pages?
Hello there Our main site is www.arenaflowers.com. We also run a number of partner sites (eg: http://flowershop.cancerresearchuk.org/). We've relcanonical'd the products on the partner site back to the main (arenaflowers.com) site. eg: http://flowershop.cancerresearchuk.org/flowers/tutti_frutti_es_2013 rel canonicals back to: http://www.arenaflowers.com/flowers/tutti_frutti_es_2013). My question: Should we also relcanonical the homepage and other key pages on partner sites back to the main arenaflowers website too? The content is similar but not identical. We don't want our partner sites to be outranking the original (as is the case on kw flower delivery for example). (NB this situation may be complicated by the fact we appear to have an unnatural link penalty on af.com (and when we did an upgrade a while back, the af.com site fell out of the index altogether due to some issues with our move to AWS.) We're getting professional SEO advice on this but wondered what the Moz community's thoughts were.. Cheers, Will

Which Pagination/Canonicalization Page Selection Approach Should be Used?
Currently working on a retail site that has a product category page with a series of pages related to each other i.e. page 1, page 2, page 3 and Show All page. These are being identified as duplicate content/title pages. I want to resolve this through the applications of pagination to the pages so that crawlers know that these pages belong to the same series. In addition to this I also want to apply canonicalization to point to one page as the one true result that rules them all. All pages have equal weight but I am leaning towards pointing at the ‘Show All’. Catch is that products consistently change meaning that I am sometimes dealing with 4 pages including Show All, and other times I am only dealing with one page (...so actually I should point to page 1 to play it safe). Silly question, but is there a hard and fast rule to setting up this lead page rule?

Why do they rank the home page?
We are trying to rank for the key word Motorcycle Parts. We have moved up to page 2 over the past couple months; however, google is ranking our home page not our http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/s/49/61/Motorcycle-Parts page that is for motorcycle parts. We are working on internal linking to help point the right signals too. Any other thoughts? ( we have new content written to put in as well we just have to wait for an issue to be fixed before we can put it in)

Mass 404 pages
Hi Guys, If I were to have to take down the majority of my site, taking all content and links pointing to that content down. How would the search engines react? Would I get a penalty for the majority of the site all of the sudden missing? My only concern is the loss of traffic on the remanding pages. Thanks!
