Internal Links on eCommerce sites
-
I have been working on an eCommerce site; www.pretavoir.co.uk over the past year. Improvements in SERPs have been good with many top three positions. However, there are other important keywords of similar difficulty which refuse to behave in a similar way.... The site is PR4 and has a homepage PA 52. The homepage includes links to internal brand pages eg Prada, Gucci etc. Q Would it be worthwhile creating footer anchor text with eaxct text eg Prada sunglasses, Gucci Sunglasses?? Thanks

Hi
Thanks for your input. Screaming Frog looks like a very interesting tool. I will give it a go.

Thanks Erik. Your input is appreciated
As we use osCommerce I believe there are some technical issues with getting text onto category page ie Adidas Sunglasses page.

Thanks for your reply.
As regards internal links, is there any merit the the theory that link juice can be passed through exact match anchor text more powerfully eg rather than chanel in left hand nav bar there could be anchor text chanel sunglasses somewhere on home page?
I totally agree with your recommendation re meta descriptions. Is there a method by which you can increase likelihood that your chosen text will appear in serps snippet rather than some other text off your landing page?

One thing I noticed is that you're using landing/category pages which I assume you want to rank for the longer tail phrases (brand sunglasses, etc). What's interesting is that on the Adidas Brand Page page, you're using content and
that I would have thought belonged on the Adidas Sunglasses page while leaving the Adidas Sunglasses page blank of content.

Maybe that's a thing?

The Adidas brand page links to a few product pages - maybe add an anchor text link to the sunglasses page also. Although, I guess it wouldn't count because your sidebar comes before the content on your site's markup.

Just my ramblings... take with a grain of salt.

Sean,
In answer to your question, I don't think it would be worth it to do the footer links as I just don't see the value in those at all anymore. When I look at the site, I like it. I like the left side nav with each brand and the general nav at top. The site seems a slight bit slow but not to the degree that would bother ranking or visitors. So, why not just do some normal link work to the questionable pages? Get a few good links and see what happens.
Another component that falls into opinion is around traffic: How is the CTR for the higher pages vs the ones you are not getting movement from. I am a big believer that meta descriptions are the SEO's sales ad. If each one is not selling for you, you need to fix them. What I would experiment with would be pick a few PR 2 or PR 3 pages and then really write a great Meta description for each that answers the query someone would have: for a search of Ray Ban sunglasses - Ray Ban Sunglasses for those when you need them now! Free Delivery in the UK! 20% Discount for two pair. I never cease to be amazed at how we can increase traffic to a page by focusing on a great meta description.
You could also do something around having a short article on the main category page that maybe tells a "Ray Ban story" (My first Ray Bans by the Sunblock Kid), this provides interest though I fully understand that in the end they are wanting to see the sunglasses you have.
I always like to design some simple plan and then watch it over two to three months and then understand the results. It teaches you even if it fails.
Hope I helped a little bit,
Best

How else are those pages being linked to? Have you ran a Screaming Frog scan to see how many internal links they are getting compared to similar pages that are ranking well?

Links disappeared
Hi, I am a wedding photographer based in Liverpool. I have been trying to do my own SEO for the last 6 months. I have been hovering around the top of page two for the main search terms for the past few years. I used an SEO company before christmas who got a lot of spammy links which resulted in my site dropping to page 4 of the SERPS. With the help of this forum I managed to locate them and disavow those links, and have tried to do it myself. I have managed to gain a few "featured weddings" on national wedding blogs and wrote a few articles for another wedding blog and also some forum comments. I have also got a few links for example from a wedding band in exchange for some photographs. I have got onto page 1 about 4 times, the best result was at position 6 on page 1 but every time I have slowly dropped out again. I have methodically (once a month) checked for any of the spammy links and updated the disavow list. My competitors have at best old forum comments and the like and on checking their websites with open site explorer are not actively link building at all. I have just checked my Webmaster tools and google is only recognising 51 links. (none of my good wedding blog links are there) I have an external links csv from the 28th June with 602 links on it. I changed my website around May of this year but it is still on the same domain name www.dwliverpoolphotography.co.uk. Can anybody help? Best wishes. David.

A query about internal linking. Have I got this right?
Hi Guys I think this sounds like a right noobie question, but I am amongst friends so here goes. So our website is an ecommerce site selling magazines. There are certain magazines, for example Vogue, where we sell the UK version, USA, italian, spanish, french etc there's basically 13 different Vogue magazines on our site. The more niche ones attract some good long tail traffic. However, the UK version is competitive and so requires some extra umph to get us a half descent rank. However, when you search "vogue magazine subscription" for example, it's our italian vogue which is listed first. When I looked into this, I found that we had linked out from our UK Vogue to Italian vogue. Could this have given the italian vogue a marginal boost, as it had the additional internal links? What I have now done is add to some, not all, of the variations something along the lines "you will find the UK Vogue magazine here" where "UK Vogue Magazine" is the anchor text. Is this the right thing to do? Will this identify that the UK Vogue page is the higher priority page, or the more important page? I was also going to add to a category page a "Top 10 Womens magazines" section, and link to Vogue from there. Am I barking up the right tree? Thanks Guys Paul

Google is somehow linking my two sites that aren't linked! HELP
Good Morning... In my Google webmaster account it is showing an increase of backlinks between one site i own to the other.... This should not happen, as there are no links from one site to the other. Does anyone know why this is showing like this (google now shows 50,000 links from one site to the other).. Can someone please take a look and see if you can find any link from one to the other... original site : http://goo.gl/JgK1e new site : http://goo.gl/Jb4ng Please let me know why you guys think this is happening or if you were actually able to find a link on the new site pointing back to the old site... thanks a lot

Will training videos available on the "members only" section of a site contribute to the sites ranking?
Hello, I got asked a question recently as to whether training videos on the deeper pages of a website (that you can only access if you are a member and log in) will help with the sites ranking. On the SEOMoz software these deeper pages have been crawled as far as I can tell with errors reported on pages from the "members only" section of the site, leading me to believe the members only pages and their content will contribute to the sites overall ranking profile. I have suggested uploading the informational videos on the main pages of the site for now, making them accessible to all visitors and putting them in a more obvious place to encourage more sharing and views, however I've also said I would check it out with some experts so any information will be greatly appreciated! Many thanks 🙂 Charlotte

How is link juice passed to links that appear more than once on a given page?
For the sake of simplicity, let's say Page X has 100 links on it, and it has 100 points of link juice. Each page being linked to would essentially get 1 point of link juice. Right? Now let's say Page X links to Page Y 3 times and Page Z 5 times, and every other link only once. Does this mean that Page Y would get 3 "link juice points" and Page Z would get 5? Note: I know that the situation is much more complex than this, such as the devaluation of footer links, etc, etc, etc. However, I am interested to hear peoples take on the above scenario, assuming all else is equal.
