Best URL Structure for Product Pages?
-
I am happy with my URLs and my ecommerce site ranks well over all, but I have a question about product URL's. Specifically when the products have multiple attributes such as "color".
I use a header URL in order to present the 'style' of products,
www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-GIB-LPCCT-LIST
and I allow each 'color' to have it's own URL so people can send or bookmark a specific item.
www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-GIB-LPCCT-ANCH1
www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-GIB-LPCCT-WRCH1
I use a rel canonical to show that the header URL is the URL search engines should be indexing and to avoid duplicate content issues from having the exact same info, MP3's, PDF's, Video's accessories, etc on each specific item URL. I also have a 'noindex no follow' on the specific item URL.
These header URLs rank well, but when using tools like SEOMoz, which I love, my header pages fail for using rel canonical and 'noindex no follow'
I've considered only having the header URL, but I like the idea of shoppers being able to get to the specific product URL.
Do I need the no index no follow? Do I even need the rel canonical? Any suggestions?

thanks again!

I'd just keep the general ROBOTS variant and drop the ID:
The id="" shouldn't hurt, but it may be messing with our crawlers (Google should be ok). The additional GOOGLEBOT directive is repetitive.
-
I'm looking at the id= reference. I have:
<meta id="ctl00_robots" name="ROBOTS" content="robots" /><meta id="ctl00_googlebot" name="GOOGLEBOT" content="googlebot" />
What would you change that to?

Thank you, I appreciate the time you spend to understand and answer my question!

I think that canonicalizing the colors/variations back up to the "root" product is a good bet - while those color variations are technically unique, they can look like thin content to Google, especially at a large scale. A couple of suggestions, though:
(1) I wouldn't use the canonical tag AND Meta Robots (noindex) - it could confuse the crawlers. In this case, since there are separate URLs for the colors/variations and people might link to those, I'd just keep the canonical and drop the Meta Robots.
(2) I think our crawler might be tripping up on the id="" reference in the Meta Robots tag, but I'm not 100% sure. That shouldn't be an issue for Google, although I try to keep those tags free of ids and other extra attributes.
(3) In general, you don't need a Meta Robots tag for all bots and Googlebot separately (especially if the behaviors are the same). I don't think it's a problem here, but it's not necessary.

Changing site URL structure
Hey everybody, I'm looking for a bit of advice. A few weeks ago Google sent me an email saying all pages with any text input on them need to switch to https for those pages. This is no problem, I was slowly switching the site to https anyway using a 301 redirect. However, my site also has a language subfolder in the url, mysite.com/en/ mysite.com/ru/ etc. Due to poor work on my part the translations of the site haven't been updated in a long time and lots of the pages are in english even on the russian version etc. So I'm thinking of just removing this url structure and just having mysite.com My plan is to 301 all requests to https and remove the language subfolder in the url at the same time. So far the https switching hasn't changed my rankings. Am I more at risk of losing my rankings by doing this? Thanks!

Blog Page Titles - Page 1, Page 2 etc.
Hi All, I have a couple of crawl errors coming up in MOZ that I am trying to fix. They are duplicate page title issues with my blog area. For example we have a URL of www.ourwebsite.com/blog/page/1 and as we have quite a few blog posts they get put onto another page, example www.ourwebsite.com/blog/page/2 both of these urls have the same heading, title, meta description etc. I was just wondering if this was an actual SEO problem or not and if there is a way to fix it. I am using Wordpress for reference but I can't see anywhere to access the settings of these pages. Thanks

Titling Category Pages Like You Would a Blog Page?
So, with our 600 or so category pages, I was curious... on each of these category pages we show the top 12 products for that category. In trying to increase click through rate, I wonder if it would be prudent to use some of the strategies I see used for Blog posts with thee category pages. i.e. Instead of Category Name - Website Name How about: Top 12 Kitty Litters We Carry - View the Best and the Rest! Or something like that. And then in the description, I could put, "Number 8 made my jaw drop!!!" (Ok, kidding about that one...) But serious about the initial question... Thanks! Craig

Page titles in browser not matching WP page title
I have an issue with a few page titles not matching the title I have In WordPress. I have 2 pages, blog & creative gallery, that show the homepage title, which is causing duplicate title errors. This has been going on for 5 weeks, so its not an a crawl issue. Any ideas what could cause this? To clarify, I have the page title set in WP, and I checked "Disable PSP title format on this page/post:"...but this page is still showing the homepage title. Is there an additional title setting for a page in WP?

URL Structure: When to insert keywords?
I read the SEOmoz beginers guide and it said that it's beneficial to place keywords in the URL as long as you don't overdo it. However, this seems awkward for common pages, such as "Home", "About", "Contact" etc.... I've currently targeted a specific keyword for each page on my site, as follows: Home: "Green Screen" Work: "Greenscreen" About: "Event Photography" Pricing: "Green Screen Photography" Should I rename the URLs as: Home: ...com/green-screen-home.html Work: ...com/greenscreen-work.html About:...com/about-event-photography.html Pricing:...com/green-screen-photography-pricing.html

301 lots of old pages to home page
Will it hurt me if i redirect a few hundred old pages to my home page? I currently have a mess on my hands with many 404's showing up after moving my site to a new ecommerce server. We have been at the new server for 2 years but still have 337 404s showing up in google webmaster tools. I don't think it would affect users as very few people woudl find those old links but I don't want to mess with google. Also, how much are those 404s hurting my rank?
