What is the best permalink structure for WordPress?
-
Hi,
Does anyone have practical knowledge of the best permalink structure to use in WordPress? I have seen recommendations for just the post name or category and post name and then some who suggest having 3 digits as part of the structure for pick up in Google news.
I am left a little confused - does anyone have practical experience of the best structure please?
-
Thanks to both of you for your responses!
Quick question. I have just changed my post name after the page has been created since I want to have a different H1 tag but the permalink keeps the original post name. Does this cause any technical or SEO problems as far as you know?
Thanks again

I agree with Chris, I usually go with %postname% and then edit each post for the best value in url I can get. Thinking more about a call to action in the url sometimes will help get it clicked on in the serps as well...

It's your preference but I prefer just post name %postname% this means that if I ever chose to change a post to a page I can keep the URL structure in tact & not have to worry about redirecting pages.

Date in permalinks. Bad?
Hello! I have a recipe website with over 1000 posts. Currently I have the month and year in the permalink that everyone is hinting off to me is bad. On the same front people tell me if I change the permalinks to just the post name it's going to significantly slow down my site. I'm torn on this one about changing. From Google's standpoint is it better to change to the post name and if so should I be fearing I'm going to run into trouble with the change? Any suggestions you have would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

I already have an xml sitemap, so I've been researching how to create an html sitemap with over 10,000 urls for an ecommerce website. Any program, paid or unpaid, just needs to be created so it looks good to put in the footer of our website.

URL Structure for Product Pages
Hi Moz Community. I'm in need of some URL structure advice for product pages. We currently have ~4,000+ products and I'm trying to determine whether I need a new URL structure from the previous site owners. There are two current product URL structures that exist in our website: 1.http://www.example.com/bracelets/gold-bracelets/1-1-10-ct-diamond-tw-slip-on-bangle-14k-pink-gold-gh-i1-i2/ (old URL structure)

2. http://www.example.com/gemstone-bracelet-prd-bcy-121189/ (new URL structure) The problem is that half of our products are still in the old structure (no one moved them forward), but at the same time I'm not sure if the new structure is optimized as much as possible. Every single gemstone bracelet, or whatever product will have the same url structure, only being unique with the product number at the end. Would it be better to change everything over to more product specific URLS. I.e. example.com/topaz-gemstone-dangle-bracelet. Thanks for your help!

What is the best way to deal with https?
Currently, the site I am working on is using HTTPS throughout the website. The non-HTTPS pages are redirected through a 301 redirect to the HTTPS- this happens for all pages. Is this the best strategy going forward? if not, what changes would you suggest?

Best practice for XML sitemap depth
We run an eCommerce for education products with 20 or so subject based catalogues (Maths, Literacy etc) and each catalogue having numerous ranges (Counting, Maths Games etc) then products within those. We carry approximately 15,000 products. My question is around the sitemap we submit - nightly - and it's depth. It is currently set to cover off home, catalogues and ranges plus all static content (about us etc). Should we be submitting sitemaps to include product pages as well? Does it matter or would it not make much difference in terms of search. Thanks in advance.

.%E2%80%9d breaking the URL in wordpress
My wordpress URL is breaking and there are 5000 not found urls in webmaster due to some code being added %E2%80%9d. This code stands for double quotation marks - " Now the question is, where has my site gone wrong? I will tell you the changes which i have made Deleted a Vbulletin forum - Half of the errors are due to the forum being deleted directly Upgraded to Wordpress 3.3 (crawl errors did not show on the same day. Much later) Upgraded to Blue host pro (crawl errors did not show on the same day. Much later) These are some of the speculations. But nonetheless i have no idea why this is happening. To give further hints, the Home page URL is being added to the original URL. http://www.marketing91.com/article/http://www.marketing91.com http://www.marketing91.com/article/http://www.wrodpress.org So these are a list of problems i am facing in URL. Now i have no idea why this is happening. I can account for the deletion of a vbulletin forum. But that accounts only for half of the crawl errors. So any replies or answers??

Paginated Home Page Duplicates on Wordpress Sites
A number of my websites created on WP are displaying duplicate home pages with these types of urls. http://www.example.com/page/10/ http://www.example.com/page/11/ http://www.example.com/page/12/ I found these duplicates using the site:search command. Basically, put in any number and the Home Page opens. With the above mentioned url structure. Any idea on why they are created, how they can be stopped and what kind of an impact they would have in terms of SEO and the penalty that comes with duplicate content.
