Aggressive Loss in Rankings
-
I recently launched a website and used local directories, web directories and guest blogging as a means of getting links to the site. Within 60 days the site was ranking on the first page for a highly competitive keyword. It was hovering on the first page for about two weeks before it plummeted in ranking to near 200. I am not finding any crawl errors or duplicate content issues on the site. Could my links have caused this massive decrease in rankings?

No problem, good luck with your link building and rankings.

Thanks Ally. This is the route I have been taking but may have been over aggressive in the use and anchor text on directories. It seems there are a lot of people that just got hit by Google.
-
It depends on a few factors. I would initially start and look at your competitors backlink profiles (in your case whoever hasn't lost their rankings and is still on the first page) and see if there are oppurtunities for you to try and get a link. I would look at the sites that you are trying guest post on as well and check their link profile to ensure there is nothing odd there.
Also ensure you are creating fresh content on your site and blog so people will naturally link to you.
Thanks,
Ally

This definitely help. We have been varying the anchor text on our links to show a more natural backlink profile but definitely focused a lot of the links on our target keyword (which is also the name of the site/domain). Have you seen/heard anyone be able to quickly get their rankings back if they are able to build a more natural link profile?

Hi,
I think the biggest indicator is to look at the types of links you were building. What was the quality of these directory sites and the blogs that you were posting on?
Over the last couple of weeks Google has been penalising sites that considers having gotten links from blog networks. You may have been affected by this. Also have you been blogging on your own blog? Have you actively created fresh content for your blog that others would like to link to themselves.
Havre you also been focusing on your brand name when link building? As just focusing on a competitive keyword shows clear signs to Google you are over optimising.
Try and build a more natural linking strategy and also ensure you are updating the content on your own blog.
I hope this helps,
Ally

The domain has never had a site on it. I agree that in a competitive space there will be movement but this is drastic. The site went from the first page to close to 200. That signals to me there is something wrong. Any ideas? Could it be some of the links that were built (i.e. web directories)? The site does show up for the www and non www version and I just signified to Google the preferred domain in WMT,

Was the site a never before registered domain? Or was it already well in existence prior? If it's the latter, it might have had a history that was passed along to you.
The other thing to consider is that if you are entering a competitive space, your competition might have stepped up their game too...

Canonical - unexpected page ranking
We are getting good ranking for an unexpected page, rathewr than the one we were trying to get ranking for. Should we put a canonical on the 'unexpected page' to the page we would like to receive the ranking for - or do we risk losing the ranking? Any suggestions welcomed. Ian

Google Rankings Are Dancing What To Do?
I was been ranking on page no.3 for many of my keywords. Suddenly they all dropped to Page No.9& Page no.10. Now 10 days back one of my keyword got back to page no.4 & now suddenly today it went back to page no.9 again. I haven't done any changes to the site. My page speed is less than 4secs. Checked everything & all seems fine. No errors or manual actions notification in Webmaster too. Should i wait for the rankings dance to get over or should i start doing something. Currently i am planning to get fresh pages with good content added to the website for the whole month of July. Suggest me what to do?

2 pages ranking for the same term
Hi everyone, I have had two pages ranking on page two of Google for a while now for the same term. I have tried dedicating a page to it but as the other has a url with the search term in Google is ranking both it seems. How can I without deindexing one of the pages help better tell Google which one to rank? I imagine if it only ranked one page I would get a higher result rather than 2 weaker ones? On-site has been done and so has links to the homepage, but the innerpage still ranks also as it has the search term in its url. Would a canonical tag be worth it here? the page is however getting some traffic itself for other terms so I am reluctant to do that. Any help much appreciated.

Meta Keywords: Do They Hurt Rankings
I know that Google doesn't use meta keywords, but does it hurt to have anything in there? Just wondering if I need to remove all the meta keywords that are on my site, or are they harmless to have. Also, would meta keywords ever be used by an internal search plug-in if we were to install one in the future, or do they generally look at the product title and description for that info?

Not ranking in Google - why???
This will be a bit long, so please bare with me. I have a client in the auto parts industry who wants to rank their homepage for 13 different keywords. We are ranked first page for all keywords in Yahoo! Mexico and Bing Mexico, but not ranking first page at all in Google Mexico. My client's competitor, however, is clearly outranking my client in Google. When comparing both pages, my client's, while not 100% optimized, looks better optimized than their competitor's. Looking at all metrics using Moz, SEMRush, ahrefs, etc... my client's site looks MUCH better on all fronts. I know ranking a single homepage for more than 10 keywords is a difficult task. Our competitor is however, ranking for them, so it's not impossible. The keywords are not even that competitive according to Moz's analysis. I decided to create an optimized page for each keyword to try to rank these pages, but still my client wants the homepage to rank (again, if the competitor is ranking, then it's possible to do this) and I am afraid these pages I created could result in keyword cannibalization ultimately affecting the homepage's possibility to rank. My client had a previous SEO agency working for them and basically all they did was create fake blogs and have lots of keyword rich links directed to the site's homepage. I got the complete link profile from several tools and submitted a disavow requests for as many fishy links I could find, but that hasn't shown any results so far. Note: when looking at the competitor link profile, they have basically just a few links and no external links of real value whatsoever. My client is obviously very frustrated, and so am I. In my SEO experience, it shouldn't be such a difficult task to accomplish, however nothing seems to work even though everything seems to point that my client should rank higher. So now I'm running out of ideas regarding what to do with this site. Any insight you could provide would be SO helpful to me and my client. If needed I can provide my client's homepage URL and also their competitors homepage for you to review. i can also give you any extra information you need. Thanks a lot!

Bing Ranking Factors
I have a site and we rank very competitively on Google, but we would like to increase our exposure on Bing and Yahoo. I was wondering if anybody might have some tips or pointers for increasing your ranking on Bing. Also, if anybody knows of any Bing ranking guides or top ranking factors for Bing that would be very useful too. Thanks, Jason

Is my footer bad? i.e. hurting rankings
Just curious what people think of my footer. I think it provides some value. Not that many people click on it but it doesn't look that bad in my opinion. Curious what others think. If getting rid of it would help SEO I'd look into it. I outsource all my coding though so don't want to spend money tweaking what doesn't need to be done. www.jobshadow.com Thanks for the help!
