Linkscape update tracking
-
I've got two questions really. First, is there anyway to compare your current Linkscape updates with previous updates? Second, I've made a concerted effort to gain accumulate links in strong performing domains over the past 3 months. However, Linkscape does not seem to be finding those links. Some of them are pretty straight forward, like Yahoo Directory (this went live last month). Is there a lag time between when I link to a page and when Linkscape picks up.
Thanks,
Vincent -
Hi Vinny,
In general LinkScape updates every 30 or so days. So if you gain a new link or 3 part way through LinkScape's cycle it's very possible that it will not be included in the most recent update. Also, as awesome as it would be if LinkScape's directory were as large as Google's, it isn't. This is mostly just due to technology constraints I'd guess, and not having dozens of ENORMOUS data centers like Google. Because of this there is a chance that some links will not be picked up (especially if the links might be on really new sites, or maybe rather spammy ones). So it really turns into a waiting game to see if those links you know exist are picked up on the next LinkScape cycle or not.
Finally, unless I've managed to totally avoid it this whole time, the index doesn't have any sort of history. The amount of data storage required to maintain such a history would be crazy in conjunction with how often they currently update their index. To name drop one of SEOMoz's competitors (sorry guys XD ) majesticseo.com does actually offer historic indexing services. I don't know how in-depth they are when you're fully subscribed, as I've never been a paying member of their services. It may be something worth checking out.
And if someone comes into this question and corrects me about SEOMoz having historic index access, definitely do that instead! I know I will =P.

Linkscape API having bugs
Hi, We are using the SEOMOZ Linkscape API (url-metrics and links) but the the API is not working well. We are sometimes (without any proveable reason) getting an http error with code 401. Like I said earlier it happens sometimes really often and sometimes just once. What could be the reason for this? We have an account with the following login seo@traffic-builders.com. Thanks in advance!

When is the next linkscape update?
Hi, Can anyone on the SEOmoz team tell me when the next linkscape index update is going to be? Rand mentioned a few weeks ago that the aim was to launch it before 02/29. Just wondering if anyone had some updated info? Thanks, Rob.

OSE Latest Update?
As of yesterday's OSE update alot of sites that I'm tracking saw their PA & DA drop significantly. This was for multiple sites, whereas last month's index saw those stats increase significantly. Has anybody else seen this happen to them and perhaps drawn any conclusions?

OSE Update: No direct .csv Export
Playing around w/ OSE post update. Love that there are social signals. Having issues with exporting to .csv via email. What's the reasoning behind this change? Anyone have any solutions for circumventing (i.e. downloading data directly to excel via API)?

How Do You Leverage Linkscape Data to Overcome Your Competitors?
Hi everyone...I used Q&A a long time ago when my company had a paid subsription but I haven't used it in a while, so I'm excited! And since the Q&A is apparently addressed to the Moz community, I figured I would embrace it and ask all of the Mozzers out there: How do YOU use Linkscape to reverse engineneer a competitor's website? I understand how to use Linkscape. What I'm looking for is specific filtering or "out of the box" uses of Linkscape to truly understand how a website has obtained it's ranking in the search results. In particular, I'm really curious about how everyone (including those who truly know how Linkscape works, i..e the minds behind it) make sense of the "DJ Passed" #'s or "most important links" criteria. I realize Linkscape is wonderful, but what I've found is that often times the links that "pass the most juice" or the links that are the "most important" AREN'T actually the most important links on a site. For example, I often find that the links that have the highest "DJ Passed" are directories. I could be wrong, but my guess would be that directories actually pass very little link juice. If directories gave as much link juice as the linkscape metrics indicate, then they are by far the best linking source, which I think we all know isn't the case in most instances. To be clear...My intention is not to "debunk" the value of Linkscape...On the contrary, I think it's a wonderful tool and I want to understand it's nuances so I can identify "false positives", use it to get a true picture of a website, and get any tips/tricks from those who've successuly used it to overcome there competitors. Thanks ahead of time!
