Variables in URLS?
-
How much do variables in URLs hurt indexing of that page? I'm worried that with this huge string of variables that the pages won't get indexed.
Here's what I think we should have: http://adomainname.com/New/Local/State/City/Make/Model/
Here's the current URL:http://adomainname.com/New/Local/MN/Bayport/Jeep/Liberty?curPage=1&pageResultSize=50&orderDir=DESC&orderBy=ModifiedDate&conditionId=1&makeId=7&modelId=141&stateProvinceName=Minnesota&mc=1

Gotcha thx for the help

I'm not finding a great example, offhand, but basically, I'm suggesting that you could have city/state URLs, like:
www.example.com/illinois/chicago
...make model URLs, like:
...and individual product URLs, like:
www.example.com/honda-crv-1234
... but that you DON'T mix the first two and end up with something like:
www.example.com/illinois/chicago/honda/crv
....because you're going to spin out a ton of thin content. There's no perfect way these days to even do a lot of state/city pages - Panda hasn't been kind to that. Ideally, you need to have some sort of unique content for each one. If you're just spinning out content to target keywords, you're likely to harm your site eventually.
-
Hey Pete can you please point out a site that does this.
I know that its not good to add too many links to any page and we should only target two keywords on each page. What is the best way to optimize for every city within a state?
lets say we had 20 cities we want to target, is it best to build 10 pages each one targeting two keywords? what is the best practice for this?
-
Yeah, my gut reaction (although there's no one-sized-fits-all answer for every site) is in line with @blu42 - it's not so much about the folder-depth here, it's that this structure is inevitably going to create "thin" content, possibly by the truckload. Post-Panda, the days of just spinning out state+city+product are pretty much gone. It used to work great for long-tail search. Now, you risk it not only not working, but actually damaging your entire site.
It would be much better, IMO to have some kind of state/city structure but then land on the same make/model page, regardless of geography. You can get some kind of geo-targeting that way AND landing pages for products, but don't try to cross them on every variation. The tiny amount of long-tail traffic you pick up will probably be dwarfed by the problems you'll have.
-
It should get indexed however it is very deep...
Its probably better idea to have it structured http://adomainname.com/Category/Location/Make&Model/
-
Ahhh, you will definitely run into duplicate content issues!
You want to include a rel="canonical" to point to the domain & path without the variables. You don't want this sort of URL to be indexed (use robots: noindex, follow); it's much better to show the clean URL in Google.

Several hreflang links pointing to same URL
Hi, Does anyone know whether hreflang links can be used using the following markup? I can't seem to find any info on this particular usage, but it "feels" incorrect to me. (duplicate content issues)
Technical SEO | | dimitrihuyghe
Our development team tells me this is the way the markup should be, since languages are initially set using a cookie and all different languages are using the same URL. Thanks! <link rel="<a class="attribute-value">alternate</a>" href="<a class="attribute-value">https://www.littlethingz.be</a>" hreflang="<a class="attribute-value">nl</a>"/><link rel="<a class="attribute-value">alternate</a>" href="<a class="attribute-value">https://www.littlethingz.be</a>" hreflang="<a class="attribute-value">x-default</a>"/><link rel="<a class="attribute-value">alternate</a>" href="<a class="attribute-value">https://www.littlethingz.be</a>" hreflang="<a class="attribute-value">fr</a>"/><link rel="<a class="attribute-value">alternate</a>" href="<a class="attribute-value">https://www.littlethingz.be</a>" hreflang="<a class="attribute-value">en</a>"/><link rel="<a class="attribute-value">alternate</a>" href="<a class="attribute-value">https://www.littlethingz.be</a>" hreflang="<a class="attribute-value">de</a>"/>0 -
URL Parameters as pagination
Hi guys, due to some changes to our category pages our paginated urls will change so they will look like this: ...category/bagger/2?q=Bagger&startDate=26.06.2017&endDate=27.06.2017 You see they include a query parameter as well as a start and end date which will change daily. All URLs with pagination are on noindex/follow. I am worrying that the products which are linked from the category pages will not get crawled well when the URLs on which they are linked from change on a daily basis. Do you have some experience with this? Are there other things we need to worry about with these pagination URLs? cheers

Ajax Crawling | Blocked URLs Spike
http://www.zando.co.za/women/shoes/ (for example) Hello, I'm concerned that WMT is reporting a large spike in blocked URLs - now reporting more blocked URLs than good URLs. Our product recommendations get generated via an Ajax call and these autogenerated, unique, URLs are rendered in the /recommendations/ folder which sits in the root of our site: http://www.zando.co.za/recommendations/ I can't see how I can prevent Google from calling the Ajax - I can only assume that's what's happening. This is what the code typically looks like:

GWMT -- Top URLs for keyword is not the homepage
Hi Everyone - In google webmaster tools, in the Content Keywords section, when I click on a link of all of my top keywords they display a single "Top URLs". The URL which they display is not my homepage but a random category landing page of our e-commerce website. Should I be worried about this? Does this suggest that google is ranking this one URL ahead of our homepage?

Non existant URLs being generated in index
Hi all, I have a pretty big problem with my site at the moment which I'm worried will have an impact on my rankings. I've just had a crawl test done and for some reason I get a load of urls returned that don't actually exist... For example I am getting urls like this in my crawl test and xml sitemap: www.applicablejobs.com/jobs/add/android-designer/android-designer/android-designer/android-developer/android-developer/ www.applicablejobs.com/jobs/add/android-designer/android-designer/android-designer/android-developer/iphone-designer/ All the urls seem to start off with www.applicablejobs.com/jobs/ and there is an entry for every conceivable combination of slugs. I can only assume that if the crawl test and an xml sitemap generator is indexing these urls then Google and other search engines probably are too. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this issue and what can I do to remove them from Googles index if they are? Thanks

Handling '?' in URLs.
Adios! (or something), I've noticed in my SEOMoz campaign that I am getting duplicate content warnings for URLs with extensions. For example: /login.php?action=lostpassword /login.php?action=register etc. What is the best way to deal with these type of URLs to avoid duplicate content penelties in search engines? Thanks 🙂
