Pagerank mystery
-
Hello SEO brethren -
I've got a mystery I'm trying to solve. I work in house SEO at http://www.uncommongoods.com/
Our home page is a Pagerank 5. All of our sub-pages are Pagerank 0. Even this one below which has 276 links from 57 domains:
http://www.uncommongoods.com/product/recycled-wine-bottle-platters
Any clue what is going on here? Is a PR 0 typical for a page with this many links / linking domains?
Thanks!

No worries, best of luck with it

Hey Ben,
Great advice, I think you are dead on. Big help thank you!

In that case you will have all new URLs and the google toolbar won't be pulling off the data. This is why the homepage still has the PR as it hasn't changed.
It's just a case of waiting to get that back, you have done a redirect but it may take a while for these to be updated on the website. As the URL is different Google will still be waiting to update the toolbar.
I would personally not worry about it, at least you have the mozbar details.
Hope this helps,
Ben

Hey Ben thanks for your feedback.
We did change the extensions somewhat recently..We didn’t use .html, but we did use .jsp before a site redesign in October. So for instance, our item page URLs used to be:
www.uncommongoods.com/item/item.jsp?itemId=13271
and are now:
www.uncommongoods.com/product/pee-pee-teepees
We never had an extension on the homepage; for category pages (non-product pages), we made the switch around June 2010, and for the product pages and all other pages we made the switch in October 2010.
What would you suggest we do as a solution to get our page rank back?

Hi Zack,
Have you recently changed the extensions on your URLs? e.g. removed .html
This could be one cause.
Ben

PageRank flow and distribution?
I'm confused about PageRank flow inside a domain.. Please provide me with an well explained guide about flow of Pagerank as I know, i think it flows from homapage to internal pages and then internal pages to homepage. I think I'm wrong. Also, every page has its own PR, if I give backlinks to external website from my internal pages, is it going to impact the homepage's pr and authority? Highly confused.. 😕

To avoid errors in our Moz crawl, we removed subdomains from our host. (First we tried 301 redirects, also listed as errors.) Now we have backlinks all over the web that are broken. How bad is this, from a pagerank standpoint?
Our MOZ crawl kept telling us we had duplicate page content even though our subdomains were redirected to our main site. (Pages from Wineracks.vigilantinc.com were 301 redirected to vigilantinc.com/wineracks.) Now, to solve that problem, we have removed the wineracks.vigilantinc.com subdomain. The error report is better, but now we have broken backlinks - thousands of them. Is this hurting us worse than the duplicate content problem?

Controlling PageRank Flow Question
One of my competitors rose above me drastically, above everyone actually. His website has a sidebar on the homepage, but when you click a post it leads to a full width page of his content - with no sidebar at all. The only button on page is HOME. My site has the sidebar on all pages, meaning juice is flowing around in all directions. Would it be smarter for me to remove my sidebar as well? In theory, this would create a boost in rankings correct?

The Mysterious Case of Pagination, Canonical Tags
Hey guys, My head explodes when I think of this problem. So I will leave it to you guys to find a solution... My root domain (xxx.com) runs on WordPress platform. I use Yoast SEO plugin. The next page of root domain -- page/2/ -- has been canonicalized to the same page -- page/2/ points to page/2/ for example. The page/2/ and remaining pages also have this rel tags: I have also added "noindex, follow" to page/2/ and further -- Yoast does this automatically. Note: Yoast plugin also adds canonical to page/2/...page/3/ automatically. Same is the case with category pages and tag pages. Oh, and the author pages too -- they all have self-canonicalization, rel prev & rel next tags, and have been "noindex, followed." Problem: Am I doing this the way it should be done? I asked a Google Webmaster employee on rel next and prev tags, and this is what she said: "We do not recommend noindexing later pages, nor rel="canonical"izing everything to the first page." (My bad, last year I was canonicalizing pages to first page). One of the popular blog, a competitor, uses none of these tags. Yet they rank higher. Others following this format have been hit with every kind of Google algorithm I could think of. I want to leave it to Google to decide what's better, but then again, Yoast SEO plugin rules my blog -- okay, let's say I am a bad coder. Any help, suggestions, and thoughts are highly appreciated. 🙂 Update 1: Paginated pages -- including category pages and tag pages -- have unique snippets; no full-length posts. Thought I'd make that clear.
