Hi folks, I would appreciate your thoughts on this.
So, I work with a company who is based in Canada. I work in the US branch. There is little or no trouble for the website ranking well in Canada due to the lack of competition. That said, it is a bit more challenging here in the US due to extreme competition.
My Question:
Does having the site hosted in Canada make it any more difficult for the site to rank well in the US?
As always, thanks so much. I love this place!!!

All good - hope it works out well for you
-
Oh, yes, I see. These folks are just wondering simply should; where to host and be done with it. Nothing more elaborate. Thank you for your input. I never thought of doing that!! Cheers

No problem, glad I could help : )

Yes & you can also run the site via a Content Distribution Network (CDN) like Akamai that distributes the site content via a server located near the user.
For example, a user from Miami would get your website content delivered to their browser from a server in Miami rather than from your host in Canada - but like I mentioned, budget could be a restraint - this is taking it to the next level

Do you mean have /ca as well; such as John's link mentioned?
-
Cool thanks, I will also add that into my knowledge bank...... I'm a sponge. Always like to hear thoughts and ideas from others!
-
John, that was great, thank you so much1

CDNs can be quite good too as they deliver content quicker from a machine closer to the request (if budget permits)

Great article John provided. I recently did some research on this topic for a friend (luckily for me my clients are all US targeting US so I don't have to deal with it) and found this Matt Cutts video helpful too (a couple years old now but still relevant I think)

Server location - Web Hosting
Does it matter where your web hosts servers are located? For example you're a UK based company and your web hosts servers are in Belgium. Does this effect rankings ?

Multi-Country Hosting
Hi all
International SEO | | yousayjump
I have read a few post that are similar to mine on this forum but still wanted to ask my specific question. We have a .com domain hosted on a dedicated server in the UK for our main website which takes online bookings and payments. We have purchased the following TLD's of our domain name:
.it, .es, .ch, .fr, .es, .at We essentially want to create a satellite site on each domain where the idea is that users in those countries will find our satellite sites via organic search engine results when searching for the information we sell. Due to the nature of our infrastructure, each satellite site will connect to the mysql database on the UK site to drawn down its text content. This is where the main CMS is located. I understand the following are important from an SEO point of view for our satellite sites: Hosting in the country we wish to target
Geographical targeting via WMT
Local addresses and telephone numbers on the site
Correct lang=" " tag in the source code
Content presented in the correct language (goes without saying really) Can you advise on any other considerations? Many Thanks Kris0 -
Does Google take into account the place where the server is hosted to rank the pages.
Does Google take into account the place where the server is hosted to rank the pages. What I mean is, if I have a server in USA and I am working for the Spain marketplace: Will Google rank better my pages for this market if the server were hosted in Spain?

Geo targeting issue and hosting
Hi guys and gals, this is not a problem per se, but an oddity that I would appreciate some insight on from the big juicy brains in this community. Our site had hosting in the US, and I was concerned that therefore our relevance to our own country (Australia) was diminished because of it. For one of our main keywords we were a few spots behind the competitor on the 1st page for an australian searcher, but when i searched the same keyword from Google.com with gl=us to show US only results, we outranked the competitors by a few spots. On page elements aside (if anything we had more geo identifiers on the ranking page in question) I wanted to move hosts anyway and got hosting in Australia. The next week our search traffic jumped by 25%. But it was almost all US traffic. Australian traffic was unchanged. Any idea how this could happen? It's an .AU domain, hosted in Australia, with on page clearly identifying Australia. I checked webmaster tools and our geo is properly set to Australia. I checked the keywords that the traffic increased for and they are not geo specific at all. Besides that I don't know how else to pin this down. Thanks.

Hosting Speed Performance
Our site is currently hosted in Germany (1&1) and it primarily attracts users from the USA. We are however keen to improve our search engine rankings on UK search engines and are considering moving to UK servers. I have ‘heard’ that a site doesn’t perform as well for people visiting from the USA to UK servers as for example the German network where we are now. Can anybody offer advice on whether this will affect the response time of webpages to USA visitors? If it will have an affect, will this have a significant impact on SEO? Thanks,

Does hosting content for one country in another country negatively affect its SEO ranking?
Hi, my content is primarily for Australian audiences, however due to a general lack of competitive hosting infrastructure, I tend to host a lot of content in the US. A 2007 article I read implied that it's not a good idea - does anyone have a definitive 2011 answer? Cheers, Jez

Subdomain hosted in a different country - what are the implications?
Hello, We are looking at creating an eCommerce section to a website and we are just weighing up the options: Magento - host on hour own server - great but it can often be very slow when hosting a shared server. Shopify - hosted solution but hosting is in the US and we are in the UK and shop will be hosted on a subdomain as a result Build our own solution - time consuming and costly There are two issues that have arisen from this situation.... Is it worse for SEO to host your store in a different country or to host in your country but your store potentially run slower? I'm swaying to the side of the argument that says give your users a good and fast experience instead of worrying about where you host the store. Bearing in mind that the main website will be hosted in the UK anyway and it is just the subdomain that will be hosted in the US. Just wondered if anybody has had experience with this or if I'm missing something? All feedback greatly appreciated! Thanks, Elias
