Do dropdowns count as unique content?
-
My current site has some extensive unique database content by "widget" type. Currently we display this info into HTML 's, but we are considering utilizing this data in a dropdown field on each respective widget page.
I want to ensure we don't have thin content...Does the content within the <option>tags on a dropdown count towards unique content?</option>

As long as the search engines can crawl it, I doubt that one format would cause your content to be considered "more unique" than the other - it either is unique or it isn't, and the content itself is the same either way. Since it seems like the drop-down is a more user-friendly solution, that's what I'd do.
If you're concerned that your content won't be robust enough to rank for a term, I'd consider adding some additional, relevant text that contains the keywords you're targeting rather than trying to tweak the format of the same text - maybe via a blog post? But if you are finding your content to be unique enough now, in the tables, without adding extra text then I don't think switching it to be in a drop-down is going to wreck that.

This is good advice for checking to see if it counts at all, but I guess there is no way to definitively know whether date in a table trumps a dropdown without A/B testing.
-
From everything you're saying, it looks like search engines will be able to crawl the content either way (as long as you make sure the dropdowns are using search-engine-friendly code like HTML or CSS and not JavaScript or Ajax # tags).
Once the site launches, you can double-check that the content's being indexed by doing a site: query in Google that contains a large chunk of the text contained in the dropdown.

Not yet. We are still designing wireframes.
I am wondering if the data in a combobox like below would count as unique data:
http://miamicoder.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/image_12.png (possible new display)
We currently have our data displayed in HTML <tables>that I don't believe to be as user friendly, but do count as unique content.</tables>

(assuming the data is the same in both pics above)

I'm having a hard time picturing what you're describing - do you have an example URL I could take a look at?
-
I was thinking the same...Therefore I am considering populating both my dropdown and a data like my current site to ensure unique content is not too thin and I get long tail searches on some of the more unique product listings.
-
If you can view the code when using a "view source" or similar then the code can be crawled. That being said I don't think an option button would be considered content by a search engine so it wouldn't be unique.

Create Longer Content or Separate Pages
Good Afternoon We've been helping out on a site which for instance offers Hotel Breaks in Birmingham. There is a page on the site birmingham-hotel-breaks and the most popular package that people book is actually Hotel Breaks with a Transfer package. The Birmingham Hotel page focuses mainly on the Hotel and Transfer packages but it's been suggested that we build out a separate page birmingham-hotel-and-transfer to be more keyword targeted and change the original page to focus solely on the Hotel side. I wasn't sure whether it would be better to build out the content on the existing page as people are already linking to us for the packages

Duplicate content and canonicalization confusion
Hello, http://bit.ly/1b48Lmp and http://bit.ly/1BuJkUR pages have same content and their canonical refers to the page itself. Yet, they rank in search engines. Is it because they have been targeted to different geographical locations? If so, still the content is same. Please help me clear this confusion. Regards

Duplicate content in product listing
We have "duplicate content" warning in our moz report which mostly revolve around our product listing (eCommerce site) where various filters return 0 results (and hence show the same content on the page). Do you think those need to be addressed, and if so how would you prevent product listing filters that appearing as duplicate content pages? should we use rel=canonical or actually change the content on the page?

Https Duplicate Content
My previous host was using shared SSL, and my site was also working with https which I didn’t notice previously. Now I am moved to a new server, where I don’t have any SSL and my websites are not working with https version. Problem is that I have found Google have indexed one of my blog http://www.codefear.com with https version too. My blog traffic is continuously dropping I think due to these duplicate content. Now there are two results one with http version and another with https version. I searched over the internet and found 3 possible solutions. 1 No-Index https version

Question about duplicate content in crawl reports
Okay, this one's a doozie: My crawl report is listing all of these as separate URLs with identical duplicate content issues, even though they are all the home page and the one that is http://www.ccisolutions.com (the preferred URL) has a canonical tag of rel= http://www.ccisolutions.com: http://www.ccisolutions.com http://ccisolutions.com http://www.ccisolutions.com/StoreFront/IAFDispatcher?iafAction=showMain I will add that OSE is recognizing that there is a 301-redirect on http://ccisolutions.com, but the duplicate content report doesn't seem to recognize the redirect. Also, every single one of our 404-error pages (we have set up a custom 404 page) is being identified as having duplicate content. The duplicate content on all of them is identical. Where do I even begin sorting this out? Any suggestions on how/why this is happening? Thanks!

Syndicated Content Appearing Above Original
Hi. I run a travel blog and my content is often re-posted by related sites with a backlink to my content (and full credit etc) but still ranks above my article in Google. Any ideas what I can do to stop this happening? Thanks

How important are unique titles and descriptions?
Hi there, I've recently started working on a very large travel website. One of my main duties is to get it rankings for certain terms (which it is't at the moment, at all!) A large proportion of the website is dynamic, meaning that the pages, and URLs are produced using sessions. I've already enquired with the company who provide the website about how I can get unique meta data for each page on our website. They came back and said it can be done for the static pages, but not for the dynamic pages. This leaves me with about thousands of pages with duplicated meta data. Not at all ideal. I was just wondering how damaging this is likely to be to the SEO of my site. Am I going to be able to achieve rankings even with this issue? Or do I need to get it sorted ASAP? Thanks
