How often are there enough backlinks
-
Hello,
I'm slowly finding backlinks for our niche site.
90% of the competition is using internal pages so mining competitors is hard.
I'm mining sites that are in the backlinks of my competitors.
Question:
In cases like this, what percentage of the time do you think that it is possible to find enough backlinks to rank in the top 3?
For example, is there always enough backlinks to rank high enough? Is there only enough half the time? I know this is a general question but maybe you could try the answer it followed by a statement of "why I gave this answer"
Thanks!

One idea off the top of my head is to look for mentions of your brand or URL where there are not links, and ask them to link. I'd also read through the link building posts from SEOmoz at http://www.seomoz.org/blog/category/4 and get some ideas from there.

Mining the competition's backlinks is a good tool in the prospecting toolbox, but you're also going to have to find a lot of links of your own as well in most cases, to have a shot of ranking up near where the competition ranks.<<
If you don't mind, could you list the ways to find backlinks besides

mining competitor's backlinks

mining competitor's backlinks' backlinks
We have time to slowly write content but not to guest post.
Thanks!

And, keep in mind - if you use a tool to find out (about) how many backlinks your competition - or, the the top 3 sites for whatever keywords you are targeting - has, you just need more than that. Even better if you can get .gov/.edu links to help give you heft.

I'd say less than 1% of the time, if ever.
When you're looking through the backlinks of your competitors, you are never going to be able to get all of those links that they have. In fact, the acquisition rate is often pretty low (but still worthwhile, certainly). Some of the sites will be shut down, some will have linked specifically to them for a good reason and aren't going to link to you just because you ask. So at best you'll have some percentage of what you see they have.
But of course a bigger issue is that you are likely only seeing a small portion of their backlinks, so they're also benefiting from a bunch of links that you can't even see.
Mining the competition's backlinks is a good tool in the prospecting toolbox, but you're also going to have to find a lot of links of your own as well in most cases, to have a shot of ranking up near where the competition ranks.

Number of backlinks throughout time
From what I understand one important aspect in link building is how those backlinks have been acquired throughout time. So if a website gets a large number of backlinks in a short amount of time, the value of those links are reduced in the eyes of search engines. Is there a tool in SEOMoz (that i can't find) that would show the change of backlinks for my campaigns in the last one year?

Backlink of competitor inner page
How to understand from where the link to a competitor's internal page http://www.exampledomain.com/contest/book are coming? I mean, we want promote the same "event" but we want understanding where the competitor is already present. Open Site Explorer doesn't have any data for the website listed but I'm sure that the page has a lot of backlinks (I've verified the first 50 manually in Google.it) Many Thanks for all your advices.

Can't find backlinks shown in report.
I ran an advanced report to show me all the backlinks pointing to a domain. When I go to many of the domains listed, I can't find the link. I've searched the pages by anchor text in the browser and nothing comes up. Anyone know why this would be?

OSE Backlink results - reported link not actually there?
Not a complaint, but a question to understand how the research tool operates: When I run backlink checks on websites, often the reported link is not only not on the page, but it's not found anywhere on the site. I use several tools to search for the link url as well as for the keyword. Why does the tool report a link is there, but I cannot find the links in some cases? Is there a lag in the information the tool is using, making it not quite up to date, or is it something else? Thanks much!

Does the Moz Toolset offer anything like Raven's Backlink Explorer from fresh index
It seems like a useful feature where I can see what backlinks look like right now vs. the last monthly Moz dataset update. That is mostly because my site is new, but wondered if I was missing something. Thanks, Steven

How long does it take Open Site Explorer to register my backlinks?
I have been using Open Site Explorer for the following website http://www.doorhandlesltd.co.uk/ I have been link building for serveral months now and added over 100 links including directories such as business.com yet when I run the Open Site Explorer report it says I only have 10 root domain links.......the ones that were there before I started my link building. Any ideas on why this might be? Or does Open Site Explorer take a certain amount of time to collect this data? If so does anybody know how long this takes? Thanks
