Should I ask third pages to erase their links pointing at my site?
-
Good Morning Seomoz Fans, let me explain what is going on:
A surfing site has included a link to my Site in their Footer. apparently, this could be good for my site, but as It has nothing to do with my site, I ask myself if I should tell them to erase it.
Site A (Surfing Site) is pointing at Site B (Marketing Site) on their Footer. So Site B is receiving backlinks from every single page on Site A. But Site B has nothing to do with Site A: Different Markets.
Should I ask them to erase the link on their footer as Surfing people will not find my Marketing Site interesting?
Thanks in advance.

A thumbs up for Martin! I'd do what he suggests Christian and get rid of the footer links and replace them with a link from a relevant page, preferably within the body content. There may already be a relevant page on the site that can pass a little authority, but if not follows Martin's advice again and get writing!
Enjoy the weekend guys! Lee.

My actual conclusion then would be to maybe do a guest post for your friend's site talking about how surf school could benefit from considering their marketing and get a valid in-context link rather than just a link in a footer, which Lee above quite rightly points out could be seen as spammy.
That way you're contributing positively to the development of your friends site and the in-context link appears just on one page (not site-wide) and actually means the page is a relevant, but highly targeted/specialist page which validly links to your site.
Should get you a bit more targeted referrals, rather than you 100% bouncing ones too

Hi Martin and Lee, thanks for answering this question, I'll just answer your points Martin:
1.- Because the owner of the site is a friend of mine and he thought it would be a good idea.
2.- I think it does give my domain some value, because it is a link coming from a Non Spammy site that has a Page Authrotiy of 39 and a Domain authority of 28 according to Open Site Explorer, which I think is not bad at all. But the thing is that it is not relevant although the anchor text that he put might be relevant.
3.- I get some visitors but very few. And they all have a Bounce Rate of 100%, so they really dont like or are not looking for any possible service that I offer.
Conclusion: I think that it is passing me some Link Juice, because the domain has a better Domain Authority than mine ! But, it has nothing to do with surfing, my site is about marketing online and translations..
But, his anchor text was "Marketing Online for your Surfschool" (In Spanish), so in that way, it does have some relevance, but it is not producing anything.
I hope I have answered your doubts so you can tell me your opinion. Thanks in advance. And Thanks Lee Jackson as well, I marked both your answers as Good Answers! Cheers.

Yes Christian, I would definitely request removal of the links.
The Google Penguin update on April 24th targeted sites that were using spammy backlink tactics, and site wide footer links came under that bracket, particularly those that didn't seem natural (i.e. non-relevant). Other backlinks that came under attack were site-wide blog roll links, and links from spammy networks.
No one knows for sure if the backlinks you mention will harm your site, but my guess is that they will.
Would love to hear other people’s opinions!

My first three questions would be
- Why did they put the link there in the first place?
- Does that link have any 'value' to your SEO campaign (maybe do a quick analysis of the URL in Open Site Explorer)
- Are you getting any visitors through the link?
If the world was free of SEO's I think a 'natural web' would have links between unrelated resources as different people find things relevant or interesting. If the site linking is not generally spammy, and you get the odd visitor through then so long as you are checking it's not doing you any harm then leave it (especially as it seems to have occurred without you asking).
If the surfing site is poor quality then that could reflect badly on you - then get them to remove it.
If the surfing site has little link value and/or you're not getting any visitors through it and/or those that are do not stick around for long, then again get them to remove it.
So do a bit of digging on the page linking up first and see what you find and make your decision based on the data available

Is a canonical tag the best solution for multiple search listing pages in a site?
I have a site where dozens of page listings are showing in my report with a parameter showing the page number for the listings. Is the best solution to canonical these page listings back a core page (all-products)? Or, do I change my site configuration in Webmasters to ignore "page" parameters? What's the solution? Example URL 1- http://mydomain.com/products/all-products?page=84 Example URL 2- http://mydomain.com/products/all-products?page=85 Example URL 3- http://mydomain.com/products/all-products?page=86 Thanks in advance for your direction.

Duplicate Page Titles Warnings, htaccess Rewrite & Canonical Links.
Hey guys, Just signed up for a pro account and I am getting Duplicate Page Title warnings on links that are duplicate, rewritten for SEO, but have a canonical href tag. I have two sets of links in my store: SEO friendly: http://www.mysite.com/item/iphone-case Operational link: http://www.mysite.com/shop/product.php?pid=11 This operational link however has a href canonical tag pointing to the SEO friendly link as being the primary link. My question is; Do I need to worry about this Duplicate Page Title Warning if I am using a canonical tag on the Operational link pointing to the SEO friendly link? Thanks!

Keep getting random broken links pointed at our website
Over the past 6 months I've noticed an increase of 404 errors being picked up by Google Webmaster Tools. When I look at the errors table and review these errors the links are invariable made up likes being generated from what looks like scraper sites or sites with search results embedded into them. Below are some examples of them. Broken Link URL Generating the Link www.mysite.com/rwickenhauser http://www.webstatsdomain.com

www.mysite.com/..app http://213.174.143.40/

So do I need to setup redirects for these or can they be ignored?0 -
Are aggregate sites penalised for duplicate page content?
Hi all,We're running a used car search engine (http://autouncle.dk/en/) in Denmark, Sweden and soon Germany. The site works in a conventional search engine way with a search form and pages of search results (car adverts). The nature of car searching entails that the same advert exists on a large number of different urls (because of the many different search criteria and pagination). From my understanding this is problematic because Google will penalize the site for having duplicated content. Since the order of search results is mixed, I assume SEOmoz cannot always identify almost identical pages so the problem is perhaps bigger than what SEOmoz can tell us. In your opinion, what is the best strategy to solve this? We currently use a very simple canonical solution. For the record, besides collecting car adverts AutoUncle provide a lot of value to our large user base (including valuations on all cars) . We're not just another leech adword site. In fact, we don't have a single banner. Thanks in advance!

Mega Menus - Site Links - Bottom of the Page
Here are the questions: If you replace your top menu with a mega menu - like rei.com, target.com etc - that has dramatically more links and lots of non-optimized testimonials and calls for action, and locate the actual code of the mega menu at the bottom of the HTML , How will this affect your sitelinks? Will this now, make your on-page content more visible and indexable? Or does the Google bott dismiss this as just navigation content? In the past, I've have seen this technique work well, but that was before site links were easier to obtain. Looking at sites with virtually no navigation on their home pages and good authority, I've seen site links seemingly gleamed from alt attributes.

Diagnostic says too many links on a page and most of the pages are from blog entries. Are tags considered links? How do I decrease links?
I just ran my first diagnostic on my site and the results came back were negative in the area of too many links one a page. There were also quite a few 404 errors. What is the best way to fix these problems? Most of the pages with too many links are from blog posts, are the tags counted as well and is this the reason for too many links?

What's the max number of links you should ever have on a page?
Our homepage has a few hundred links and our index pages(pages that link to our spintext pages) have about 900 links on them with no content. Our SEO guy said we have to keep the links under 1000 but I wanted to see what you guys think.

I have a site that has both http:// and https:// versions indexed, e.g. https://www.homepage.com/ and http://www.homepage.com/. How do I de-index the https// versions without losing the link juice that is going to the https://homepage.com/ pages?
I can't 301 https// to http:// since there are some form pages that need to be https:// The site has 20,000 + pages so individually 301ing each page would be a nightmare. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
