Canonical link on canonical url
-
This might seem a bit of an odd one, but we seem to be going around in circles on this when using the on page optimizer tool.
We have an ecommerce site (magento) which by default is putting a canonical link in the header on every product page.
For example;
www.example.com/product1.html has the
But when we run the on page optimiser tool, we're losing points on the critical section for not having canonical set correctly.
If we remove the tag, we get the tick and the a grade, but then further down the report we lose a tick for not using canonical links.
What are we missing here?

Thanks Guys,
Turns out it was an indexing issue on the website. Magento was being slow to rebuild the index after seo friendly urls changed - this made it appear as though the canonical link on the page was pointing to the wrong place.
We've re-run the tool after manually rebuilding the index and all is good.

A self-referencing canonical isn't necessary, in most cases, but it doesn't seem to cause any practical issues. I'm not sure why our tools are saying that your canonicals weren't set up correctly. We do have a notification if a canonical tag points to a different URL, but that's really just a heads up (in most cases, canonical tags will point to different URLs than the page their on). There's no good way to detect what page should be canonical, so our warnings are a little hyperactive in a few cases.
I would double-check that your internal links match your canonical URL - that's the biggest issue we see (inconsistent signals).

I dont see why you need to rel canonical the page to itself .
I believe you can get in touch with the dev team here to get them to fix this issue .

Need help locating a 404 link
My reports are showing a 404 error for a link to a page in our WP site for which we changed the URL months ago. I can't find where the link is coming from. I used Screaming Frog, but can't find where it might tell me the origin of the link, only that it exists. I am pretty sure it's internal. Can someone please tell me how to find the originating page so I can remove the link without having to comb through every page of the site to look for it? Thanks!

OK I'll try again.... Linking root domains and external links
I'm new to the crawl test tool, I think I know what is meant by external links and linking root domains but I need to check. If there are 500 external links and 50 linking root domains does that suggest the essentially those 500 links are coming from 50 root domains? If yes, then what would 1000 linking root domains and 100 links mean? Or am I completely wrong in my assumptions and if so, can somebody point me in the right direction? Thank you.

Why do the competitive link analysis numbers not match the domain analysis?
There is only one area that our competitor out ranks us and that is in the total links on the root domain. But when i go to competitive link analysis we have more links then they do. Any ideas?

Percentage of good links vs. bad
Hi Does anyone know the best way of determining good links from bad links using the SEO Moz tools? I bought some directory links to two or three pages on my site a few years back. The were all very obviously spammy because of the anchor text and I didn't have a high enough ratio of good links to counteract them. I read somewhere that if more than 10% of the links to a page have the same (or similar) anchor text, it's obvious that you're on the bad list.

How Old is OSE link data?
I ran an anchor text report for my client today, which shows that their site has some incoming comment spam links using totally unrelated phrases (pharma products). However, when looking for the live link, the linking page no longer contains the link to them. Maybe the webmasters removed these, but I can't track down a single one... how old is this data? thanks

Crazy competitive link analysis, 1 - 40 - 38
I'm seeing very strange results on my competitive link analysis. It used to give me a fairly constant domain authority of 38, now one hour i'm seeing 1, then 38 then back to 1 but if I look in opensite explorer it says I have 40. The same weirdness is having to every other stat in the section both in the overview and more detailed section. The same thing is happening with one of the other competitors i'm comparing my link profile with. What's going on?

Dynamic URL pages in Crawl Diagnostics
The crawl diagnostic has found errors for pages that do not exist within the site. These pages do not appear in the SERPs and are seemingly dynamic URL pages. Most of the URLs that appear are formatted http://mysite.com/keyword,%20_keyword_,%20key_word_/ which appear as dynamic URLs for potential search phrases within the site. The other popular variety among these pages have a URL format of http://mysite.com/tag/keyword/filename.xml?sort=filter which are only generated by a filter utility on the site. These pages comprise about 90% of 401 errors, duplicate page content/title, overly-dynamic URL, missing meta decription tag, etc. Many of the same pages appear for multiple errors/warnings/notices categories. So, why are these pages being received into the crawl test? and how to I stop it to gauge for a better analysis of my site via SEOmoz?
