Noob 101 - Sitemaps
-
Hi guys, looking for some sitemap help.
I'm running two seperate systems so my auto-generated sitemap on the main system has a few holes in it. I'd like to submit this to webmaster anyway, and then plug the holes with missing pages by adding them to 'Fetch as Google'. Does that make sense or will Google ignore one of them?
Many thanks,
Idiot

If they are under one domain you could use some external sitemap generator and generate a single sitemap for both no?

A sitemap is just a file. So, as long as you can modify the automated sitemap file and insert the tags for the second CMS, you should be fine. You would have had a problem if there were 2 sitemap files in the root as it would mean that your site is giving different sitemap files.
Out there in the webmaster tool, you can list the path of your sitemap file and Google bot would automatically pick up the file.
So, your approach looks good to me.

I have two cms systems running different pages on one website. One cms has an auto-generated and updated sitemap on one, but there is none on the other. I want to use the sitemap, but need to manually 'add' the missing pages from the second cms.
Many thanks for the quick reply!

Do you have 2 systems and a single sitemap or 2 systems with 2 sitemaps? What exactly do you mean when you say that you have 2 systems? Are they 2 different websites?

Sitemap For Static Content And Blog
We'll be uploading a sitemap to google search console for a new site. We have ~70-80 static pages that don't really chance much (some may change as we modify a couple pages over the course of the year). But we have a separate blog on the site which we will be adding content to frequently. How can I set up the sitemap to make sure that "future" blog posts will get picked up and indexed. I used a sitemap generator and it picked up the first blog post that's on the site, but am wondering what happens with future ones? I don't want to resubmit a new sitemap each time that has a link to a new blog post we posted.

Sitemaps, 404s and URL structure
Hi All! I recently acquired a client and noticed in Search Console over 1300 404s, all starting around late October this year. What's strange is that I can access the pages that are 404ing by cutting and pasting the URLs and via inbound links from other sites. I suspect the issue might have something to do with Sitemaps. The site has 5 Sitemaps, generated by the Yoast plugin. 2 Sitemaps seem to be working (pages being indexed), 3 Sitemaps seem to be not working (pages have warnings, errors and nothing shows up as indexed). The pages listed in the 3 broken sitemaps seem to be the same pages giving 404 errors. I'm wondering if auto URL structure might be the culprit here. For example, one sitemap that works is called newsletter-sitemap.xml, all the URLs listed follow the structure: http://example.com/newsletter/post-title Whereas, one sitemap that doesn't work is called culture-event-sitemap.xml. Here the URLs underneath follow the structure http://example.com/post-title. Could it be that these URLs are not being crawled / found because they don't follow the structure http://example.com/culture-event/post-title? If not, any other ideas? Thank you for reading this long post and helping out a relatively new SEO!

Duplicate Titles and Sitemap rel=alternate
Hello, Does anyone know why I still have duplicate titles after crawling with moz (also google webmasters shows the same) even after I implemented (since 1 week or 2) a new sitemap with rel=alternate attribute for languges? In fact, the duplicates should be in the titles like http://socialengagement.it/su-di-me and http://socialengagement.it/en/su-di-me. The sitemap is on socialengagement.it/sitemap.xml (please note formatting somehow does not show correctly, you should see the source code to double check if its done properly. Was made by hand by me). Thanks for help! Eugenio

Do Seomozers recommend sitemaps.xml or not. I'm thoroughly confused now. The more I read, the more conflicted I get
I realize I'm probably opening a can of worms, but here we go. Do you or do you not add a sitemap.xml to a clients site?

Which is the best wordpress sitemap plugin
Does anyone have a recommendation for the best xml sitemap plugin for wordpress sites or do you steer clear of plugins and use a sitemap generator then load it up to the root manually?

Sitemaps - Format Issue
Hi, I have a little issue with a client site whose programmer seems kind of unwilling to change things that he has been doing a long time. So, he has had this dynamic site set up for a few years and active in google webmaster tools and others, but is not happy with the traffic it is getting. When I looked at webmaster tools I see that he has a sitemap registered, but it is /sitemap.php When I said that we should be offering the SE's /sitemap.xml his response is that sitemap.php checks the site every day and generates /sitemap.xml, but there is no /sitemap.xml registered in webmaster tools. My gut is telling me that he should just register /sitemap.xml in webmaster tools, but it is a hard sell 🙂 Anyone have any definitive experience of people doing this before and whether it is an issue? My feeling is that it doesn't need to be rocket science... Any input appreciated, Sha
