Any idea why this is reporting a 404 in MozTools?

I did away with a vague category and 301 redirected the category url to the home page. However the link is reporting as a 404 in Moz Tools when it scans my site. Here's the link, and as you can see it redirects to the home page. Just curious if I did something wrong. Thanks.

Totally agree with Ryan, you should redirect https to http
Trivial maybe, but can see no reason not to do it as it takes no effort and makes your site even more accessible to users who mis-type, key your address directly into the url bar while on a https site etc

While I know that Ryan decided to drop the https:// protocol problem, I just wanted to explain why it could be an issue for you.
It may not be a concern for a lot of personal sites, but for those where the site may be serving a strongly recognized brand it definitely should be a concern. That recognition could be coming both from your online visibility and/or from your involvement in offline communities or activities. Basically, if you have a reputation or following, people who know of your site will be much more likely to type your URL straight into a browser to go there.
I, for example, have come to know and love noahsdad.com through your involvement here in SEOmoz Q&A. I've visited the site, love your work and from time to time it crosses my mind to drop in and see what Noah has been up to lately. Since I know the site's domain, when that happens, I click inside the field at the top of my browser and replace everything after the www of the site that is open with noahsdad.com.
Now, in the event that the page I had open in my browser when I did that happened to be using the https:// protocol and I didn't realize that (which often happens), I would actually be asking my browser to go to https://www.noahsdad.com...and I think now you see why this could be an issue for you.

It could be that MozTools is looking at a cached version . You could try fetching it in Google Webmasters Tool to see how Google sees it ( which is what you should really worry about )
But as far as I can see you have 301 in place for that category to your home page : www.webconfs.com/http-header-check.php?submit=submit&url=http://noahsdad.com/mom-md

I would need to see the full record from the crawl report in order to respond. Perhaps you can upload the record to a web server and share the link?

My real question is still why the redirect is showing up as a 404 when the site is crawled. I'd still be interested in figuring that out if you have any thoughts.

I am going to let this issue drop since it is such a small item for a personal site. A few last thoughts:

No, it does not. On the SEOmoz site, you are seeing the proper redirect. For example, if you take this Q&A post and prefix it with https:// you will wind up on this exact Q&A post in the http:// protocol. If you look at the Mozbar, you will see the redirect.
On your site, you are taken to another page from your hosting company.

There is no need for you to purchase a SSL certificate. That is not what I was suggesting.

Regarding https sites I dont know many personal sites that pay for a https cert (or even why there would be a need.) Also I don't link to anything with https. It doesn't seem really seem necessary (unless I"m missing something.)
Heck, I just tried to go to https://seomoz.com and their site doesn't even go there.

Perhaps I am being too picky, especially for a non-business site.
I would share that even though your site is noahsdad.com, you took the effort to redirect www.noahsdad.com to noahsdad.com, right? Why did you take that extra step?
Whatever the response, the same concept would apply to the redirect from https protocol to http. The issue may never come up, but then again it only requires minimal effort to close this gap.

Are you certain you crawled the site after the redirect was in place?
If so, can you share the full record?
By the way, while looking at this is issue I noticed your site does not handle https protocol well. Try using it on your home page and see what happens. If your site does not use https, I would suggest redirecting all https requests to their http equivalent.

Working on a Wordpress website, https://thedoctorwithin.comScanning the site’s 404 errors, I’m seeing a lot of searches for URL/essayorg/topic, coming from Bingbot, as well as other spiders (Google, OpensiteExlorer). We get at least 200 of these irrelevant requests per week. Seems like each topic that follows /essayorg/ is unique. Help. Recently my organic traffic has dropped 40%. Any advice / ideas?
Lately my organic traffic has dropped significantly as well as my adsense revenue. The moz report says, for example, my traffic is down 40%, but I a still #1 for that keyword. Also, in the last week, suddenly my number of indexed pages doubled. We had done some page rewriting and maybe messed that up. We've fixed that though. Webmaster tools is still picking up all of our old pages and the new ones. Background: We recently launched our new responsive website in March. March income was about the same as February. April dropped off suddenly (maybe late march - no sure) When we changed site, we did do 301's for all the old pages to the new ones Any ideas or advice as to why my traffic and revenue has dropped off so sharply? Never submitted questions before - not sure if I am supposed to put urls here so if you just google Home Spelling Words - that's my website. Thanks everyone!!!

Ignore these external links reported in GWT?
Taking a long, Ace-Ventura-like breath here. This question is loaded. Here we go: No manual actions reported against my client's site in GWT HOWEVER, a link: operator search for external links to my client's website shows NO links in results. That seems like a very bad omen to me. OSE shows 13 linking domains, but not the one that's listed in the next bullet point. Issue: In Google Webmaster Tools, I noticed 1,000+ external links to my client's website all coming from riddim-donmagazine.com (there are a small handful of other domains listed, but this one stuck out for the large quantity of links coming from this domain) Those external links all point to two URLs on my client's website. I have no knowledge of any campaigns run by client that would use this other domain (or any schemes for that matter) It appears that this website riddim-donmagazine.com has been suspended by hostgator All of the links were first discovered last year (dates vary but basically August through December 2013) There have not been any newly discovered links from this website reported by GWT since those 2013 dates All of the external links are /? based. Example: http://riddim-donmagazine.com/?author=1&paged=31 If I run that link in preceding bullet point through http://www.webconfs.com/http-header-check.php, or any others from riddim-donmagazine.com those external links return 302 status. My best guess is at one time the client was running an advertising program and this website may have been on that network. One of the external links points to an ad page on the client's website.

(web.archive.org confirms this is a WordPress site and that it's coverage of Bronx news could trigger an ad for my client or make it related to my client's website when it comes to demographics.) Believe me, this externally linked domain is only a small problem in comparison with the rest of my client's issues (mainly they've changed domains, then they changed website vendors, etc., etc.), but I did want to ask about that one externally linked domain. 404 or 503 Malware Content ?
Hi Folks When it comes to malware , if I have a site that uses iframe to show content off 3rd party sites which at times gets infected. Would you recommend 404 or 503 ing those pages with the iframe till the issue is resolved ? ( I am inclined to use 503 .. ) Then take the 404/503 off and ask for a reindex ( from GWT malware section ) OR Ask for a reindex as soon as the 404/503 goes up. ( I do understand we are asking to index as non existing page , but the malware warning gets removed ) PS : it makes sense for this business to showcase content using iframe on these special pages . I do understand these are not the best way to go about SEO.

Is there a way of changing the Permalink without getting the 404 Error?
Hi, I am new to this all.. Is there a way of changing the permalink for example from: domain/content/ to domain/profile/ without receiving the 404 error message. It's just that since my website has been developed, some pages and their content have changed but the permalink still shows the name of the old page which may be confusing. Ps. Can duplicate [*] reports be suppressed?
That's the best question could come up with! Have searched but can't find any info. New user: First crawl error report show listings of pages with same titles/descriptions. In reality they are all the same page but with different parameters eg Email_Me_When_Back_In_Stock.asp?productId=xxxxxxxxx etc These have been excluded in both robots.txt (for some time ie disallow: /*?)and google webmaster tools (just done). Will they still show in updated report and if so is there a way to suppress them if the issues have been rectified as can be done in webmaster tools. Is there a way to test to see if they are being excluded by robots.txt and GWT?

Seek help correcting large number of 404 errors generated, 95% traffic halt
Hi, The following GWT screen tells a bit of the story: site: http://bit.ly/mrgdD0 http://www.diigo.com/item/image/1dbpl/wrbp On about Feb 8 I decided to fix a large number of 'duplicate title' warnings being reported in GWT "HTML Suggestions" -- these were for URLs which differed only in parameter case, and which had Canonical tags, but were still reported as dups in GWT. My traffic had been steady at about 1000 clicks/day. At midnight on 2/10, google traffic completely halted, down to 11 clicks/day. I submitted a recon request and was told 'no manual penalty' Also, the 'sitemap' indexes in GWT showed 'pending' for 24x7 starting then. By about the 18th, the 'duplicate titles' count dropped to about 600 or so... the next day traffic hopped right back to about 800 clicks/day - for a week - then stopped again, down to 10/day, a week later, on the 26th. I then noticed that GWT was reporting 20K page-not found errors - this has now grown to 35K such errors! I realized that bogus internal links were being generated as I failed to disable the PHP warning messages.... so I disabled PHP warnings and fixed what I thought was the source of the errors. However, the not-found count continues to climb -- and I don't know where these bad internal links are coming from, because the GWT report lists these link sources as 'unavailable'. I'v been through a similar problem last year and it took months (4) for google to digest all the bogus pages ad recover. If I have to wait that long again I will lose much $$. Assuming that the large number of 404 internal errors is the reason for the sudden shutoff... How can I a) verify the source of these internal links, given that google says the source pages are 'unavailable'.. Most critically, how can I do a 'RESET" and have google re-spider my site -- or block the signature of these URLs in order to get rid of these errors ASAP?? thanks

Move established site from .co.uk to .org - good or bad idea?
I am currently considering moving our site from the current .co.uk domain to the .org version which we also own. The site is established and indexed for 7 years, ranks well and has circa 10k traffic per month which is mainly UK & US traffic. The reason for the change to the .org domain is to make the site more global facing and give us the opportunity to develop the site into multi language within directories (.org/es/ etc.) and then target those to the local search engines. For the kind of site it is (community based) it wouldn’t really work to split this into lots of separate country targeted domains. So the choice is to either stick with the .co.uk and add the other foreign language specific content in directories within the .co.uk or move to the .org and do the same (there is also a potential third option of purchasing the .com which is currently unused but that could be pricey!) We are also planning a big overhaul of the site with redesign, lots of added content and reorganisation of the site – but are thinking that it would be better to move the domain on a 1:1 basis first with the current design, content and URL structure in place and then do the other changes 2 or 3 months down the line. I have read up on SEOmoz, google guidelines etc on moving a site to a new domain and understand the theoretical approach of moving the site and the steps to take (1to1 301 redirects, sitemaps on old and new etc) and I will retain ownership of the .co.uk so the redirects can remain in place indefinitely. However having worked so hard to get the site to where it is in the search engines and traffic levels I am very worried about whether the domain change is a good move. I am more than happy to accept a temporary fluctuation in rankings & traffic for 1 – 4 weeks as reported may happen as long as I can be sure it will return after a temporary period and be as strong (or almost as strong) as the previous rankings / traffic. Looking for peoples experiences to give me the confidence / reassurance to go ahead with this or any info on why I shouldn’t Thanks in advance for your advice. Adrian.
