Switching subdomains
-
A few years ago our company decided to merge all its websites (magazine brands) as sub-domains under one new root domain. So the current situation is like this:
brand1.rootdomain.com
brand2.rootdomain.com
brand3.rootdomain.com
...For the moment the rootdomain has a domain authority of 66.
In a few weeks we would like to switch that rootdomain to the strongest (highest trust, pagerank,...) brand.
So we get this:
www.brand1.com
brand2.brand1.com
brand3.brand1.comBefore we make the switch i'll have to make a pro and con list.
So I hope I can get some advice for you guys if this is a good idea or not.

Since your 301 redirect are years apart it shouldn't cause that much of a problem. I wouldn't make a habit out of it though!

Ecommerce website - Transition from one subdomain to another. Please help!
Hi MOZers, I have an ecommerce website with its mobile version of the site sitting in a subdomain. It is going to be transferred to another subdomain on the same website. How do I ensure that I save/carry over most of the traffic, authority and equity to the new sudomain? At the moment, we are not looking to get rid of the subdomain but maybe later, yes. Malika

Subdomain hosted on a different server VS Subfolder on main server
We have a website developed in ColdFusion on a server does not support PHP. We have a blog for the site using WordPress (PHP), hosted on a different server, with a subdomain as the URL. (example: blog.website.com) I've heard that search engines treat subdomains as completely different websites from the main domain, so they could actually be in competition for rankings in the search engines - is that correct? I am under the impression that the traffic to the blog will not show as traffic to the main website, because it is hosted on a different server - is that right? If I am correct, I assume the best solution would be to install PHP on our main server, and put the blog in a subfolder ... or would the subdomain be OK as long as the blog is hosted on the main server? Thanks!

Affects of multiple subdomains on homebrew CDN for images
We're creating our own CDN such that instead of serving images from http://mydomain.com/images/shoe.jpg It will appear at all of the following subdomains: http://cdn1.mydomain.com/images/shoe.jpg http://cdn2.mydomain.com/images/shoe.jpg http://cdn3.mydomain.com/images/shoe.jpg http://cdn4.mydomain.com/images/shoe.jpg Image tags on our pages will randomly choose any subdomain for the src. The thought was this will make page loading faster by paralellizing requests across many cookie-less domains. How does this affect : -Ranking of images on Google image search. -Ranking of pages they appear on -Domain authority (images are linked to heavily in our social media efforts, so we will 301 redirect image urls to cdn1.mydomain.com) Should we disallow all but one CDN domain in robots.txt? Will robots.txt on an image only subdomain even be retrieved? Should we just use 1 CDN subdomain instead?

Multiple Subdomains, my worst seo mistake. now what should i do?
Hello Everyone, I have been running www.designzzz.com from lats 3 years now. and was doing extremely good with a PR 6 and 800K+ traffic monthly, but 6 months ago it started falling and falling badly.. now i am down to 350K total impressions :{ per month. I have been blaming penguin for this and been talking to google reps continously over it. they assured me that my site is not under any type of manual spam etc. Then i begin think and i realized taht was exactly the time when i launched a few subdomains as sub parts of my site like coding.designzzz.com , wordpress.designzzz.com , photograph.designzzz.com , shop.designzzz.com in the making... now is the part that i can't undo these subdomains.. what should i do ? my search traffic is almost killed. I seriously need insight on this guys : thanks in advance! Ayaz

Subdomains & CDNs
I've set up a CDN to speed up my domain. I've set up a CNAME to map the subdomain cdn.example.com to the URL where the CDN hosts my static content (images, CSS and JS files, and PDFs). www.example.com and cdn.example.com are now two different IP addresses. Internal links to my PDF files (white papers and articles) used to be www.example.com/downloads but now they are cdn.example.com/downloads The same PDF files can be accessed at both the www and the cdn. subdomain. Thus, external links to the www version will continue to work. Question 1: Should I set up 301 redirects in .htaccess such as: Redirect permanent /downloads/filename.pdf http://cdn.example.com/downloads/filename.pdf Question 2: Do I need to do anything else in my .htaccess file (or anywhere else) to ensure that any SEO benefit provided by the PDF files remains associated with my domain? Question 3: Am I better off keeping my PDF files on the www side and off of the CDN? Thanks, Akira

Adding Wordpress On Separate Server w/ subdomain = SEO Issues?
I have a client that wants to setup wordpress for their business site. However, they are really concerned about the load time a wordpress install creates on their site in the root. So, they want to setup wordpress with a sub-domain on a separate server. For example: abc.domain.com As far as SEO is concerned with the main site, what are the advantages and disadvantages for using a separate server w/ subdomain?

How to proceed with domain switch AND url change
Hi, in a few weeks we'll do a major change on our website. This involves over 1.5 million pages indexed in Google driving substantial amount of our traffic. Basically we have 2 types of changes: subdomain switches to domain:
Technical SEO | | TruvoDirectories
ex. product.company.com will become www.product.com
for this we know how to manage DNS and Apache rules different url patterns, basically replacing ugly urls by pretty urls
for this we have advanced 301-mapping rules set up Here is the question - what is best way to proceed with these 2 changes in order to preserve rankings and organic traffic: Do both changes simultaneously? First do url changes, than the domain switch Can you please share your thoughts?0
