How to optimise a local business directory?
-
Hey All,
I've a new client who is a local business directory designed to promote local businesses across the UK but starting in it's home town of Brighton in the UK.
I'm a little stumped to know how I can start to optimise this site as most of the pages being created are from very different businesses and focus on different subjects.
I realise this is going to be a long haul but wondered if there are any tips you guys know of.
My client domain is: call-us-first.co.uk
Thanks
Steve

You've probably got a challenge on your hands working to promote a business directory like this.
What does the client want to acheive with this directory? Why are they running it, and what are it's business goals? How achievable/realistic are they? What's their budget? What ROI do they expect!
What's the competition like? eek
Why would real people use it? What makes this directory unique, How is this directory going to differentiate itself? How is it going to compete with the big name directories?
I'm not sure that "listings are limited to three per category" would make this the go-to place for anyone searching for a type of business...

Should party services directory switch to nofollow links? What are the implications?
Hello Mozzers, I'm looking at a niche party services directory (b2c). However, they're not using nofollow tags on backlinks from their paid entries (free entries only get phone numbers and not backlinks). If they suddenly switch all the paid-for backlinks in their directory to nofollow, might that have some kind of negative impact. Switching sounds like the best way forward, but I want to avoid any unintended consequences. Thanks in advance, Luke

Rel=alternate to help localize sites
I am wondering about the efficiency of the rel=alternate tag and how well it works at specifically localizing content. Example: I have a website on a few ccTLD's but for some reason my .com shows up on Google.co.uk before my .co.uk version of my page. Some people have mentioned using rel=alternate but in my research this only seems to be applicable for duplicate content in another language. If I am wrong here can somebody please help me better understand this application of the rel=alternate tag. All my research leads me to rel=alternate hreflang= and I am not sure that is what I want. Thanks,

800 Number vs. Local Phone
I have a client with multiple locations throughout the US. They are currently using different 800 numbers on their site for their different locations. As they try to optimize their local presence but submitting to local directories, we are trying to determine two things: Does having a local number reroute to an 800 number devalue the significance of it being a local number (I've never heard of this, but someone told them it did) Locality and consistency are important. Assuming they can't remove the 800 numbers from the site, are they better off keeping the 800 numbers on their site and using local numbers every else online OR just using the 800 numbers for all of their local listings?

Links from Directories
We are currently listed in a number of Association Buyer's Guides. We signed up for these last year in an effort to increase our external links. With recent Panda changes, do these links carry any value for us? Here are some examples: http://buyersguideforeducators.com/ http://wasteindustrymarketplace.com/ http://wefbuyersguide.com/ We're in about 40-50 of these different directories. Thanks, Ben
