Google fails to pick out the correct URL of the story
-
Hi ,
I have a page with many news storeys on it.
Google craws the page but it picks up a more general url even though I've embedded the direct URL within anchor tags around the headline .
The snippet below got linked by Google to http://www.irishnews.com/
Any idea how i can get Google to pick-up http://www.irishnews.com/news.aspx?storyId=1180708 would be very welcome

Is Google indexing all of the news pages individually. If they are all indexed, then what we can do is make it so that the individual page is more relevant than the news archive page. I'd suggest removing the h2 tag from around the news title, and replacing it with another inline element such a span. This would make the index page less relevant for your title term. Then make sure your individual news article headline is a h1 to make that the most relevant. Other than that, I'd just go through all of the on page optimisation check lists on SEOMoz and make sure everything is in order. Ultimately you can't choose what Google will show for you, but you can influence it. I'll have a look at your site when I'm on my computer to see whether I can suggest some more changes for you

New Google SERPS design - What's Changed?
Has anyone noticed any fall out from the recent redesign of SERP pages by Google? I noticed that there appears to be one less organic result "above the fold" now, so if you were possibly in third or fourth position maybe slight dip in traffic? Any noticeable shift in click through rate with the new bigger font? Also, has anyone noticed if the new design has caused any shift in best practices for on-page meta data like Title tag and description tag counts? I know the Title tag was previously driven by the pixel width of the title in Google SERPS, just curious if that has changed with this redesign.

Does Google penalise for alot of advertising on your site?
I look after the search side of a decorating website on which we carry a large amount of advertising from external brands as that is our business model. Do you know if we would get penalised for having too much advertising - would it be deemed to affect the user experience? Many thanks for your help on this.

Do Pages That Rearrange Set Off Any Red Flags for Google?
We have a broad content site that includes crowdsourced lists of items. A lot of the pages allow voting, which causes the content on the pages (sometimes the content is up to 10 pages deep) to completely rearrange, and therefore spread out and switch pages often among the (up to 10) pages of content. Now, could this be causing any kind of duplicate content or any other kind of red flags for Google? I know that the more the page changes the better, but if it's all the same content that is being moved up and down constantly, could Google think we're pulling some kind of "making it look like we have new content" scheme and ding us for these pages? If so, what would anyone recommend we do? Let's take an example of a list of companies with bad customer service. We let the internet vote them up and down all the time, the order changes depending on the votes in real time. Is that page doomed, or does Google see it and love it?
