Penalties forcing us to move to a new domain
-
My ecommerce company has been under an unnatural link penalty for some time now. Over 2 months, removing 13,000 back links and submitting two reconsideration requests we have still been denied. We think the best route to take is to start a new domain. Does anyone have advice, resources, articles or anything else that can help us with this transition?
Just a recap : we want to move our existing site to a new site and pass no negative "link juice". Thanks in advance.

Ryan,
Thank you for the great information. Was your last sentence cut off or was that the end?
We do not believe it will be possible to fix the penalty in time frame we have so we have decided to just go with a new domain.
We would like to try and maintain any customers that happen to stumble upon our old site but want to make sure we do not get penalized in any way. We were thinking of just putting up a generic single landing page stating that we have moved but are afraid to actually mention or link to the new site as we do not want the new one to be penalized. Is this something we should be afraid of or could we link to the new domain? Or should we keep our current pages in place and link to the new corresponding page?
Do you have a recommendation / procedure to shutdown the old site properly and remove from Google before the new site is launched? Is there a problem just making small changes to the site but pretty much making an exact copy of the old site?
Thanks,
Brad

Hi Brad.
Your situation is somewhat common. If you acquired a manual penalty for manipulative links, you are highly unlikely to resolve the issue on your own. In most cases, even SEOs fail to resolve the penalty. Google is quite firm on the steps required to resolve the penalty.
If you decide to pursue the penalty removal, you should understand it does not matter how many manipulative links you remove. On my first penalized site I removed 3.5 million links which represented 97% of the links to the site, and the Reconsideration Request was declined. Google only removed the penalty after I gathered a list of every link to the site using multiple sources, then evaluated every link according to Google Guidelines, then turned in a spreadsheet demonstrating all the communication between the linking site and my client's site.
What matters is how many manipulative links remain. The number should be zero, which is not reasonably possible in most cases, so you need to thoroughly document for each link the efforts taken to remove the link. You need to solidly demonstrate you have taken every reasonable action possible to remove all manipulative links. If you complete this task, Google will remove the manual penalty 100% of the time in my experience.

In that case, do not 301 redirect the old domain to the new one. You will need to make a clean break. You can still salvage some good links by asking webmasters to update their links to your new site. Some links such as Dmoz or the BBB may be under your control and you can make the change yourself.
Otherwise, the standard advice to starting a new site apply. Choose the best domain possible. You basically have three choices:
-
a branded domain (i.e. Nike, Google, Twitter)
-
a keyword domain (i.e. carinsurance.com, seotools.com, etc.)
-
a hybrid (i.e. SEOmoz.org, burgerking.com, etc)
Each option has value. You should also thoroughly evaluate your website architecture, especially your URLs. You will have a clean chance to incorporate all best practices.
If you choose to begin a new domain,

Hreflang and canonical tag for new country specific website - different base domain
I have a little different situation compared to most other questions which asks for hreflang and canonical tags for country specific version of websites. This is an SEO related question and I was hoping to get some insight on your recommendations. We have an existing Australian website - say - ausnight.com.au now we want to launch a UK version of this website - the domain is - uknight.co.uk please note, we are not only changing from .com.au to .co.uk.... but the base domain name as well changed - from ausnight to uknight as you can understand, the audience for both websites is different. Both websites has most pages same with same contents.... the questions I have is - Should we put canonical tag on the new website pages? If we don't put canon tag on new website pages, what is the impact on the SEO ranking of current website? I believe we need to put hreflang tag on both websites to tell google that we have another language version (en-au vs en-gb) of the same page. Is this correct?

New site migration (multiple sites into one + new domain)
Hi, I have read so many very helpful guides and experiences from you guys that will greatly help me but I have a few questions please. Our company has 3 sites, the main site and 2 sites for different product ranges: BrandProductName.com (main site - DA = 22 raking well for product name) Productname2.com (DA = 10 ranking very well for product name and little competition) BrandProductName3.com (DA = 10 poor ranking) We wish to bring all the sites into one with categories for the 3 different product. The main site is an e-commerece site whereas the other 2 are not (currently). On top of this as the main domain has one of the product names in it they wish to change the domain to be just Brandname.com. So the plan is to combine site 2 and 3 into site 1 and change that domain name. As you can imagine this is going to be quite a job. I am fairly happy with the steps required (having read all the guides and migrated many sites in the past) but with the added domain name change this is a little daunting. So my questions are: Should I merge the 3 sites into 1 and then changed the domain at a later point? Should I change the domain of the main site first and then merge site 2 and 3 in later? Should I just do it all together? Or based on the data i have provided do you disagree with the plan, what would you recommend? We are not in a massive rush to complete all of this so we have the time to plan and execute this when we are fully ready. Any help / advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all

Penguin hit Website - Moving to new domain
Hey! I am working on a Penguin hit Website. Still ranking for all brand keywords and blog articles are still being returned in Google SERPs, but the website is showing up for only 3 or 4 money keywords. It is clearly a penguin hit as it was ranked 1st page for all money keywords before latest update (3.0). We already did a link cleanup and disavowed all bad backlinks. Still, the recovery process could take over 2 years from previous experience, and in 2 years, the site will suffer a slow death. Solution: We own the .com version of the domain, currently being served on the .net. We bought the .com version about 6 years ago, it is clean and NOT redirected to the .net (actual site). We were thinking about moving the whole Website to the .com version to start over. However, we need to make sure Google doesn't connect the 2 sites (no pagerank flow). Of course Google will notice is the same content, but there won't be any pagerank flowing from the old site to the new one. For this, we thought about the following steps: Block Googlebot (and only googlebot) for the .net version via robots.txt. Wait until Google removes all URLs from the index. Move content to the .com version. Set a 301 redirect from .net to .com (without EVER removing the block on googlebot). Thoughts? Has anyone went over this before? Other ideas? Thanks!

Same Branding, Same Followers, New Domain After Penalty... Your Opinion Please
I know I've asked a similar question in the past but I'm still trying to figure out what to do with my website. I've got a website at thewebhostinghero.com that's been penalized by both Panda and Penguin. I cleaned up the link profile and submitted a reconsideration request but it was denied. I finally found a handful of additional bad links and I submitted a new disavow + reconsideration request a few days ago and I am still waiting. That said, after submitting the initial disavow request, the traffic has completely gone and while I expected a drop in traffic, I also expected my penalty to be lifted but it was not the case. Even though the penalty might be lifted this time, I think that making the website profitable again could be harder than creating a new website. So here's my questioning: The website's domain is thewebhostinghero.com but I also happen to own webhostinghero.com which I bought later for $5000 (yes you read that right). The domain "webhostinghero.com" is completely clean as it's only redirecting to thewebhostinghero.com. I would like to use webhostinghero.com as a completely new website and not redirect any traffic from thewebhostinghero.com as to not pass any bad link juice. Pros: Keeping the same branding image (which cost me $$$) Keeping the 17,000+ Facebook followers Keeping the same Google+ and Twitter accounts Keeping and monetizing a domain that cost me $5000 webhostinghero.com is a better domain than thewebhostinghero.com Cons: Will create confusion between the 2 websites Any danger of being flagged as duplicate or something? Do you see any other potential issues with this? What's your opinion/advice? P.S. Sorry for my english...

Old links showing on new domain
Last year we incurred a Google penalty and after months of trying the clean up the link profile with no joy we relaunched the site with a .org rather than .co.uk Now the issue is that 2 weeks after the launch GWMT is showing all the old links pointing to the new url. We didn't do a redirect of any kind, just changed the url Why is this????

Algorithmic penalty perhaps but what is it?
I've discovered that when google crawled my home page my ranking for all keywords dropped. I've submitted a reconsideration request as I was sure I wasn't breaking the rules. The response was that no manual penalty had been applied to my site. Therefore it must be an on site algorithim penalty? I thought it could be duplicate content as I have many posts that are in multiple categories so maybe that was it. Since then I've made efforts to ensure the posts in the categories are varied. I also thought it might be too many on page links so I removed categories that weren't needed as I have categories in my navigation and sidebar. So far though no improvement. I wonder if anyone here can take a look at the site and offer any suggestions as to what might be causing this algorithmic penalty? The site is http://www.top-10-dating-reviews.com (some adult content!) I'm really struggling to figure this out so any help much appreciated!

How is it possible to 301 specific pages to a new domain?
The old site is small, only 100 pages or so, and about 10 of them are particularly useful. I would like to 301 those 10 pages to 10 similar pages on the new site, and also 301 the other 90 pages to the new site... the new site's home page, I suppose. Does it make sense to do this and if so how? I think if I simply 301 the whole of the old domain to the new one, the juice will be shared among the new site's page equally which is not what I want. I know where the htaccess file is and I can 301 a page within a domain but I'm at a loss with this. Thanks for any help. EDIT: I'm hoping for something like this: old.com/page_1 >> new.com/page_A old.com/page_2 >> new.com/page_B ... and 8 more of those And then the other 90 pages: old.com/Remaining pages >> new.com/index
