Dedicated ip helpful for seo
-
I read somewhere a while back that having a dedicated ip address was helpful for seo if this true or just another rumor?
Also I read you should purchase your domain name for multiple yrs, what do you guys think?
-
Yeah but the bad thing is when a Chinese scammer buys the s, and rips a bunch of people off, and those people file rip off reports on the scammer. because those reports will still come up under your domain.
We had one buy our domain a few yrs ago with (the) in front of it, and for months we were getting phone calls for people looking for their ipad 2, and Nike shox
-
That is why we don't purchase all and every - or s or ing. The issue is making it a bit more difficult in certain verticals. That is why we go with one year. Typically we let them expire.
-
If you have the .com, you win. If there is a popular .net, you will get some spillover traffic for your .com. But if you own "HotLawyer.com", I wouldn't expect you would lose much traffic to "HotLawyer.tv". Domain brokers can be annoying with their constant offers.
-
Yes, and typically on every page if clients do not mind. They were also built up over time, and many clients don't host with me.
I believe the story would be different if we just built 100 new sites tomorrow on the same ip address, and they all had a link to the same one site.
I think Google penalizes what looks like obvious spamming. These sites are all legitimate. If there would be a gain to use dedicated IP addresses, I doubt it would be worth the cost for me.

"As to domain purchases, again that is a judgment call. When we purchase a domain like HotLawyer.com for example, we typically purchase the .net, .info, .org to go with it. "
I usually do this too but it seems someone always buys some version of my name either with an s at the end, the in front of it, a dash, the list goes on, and on.
-
"Hundreds of accounts spread around about 10 ip addresses on only three servers. Most have links to my web design site, and it seems to avoid being penalized."
We were doing that too but recently I heard it was a bad idea are you placing them in the footer?
My main domain we are using now is 6 yrs old and I renewed it for 3 more so that should be fine.

On dedicated IP address, I really think it depends on you and your site. As an agency, we have some that are dedicated by virtue of their SSL, etc. Many are hosted on the same (with all on our dedicated servers). As to whether it is helpful for SEO, I would say not in the sense that if you have versus don't it is better. I think you are thinking of whether or not you have multiple sites on same IP linking to each other (or same C block). Even with that, I don't know if the benefit of totally different C block outweighs the issues of changing for most.
As to domain purchases, again that is a judgment call. When we purchase a domain like HotLawyer.com for example, we typically purchase the .net, .info, .org to go with it. On the main domain, we will purchase typically for one to three years and the others all on one. The reason is that we don't typically keep them after a year unless the vertical is hot and potentially they are EMD's.
Just a note in case you are looking at it. The other thing we rarely do is take the "free" privacty. The reason is when it is time to change something, it is a pain dealing with the privacy and the domain registrar. So, unless we have a particular client with a privacy need or some compelling reason we don't.
Hope this helps you out a bit,

My experience is a dedicated IP is not a great boost, nor worth the money if SEO is the only reason to pay for it - if you are only working with one domain. If you have 500 domains all on the same IP, and they all have a link to your site, that will probably get a Google penalty.
I am more of a web developer than an SEO expert, and I resell hosting. Hundreds of accounts spread around about 10 ip addresses on only three servers. Most have links to my web design site, and it seems to avoid being penalized.
Yes, purchase your name for the 10 years max. Age of domain seems to help one of my clients a lot. The ideas is a search engine will have a greater 'trust' in a domain that is going to be around for a while than one that may only be here for a year.

Images on Website for SEO
Good Morning, We have a magento website with hundreds of different products that have slight size variations. The image for each of these products looks the same (the only difference between the products is some of the dimensions) .... Would you recommend using the same image for each of these products and just use a generic file name that describes the overall product or would you give each product its own image with it's specific product name as the file name? Should I use 1 image for 500 different sku's or should i rename the file the name of each individual sku and load an individual image? The end user will not know the difference since all of the images will appear identical, simply asking from an SEO perspective. Thanks

480,000 Redirects - Is this hurting my SEO? PLEASE HELP!
Hello everyone, I have over 480,000 internal rewrites in my Magento site. The reason I have so many is because I have over 1,500 products on my site and I update inventory every day via Bulk Import Extension. For the first few months I didn't realize that the URL was changing by a single digit every time I imported the .xml with new inventory counts. This of course created thousands and thousands of 404s. I figured out how to avoid the digit change and then I started redirecting the 404s via a Bulk Rewrite Extension. I managed to rewrite over over 50,000 404s but new ones still pop up every day and there is no end to them in sight. My traffic is terrible. Only about 40 organics daily. It's been like that for months. I can't get it off the ground and I think it's because of this excessive rewrite and 404 issue. My question is, does having so many internal rewrites and 404s hurt my SEO efforts? Would it be better just to start from scratch with a new site, new domain, new everything? Please help me. I'm going crazy with this. Thank you. Nico.

What price should you pay for seo services
A friend of mine has a business site and he has said to me that he has been receiving a number of emails with regards to seo services. He is seriously thinking about using a company to help him as he does not have the time to promote his site and get it in the top of the search engines. Last week he asked me what price should he be paying for a small business site and to be honest i could not give him an answer as i have never used a company who deal with seo before. A lot of the emails he has received are from India, and i would like to know what is involved, do they need access inside your site and what price is a good price to pay. Normally i would have told him to learn seo himself but due to the lack of time he has i can understand why he needs a company to help him any help would be good

Moving to Dynamic IP
Hi all, We are going to use CDN with geographically distributed IPs. However the website has strong positions in local search in UK and in regular search for geo kwds. Is it possible that with moving to from UK static IP to dynamic IPs can affect positions in Google? Thanks, Jane

Is the Sandbox Real? Need Help!
To start, I'm very new at this so I've likely made a ton of mistakes but here is the breakdown of what's happened/what's been done to my site. I own a wedding photography company which was based in Portland, we decided about six months prior that we wanted to relocate to San Diego. It was too soon to optimize our website for our new town of San Diego so I created a brand new site. It was born around June 2011. It looks just like the old site but all the content is different (different titles, re-uploaded images, text, etc was optimized for San Diego). What may be my pitfall is I imported our blog posts from the old site to the new site and we continued to keep both blogs live (writing the post in one, importing to the other). San Diego site: http://continuumweddings.com Old Site (now optimized for LA): http://continuumphotography.com From there I began link building. I signed up for the SEO Scheduler and began making the changes suggested there. It told me to sign up for Linxboss, and I did it. Other than that, my links have been build naturally and I have quite a few of them, definitely enough to compete with my top competitors. At one point I was #3 for "San Diego Wedding Photographer" and I stayed there for a couple weeks. Then I began to drop. Now I'm somewhere on page 10. I've read a lot of articles on here and I know I have a lot of things potentially hurting me. Site age, Duplicate content, etc. I'm just not sure why I dropped (still rank on 1st page in Yahoo & Bing) and what I should do about it. I tend to get overwhelmed and every post I read seems to talk about something new I may have done wrong. I'm willing to put in the time to fix this; I just need to know where my time is best spent.

Importance of SEO Friendly URLs
Hey SEOZ! How important do you all think SEO friendly URLs are to SEO. Here is an example: Non: http://www.domain.com/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=2964 Friendly: http://www.domain.com/product_name_here.html I have always heard mixed reviews but did an experiment comparing results on the same domain and actually noticed quite a difference with the friendly ones. Thanks!
