Product Duplicate Content Issue with Google Shopping
-
I have a site with approx 20,000 products.
These products are resold to hundreds of other companies and are fed from one database therefore the content is duplicated many many times.
To overcome this, we are launching the site with noindex meta tags on all product pages. (In phase 2 we will begin adding unique content for every product eek)
However, we still want them to appear in Google Shopping. Will this happen or will it have to wait until we remove the noindex tags?

Hi Chelsey,
I don't have much knowledge with Google Shopping sorry but I thought I'd just suggest when you come to the time of creating unique product descriptions, headings and title tags this can be automated. When I have websites like this I create rules and formulas and pass to the developers to implement.
Example: Title tag: [product name - or pull from
header] [product code] - [category] - [branding]
Meta description: use the first 165 characters from the product description
Body copy: Swap out the [product code], [product color etc], [category name] but use a similar description as the base. It would be great if we could write individual descriptions for product pages but if you have a site with thousands and thousands of pages this isn't a reality.header: Will need to be added by hand via a CMS but you can make these unique by adding the product code (or colour or size etc) at the end.
Also another thought, why don't you only add noindex to the product pages only on go live so at least your homepage and other content pages have some time to get indexed before the product pages are ready? Alternatively you could use a robots.txt file to block the folder directories of product pages while still allowing search engines to index those important high level pages (instead of noindex).
I think it's great you are taking the time to provide unique product descriptions!
Good luck,
Davinia

Duplicate content when working with makes and models?
Okay, so I am running a store on Shopify at the address https://www.rhinox-group.com. This store is reasonably new, so being updated constantly! The thing that is really annoying me at the moment though, is I am getting errors in the form of duplicate content. This seems to be because we work using the machine make and model, which is obviously imperative, but then we have various products for each machine make and model. Have we got any suggestions on how I can cut down on these errors, as the last thing I want is being penalised by Google for this! Thanks in advance, Josh

Do mobile and desktop sites that pull content from the same source count as duplicate content?
We are about to launch a mobile site that pulls content from the same CMS, including metadata. They both have different top-level domains, however (www.abcd.com and www.m.abcd.com). How will this affect us in terms of search engine ranking?

Duplicate Content Issues
We have some "?src=" tag in some URL's which are treated as duplicate content in the crawl diagnostics errors? For example, xyz.com?src=abc and xyz.com?src=def are considered to be duplicate content url's. My objective is to make my campaign free of these crawl errors. First of all i would like to know why these url's are considered to have duplicate content. And what's the best solution to get rid of this?

Duplicate content vs. less content
Hi, I run a site that is currently doing very well in google for the terms that we want. We are 1,2 or 3 for our 4 targeted terms, but havent been able to jump to number one in two categories that I would really like to. In looking at our site, I didn't realize we have a TON of duplicate content as seen by SEO moz and I guess google. It appears to be coming from our forum, we use drupal. RIght now we have over 4500 pages of duplicate content. Here is my question: How much is this hurting us as we are ranking high. Is it better to kill the forum (which is more community service than business) and have a very tight site SEO-wise, or leave the forum even with the duplicate content. Thanks for your help. Erik

Filter Tag Duplicate Content E-Commerce Issue
Hello, I just launched a new site for a client but am seeing some duplicate content issues in the campaign crawl. It has to do with the drill-down, filter "tags" that helps users find the product they are looking for. You can see them in the sidebar here: http://www.ssmd.com/shop/ In my crawl report this is what is showing up as duplicate content (attached image). How do I keep these widgets from generating duplicate content on the site? Also, not sure if it's important or not, but I am using Wordpress, WooCommerce and Yoast's SEO Tool. Any suggestions are appreciated! Screen%20Shot%202012-10-23%20at%202.56.00%20PM.png

Cross-domain duplicate content issue
Hey all, Just double-checking something. Here's the issue, briefly. One of my clients is a large law firm. The firm has a main site, and an additional site for an office in Atlanta. On the main site, there is a list of all attorneys and links to their profiles (that they wrote themselves). The Atlanta site has this as well, but lists only the attorneys located in that office. I would like to have the profiles for the Atlanta lawyers on both sites. Would rel=canonical work to avoid a dupe-content smackdown? The profiles should rank for Atlanta over the main site. This just means that G will drop the main site's profiles (for those attorneys) from their index, correct? No other weird side effects? I hope I worded all that clearly!
