Howdy Mozzers,
For anyone who has had experience of a manual penalty i'd appreciate your feedback.
How long did it take to recover from a Manual Penalty?
Of course every situation is different and its only been 8 days so perhaps it's to soon.
Below is the email we received, I highlighted "believed" they didn't state we had. We highlighted a bunch of back links we didn't like however most of these remain in our profile in GWT so not sure what was really the problem.
"Previously the webspam team had taken manual action on your site because we believed it violated our quality guidelines. After reviewing your reconsideration request, we have revoked this manual action. It may take some time before our indexing and ranking systems are updated to reflect the new status of your site."
Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

That was the original email - Google has detected evidence of unnatural link building.
We're still not entirely sure what caused the issue. I assume it was in our last reconsideration request but at that point we were just hoping.

Unfortunately there is no warning given at all for sites hit by Penguin. Hopefully yours is just a manual unnatural links penalty!

Thanks for the feedback. Hopefully it won't be months as we have already been suffering since May.
If there are underlying algorithmic issues related to Penguin...we would have a notice right?

I've seen some sites come back within a day or two of a manual penalty being removed. But, for others it can take a couple of weeks or even a few months. The difference is the degree of "spamminess" that you had before the penalty. If you had some really nasty blackhat stuff going on then you're more likely to have a longer penalty.
However, as others have mentioned, you could also have a Penguin issue on top of the warning in which case you won't get the full extent of your recovery until another Penguin refresh runs.

I will give you a method here that may assist you on the reindex side:
In GWMT go to Health> Fetch as Googlebot
In the url space following the initial domain, put an offending page and then click Fetch
It usually takes less than 5 seconds and you will see "success" with a green check mark followed by a button for Submit to Index. (Given the situation, I highly urge you to click it!
Note: If the entire site is affected, you will want to use URL and Linked pages on submission (you only get ten of these per month) and if not, just that url. (You get 500 Fetches a month).
This should help get you indexed more rapidly. PLEASE do not tell anyone as it is a secret!!

As you say, if the manual penalty removal doesn't allow traffic bounce back then I will be looking at any penguin related issues that I need to work on.
At the moment our big focus is on creating high quality unique content for high quality sites. Whilst focussing on all the on page/on site content in our control to make sure everything is up to scratch.
I'll keep you posted.

You just have to be patient here, I have seen sites bounce back in days and others take weeks. If the penalty is revoked, it should bounce back though so just try to hold fire.
The one caveat here is that there have been a whole bunch of updates and I am working with a few sites that seemingly have a manual penalty along with a bunch of panda and penguin issues. We have resolved some of the panda issues and made some improvements, we can still see a bunch of penguin type issues that we are waiting for a data refresh on and we are waiting for a response on the manual thing.
Point being, that you may not bounce back to where you were and it's possible you may have snowballed a few more problems along the way.
So, keep an eye on analytics, wait too see if you have a bounce back and then dig into your site to see if you have penguin or panda issues holding you back as well.

Great news!
As they said, give it a month or two and you'll start seeing your rankings improve.
They probably apply these penalties in bulk and then manually review when reconsideration requests come through. Whoever analysed your profile saw nothing majorly wrong so lifted the ban.

Penalty because of logo banner in sidebar of external website?
Dear mozzers, One of our pages is not ranking (well). I wrote another question about this here on Moz. I just discovered that there is an external website that has a banner to our page in the sidebar. The banner is on every 134+ pages of that site. It is in a banner slider and only show for a few seconds every now and then. The link is not "nofollow". It seems that our page dropped from Google slightly after this banner was added. However I am completely sure about this. The link is over here in the banner carousel/slider in the sidebar: http://www.wierszowisko.com/ My questions are: Could this banner log cause a penalty for our page? If so what can we do to undo this? Ask the webmaster to remove the link? Disavow on Google? How does this exactly work?

Homepage not ranking for branded searches after Google penalty removal
Hi all, A site I work on was hit with a manual action penalty some time ago for spammy links built by a former SEO agency. It was a partial match penalty so only affected some pages - most likely the homepage. We carried out a lot of work cleaning up links and disavowed suspicious links which we couldn't get removed. Again, most of these were to the homepage. The disavow file was uploaded to Google last Friday and our penalty was lifted this Tuesday. Since uploading the disavow file, our homepage does not show up at all for branded searches. I've carried out the obvious checks - robots.txt, making sure we're not accidentally noindexing the page or doing anything funky with canonicals etc and it's all good. Have any of you guys had a similar experience? I'm thinking Google simply needs time to catch up due to all the links we've disavowed and sitting tight is the best option but could do with some reassurance! Any past experiences or advice on what I might be missing would be great. Thanks in advance, Brendan.

What do you say in your emails to horrible sites to remove your links?
Morning guys, I've the unenviable task of having to rectify poor link building (a previous company's work, not mine) which inevitably means emailing tons and tons of horrible directories with links to the client from as far back as 5/6 years ago. I'm sure many of you are in the same boat so it begs the question: What have you said to these types of sites that is effective in getting them to remove the links? This could even be a two/three-parter: If you've had little joy in requesting removals, have you dis-avowed the links, and what (if any) effect did it have? Thanks, M.

Virus on wordpress second time PLEASE HELP

Finding and Removing bad backlinks
Ok here goes. Over the past 2 years our traffic and rankings have slowly declined, most importantly, for keywords that we ranked #1 and #2 at for years. With the new Penguin updates this year, we never saw a huge drop but a constant slow loss. My boss has tasked me with cleaning up our bad links and reshaping our link profile so that it is cleaner and more natural. I currently have access to Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools, SEOMoz, and Link Builder. 1)What is the best program or process for identifying bad backlinks? What exactly am I looking for? Too many links from one domain? Links from Low PR or low “Trust URL” sites? I have gotten conflicting information reading about all this on the net, with some saying that too many good links(high PR) can be unnatural without some lower level PR links, so I just want to make sure that I am not asking for links to be removed that we need to create or maintain our link profile. 2)What is the best program or process for viewing our link profile and what exactly am I looking for? What constitutes a healthy link profile after the new google algorithm updates? What is the best way to change it? 3)Where do I start with this task? Remove spammy links first or figure out or profile first and then go after bad links? 4)We have some backlinks that are to our old .aspx that we moved to our new platform 2 years ago, there are quite a few (1000+). Some of these pages were redirected and some the redirects were broken at some point. Is there any residual juice in these backlinks still? Should we fix the broken redirects, or does it do nothing? My boss says the redirects wont do anything now that google no longer indexes the old pages but other people have said differently. Whats the deal should we still fix the redirects even though the pages are no longer indexed? I really appreciate any advice as basically if we cant get our site and sales turned around, my job is at stake. Our site is www.k9electronics.com if you want to take a look. How to recover my site from -50 penalty
One of my sites was hit after Google confirmed its panda 3.2 update. The site ranked very well for many heavy traffic keywords in my niche. But all of a sudden, 80% of the keywords which ranked high in the previous dropped 50 in SERP. I know it is a -50 penalty , but i do not know how to recover from it. The link building campaign is almost the same as before and all of the articles are unique. BTW, i have two image ads on the sidebar and 7 affiliate links on the bottom of the page. Any input will be great appreciated !

Is OSE data reliable and removal of malicious inbound links?

Yes, I know Google will theoretically and maybe eventually "ignore" such links, but that will be on Google time 4 weeks or 4 years - who knows. Plus, with a younger site with a thinner link profile - anything like the links above can't be helping me......
